Reproductive mortality.

The transfer from traditional to modern methods of contraception in recent decades has been accompanied by a transfer of deaths from complications of pregnancy to deaths from complications of the modern contraceptive methods. In 1975, for example, it is estimated that there were more deaths at ages 25-44 years in England and Wales from adverse effects of oral contraceptive use than from all complications of pregnancy, delivery, and the puerperium combined. Thus maternal mortality is no longer an adequate indicator of the deaths associated with reproduction in the community. An alternative meas…

Rethinking the application of nanoparticles in women's reproductive health and assisted reproduction.

Nanoparticles and nanotechnology may present opportunities to revolutionize the prevention, treatment and diagnosis of a range of reproductive health conditions in women. These technologies are also used to improve outcomes of assisted reproductive technology. We highlight a range of these potential clinical uses of nanoparticles for polycystic ovary syndrome, endometriosis, uterine fibroids and sexually transmitted infections, considering in vitro and in vivo studies along with clinical trials. In addition, we discuss applications of nanoparticles in assisted reproductive technology, includin

The impact of obesity on reproductive health and metabolism in reproductive-age females.

Obesity is a highly prevalent chronic disease that impacts >40% of reproductive-aged females. The pathophysiology of obesity is complex and can be understood simply as a chronic energy imbalance whereby caloric intake exceeds caloric expenditure with an energy surplus stored in adipose tissue. Obesity may be categorized into degrees of severity as well as different phenotypes on the basis of metabolic health and underlying pathophysiology. Obesity and excess adiposity have a significant impact on fertility and reproductive health, with direct effects on the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis,

Roles of Vitamin D in Reproductive Systems and Assisted Reproductive Technology.

Vitamin D, an essential steroid hormone in the human body, plays an important role in not only the regulation of calcium and phosphorus metabolism, but also in various physiological processes, such as cell differentiation and apoptosis, inflammation, and insulin resistance. Vitamin D receptors are widely distributed in male and female reproductive systems, suggesting that vitamin D is essential for fertility. Because vitamin D deficiency is highly prevalent around the world, this review aims to discuss the potential functions of vitamin D in male and female reproductive systems and the associa

Reproductive Justice Disrupted: Mass Incarceration as a Driver of Reproductive Oppression.

We describe how mass incarceration directly undermines the core values of reproductive justice and how this affects incarcerated and nonincarcerated women.Mass incarceration, by its very nature, compromises and undermines bodily autonomy and the capacity for incarcerated people to make decisions about their reproductive well-being and bodies; this is done through institutionalized racism and is disproportionately done to the bodies of women of color. This violates the most basic tenets of reproductive justice-the right to have a child, not to have a child, and to parent the children you have w

Reproductive success of assisted reproductive technology in couples with chromosomal abnormalities.

PURPOSE: Infertility is estimated to affect 15% of couples, having chromosome abnormalities an important role in its etiology. The main objective of this work was to access the reproductive success of ART in infertile couples with chromosomal abnormalities comparing to a control group with normal karyotype. METHODS: A 7-year retrospective karyotype analysis of infertile couples was done. Data regarding type of infertility, couples' ages, ART performed, and their reproductive success were obtained. Adjusted odds ratio (OR) were used to estimate magnitude of association between the reproductive

Interactions of spermatozoa with the female reproductive tract: inspiration for assisted reproduction.

Artificial insemination with sexed semen, in vitro fertilisation and intracytoplasmic sperm injection have been used to reproduce animals, but often not as successfully as natural mating. Learning more about how spermatozoa normally interact with the female tract can provide inspiration for developing improvements in assisted reproduction. The present review focuses on Bos taurus, because more is known about this species than others. At coitus, bull spermatozoa are deposited into the anterior vagina, where they rapidly enter the cervix. Cervical mucus quickly filters out seminal plasma from sp…

A reproductive screening test of feverfew: is a full reproductive study warranted?

Feverfew is currently used in the treatment of migraine and arthritis. It is traditionally contraindicated in pregnancy but there are no studies confirming this warning. An in vivo and in vitro preliminary screen was performed using a rat model: five female rats were orally dosed with 839 mg/kg feverfew daily on either gestation days (GD) 1-8 or 8-15. On GD20, rats were sacrificed and fetuses, placentae and ovaries were collected. The fetuses were weighed and examined for malformations. While maternal weight gain appeared to be reduced, ANCOVA analysis suggested that the difference was due to

Implications of recent advances in reproductive physiology for reproductive management of goats.

The control of reproduction in goats is interesting for technical reasons (synchronization of kiddings, adjustment to forage availability or to economy), and for genetic reasons (identification and dissemination of improved genotypes). The use of short-light rhythms leads to markedly increased production of semen per buck and prevents occurrence of a 'resting' season. Recent identification of a bulbourethral lipase in goat spermatozoa opens new perspectives in sperm preservation. Light plus 'short day' treatments also allow induction of out-of-season oestrous cycles and ovulations leading to e…

The reproductive geography of miscarriages. Social identities, places, and reproductive inequalities.

Increasing epidemiological evidence demonstrates the correlation between toxic contamination and miscarriages, and the disproportionate expo … cales across which reproductive inequalities unfold. These scales span from everyday experiences of reproduction to state-level models of reproductive governance. Drawing on 13 months of fieldwork in coca-farming territories in the Bajo Cauca region (Colombia), the aim of this paper is to conceptualise the reproductive geographies of miscarriages related to to …

Roles of the Microbiota of the Female Reproductive Tract in Gynecological and Reproductive Health.

The microbiome of the female reproductive tract defies the convention that high biodiversity is a hallmark of an optimal ecosystem. Although not universally true, a homogeneous vaginal microbiome composed of species of Lactobacillus is generally associated with health, whereas vaginal microbiomes consisting of other taxa are generally associated with dysbiosis and a higher risk of disease. The past decade has seen a rapid advancement in our understanding of these unique biosystems. Of particular interest, substantial effort has been devoted to deciphering how members of the microbiome of the f

Reproductive Regulation of PrRPs in Teleost: The Link Between Feeding and Reproduction.

Prolactin-releasing peptide (PrRP), a sort of vital hypothalamic neuropeptide, has been found to exert an enormous function on the food inta … he hypothalamus-pituitary-gonad axis and intestine, suggesting a latent function on food intake and reproduction. Using grass carp as a model, we found that food intake could significantly induce hypothalamus PrRP mRNA expression, which suggested that PrRP should be also an anorexigenic peptide in teleost. Interestingly, intraperitoneal (IP) injection of PrRPs …

HRD: an integrated multi-omics resource for human reproduction and development.

Human reproduction and development span a continuum shaped by genetic, molecular, and environmental factors. However, relevant data remain dispersed across public repositories and the literature, limiting systematic integration, analysis, and reuse. We developed the Human Reproduction and Development Database (HRD; http://www.inbirg.com/hrd/), an integrated multi-omics resource that organizes publicly available data relevant to multiple reproductive, pregnancy, and developmental contexts. HRD version 1.0 contains 814 omics records, including 432 bulk transcriptomic, 144 single-cell or single-n…

Reproduction on the Rocks: Life History of a Freshwater Macrobioeroding Bivalve.

Macrobioerosion, the excavation and removal of consolidated mineral substrates by macrofauna, is well established in marine systems, where macrobioeroders drive carbonate cycling, sediment production and habitat formation. In freshwater ecosystems, however, it has been documented in only a small number of invertebrate taxa and remains a poorly resolved ecological process. Among these, the teredinid shipworm Lithoredo abatanica represents a remarkable departure from the wood-boring ecology of its family, having evolved to excavate and ingest limestone in fresh water. Despite this remarkable eco
