[Diagnostic endoscopic ultrasonography in the gastrointestinal tract].

Endoscopic ultrasonography is a relatively new technology that combines the use of flexible fiberoptic endoscopes with high-resolution ultrasound technology. It proved to be highly accurate and useful in the staging of gastrointestinal malignancies, as well as in characterizing the nature of subepithelial lesions and disorders of the pancreaticobiliary system. In this overview the variety of current evidence based diagnostic options of endoscopic ultrasonography are discussed.

Nonsurgical management of recurrent colorectal cancer.

Most patients with colorectal carcinoma undergo attempts at curative surgery. However, some present with metastatic disease and many others ultimately relapse. Most recurrences of colorectal cancer are not resectable and require nonsurgical approaches such as chemotherapy and radiation therapy directed against local recurrences, hepatic metastases, and widely disseminated disease. Nonsurgical therapy for locoregional recurrence of rectal cancer can offer significant palliation. Intraarterial chemotherapy for liver metastases increases the likelihood of response compared to systemic treatments,

Incidence, Risk Factors, and Management of Radiotherapy-Related Skin Toxicity in Rectoanal Cancer Patients: a Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Radiotherapy is essential for rectoanal cancer, but pelvic anatomy and high radiation doses increase radiodermatitis risk, potentially compromising treatment efficacy. No specific meta-analysis exists for this group. METHODS: We systematically searched PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science up to September 2025. Pooled meta-analysis, network meta-analysis, and dose-effect meta-analysis were performed on 50 included studies (n = 4,892). RESULTS: The overall radiodermatitis incidence was 58.7% (95% CI: 55.2%-62.1%), including severe (Grade ≥ 3, 12.3%) and moist desqua

The role of particle therapy in the treatment of locally recurrent rectal cancer: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Colorectal cancer is a common malignancy. Advancements in multimodality treatment have improved outcomes. About 2-10% of patients will have a local recurrence even after optimal treatment. Salvage surgical treatment is the treatment of choice, however, in posterior and lateral recurrences, surgery is linked to a high rate of treatment-related morbidity. Some recurrences remain unresectable even after neoadjuvant treatment. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A systematic literature review was performed to search for studies on curative-intent radiation therapy (RT) with photons, stereotactic b

Metastatic Colorectal Cancer Outcomes by Age Among ARCAD First- and Second-Line Clinical Trials.

BACKGROUND: We evaluated the time to progression (TTP) and survival outcomes of second-line therapy for metastatic colorectal cancer among adults aged 70 years and older compared with younger adults following progression on first-line clinical trials. METHODS: Associations between clinical and disease characteristics, time to initial progression, and rate of receipt of second-line therapy were evaluated. TTP and overall survival (OS) were compared between older and younger adults in first- and second-line trials by Cox regression, adjusting for age, sex, Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group Per

[Perioperative augmented reality technology in surgical treatment of locally advanced recurrent rectal cancer].

Rectal cancer occupies the leading position among cancers, and incidence of locally advanced recurrences is still high despite comprehensive treatment. Combined resections are usually associated with high perioperative risks. These procedures are technically complex interventions requiring further improvement. Virtual reality technology in surgical treatment of locally advanced rectal cancer recurrence has not been widely discussed. The authors present multidisciplinary construction of the matched topographic-anatomical virtual model and virtual planning of the combined surgical intervention.

Diagnostic pitfalls: a case of prostate cancer and rectal cancer accompanied by prostate cancer invasion of the rectum.

INTRODUCTION: Case of double primary cancer of the prostate and rectum is rare, prostate cancer involving the postoperative intestinal anastomotic mucosal tissue is even rarer. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of rectal cancer discovered 1 year after a diagnosis of prostate cancer and a tumour in the postoperative anastomotic intestinal mucosal tissue involving prostatic adenocarcinoma at 1 year after the diagnosis of rectal cancer. Due to the poor differentiation of both prostate and rectal cancers, there are some pitfalls in the diagnosis of intestinal mucosal lesions at an anastomosis.

Structured and shared MRI staging lexicon and report of rectal cancer: A consensus proposal by the French Radiology Group (GRERCAR) and Surgical Group (GRECCAR) for rectal cancer.

PURPOSE: To develop French guidelines by experts to standardize data acquisition, image interpretation, and reporting in rectal cancer staging with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Evidence-based data and opinions of experts of GRERCAR (Groupe de REcherche en Radiologie sur le CAncer du Rectum [i.e., Rectal Cancer Imaging Research Group]) and GRECCAR (Groupe de REcherche en Chirurgie sur le CAncer du Rectum [i.e., Rectal Cancer Surgery Research Group]) were combined using the RAND-UCLA Appropriateness Method to attain consensus guidelines. Breast cancer metastatic to the rectum: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Patients with breast cancer may present with systemic recurrence in any organ, primarily the bones, lungs, lymph nodes, liver, pleura, and adrenal glands. We report a case of rectal tumor, metastatic from breast cancer, which represents an unusual location of metastasis. CASE PRESENTATION: A 74-year-old woman, operated for lobular breast cancer 5 years ago, but not compliant with the annual follow-up, presented with severe constipation and pseudodiarrhea. Digital examination and anoscopy revealed a mass at the lower rectum, 2 cm distant from the anal verge. CT and MRI scan of th

Is rectal cancer prone to metastasize to lymph nodes than colon cancer?

The biology of colorectal cancer differs according to its location within the large intestine. A report published in a previous issue of World Journal of Gastroenterology (November 2010) evaluated the importance of tumor location as a risk factor for lymph node metastasis in colorectal cancer, and showed that rectal cancer is prone to metastasize to lymph nodes as compared with colon cancer. However, in order to conclude that the tumor location is independently associated with the occurrence of lymph node metastasis, it is necessary to consider a selection bias or other patient- and tumor-rela

[Role of different ligation of the inferior mesenteric artery in sigmoid colon or rectal cancer surgery: a meta-analysis].

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of different ligation of the inferior mesenteric artery in sigmoid colon or rectal cancer surgery on 5-year overall survival rate and operative mortality. METHODS: The results of several literatures from different countries on high or low ligation of the inferior mesenteric artery and prognosis were analyzed using meta-analysis. RESULTS: Seven studies were included. The 5-year overall survival rate was compared between low and high ligation. The odd ratio (OR) for 5-year survival was 0.87 (95% CI=0.76-0.98, P=0.02), and the OR for perioperative mortality was
