Osteoarthritis year 2011 in review: imaging in OA--a radiologists' perspective.

With major technological advances and application of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to large longitudinal osteoarthritis (OA) studies the role of imaging has become increasingly important for OA research over the last years. Currently, radiography, MRI and ultrasound are the most established imaging tools applied in a research setting. MRI assessment of OA features can be morphologic, compositional and can be applied in non-loaded and loaded conditions. Morphologic assessment includes semiquantitative and quantitative analyses. Novel semiquantitative scoring methods for knee, hip and hand OA

Deconstructing post-exertional malaise in myalgic encephalomyelitis/ chronic fatigue syndrome: A patient-centered, cross-sectional survey.

BACKGROUND: Post-exertional malaise (PEM) is considered to be the hallmark characteristic of myalgic encephalomyelitis/ chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS). Yet, patients have rarely been asked in formal studies to describe their experience of PEM. OBJECTIVES: To describe symptoms associated with and the time course of PEM. METHODS: One hundred and fifty subjects, diagnosed via the 1994 Fukuda CFS criteria, completed a survey concerning 11 symptoms they could experience after exposure to two different types of triggers. We also inquired about onset and duration of PEM and included space for su

Evaluating brain injury outcomes in female subjects: A computational approach to accident reconstruction of fatal and non-fatal cases.

Traumatic brain injury remains a significant concern in public health, affecting millions of individuals globally and leading to long-term cognitive and physical impairments. Historically, research in this field has primarily focused on male subjects, often neglecting to consider the substantial biomechanical and anatomical differences between genders and individuals of varying ages. The present study investigates sex-specific biomechanical responses to head impacts in real-world accidents, employing an advanced female finite element head model, with a particular focus on critical brain struct

Microstructural white matter abnormalities and cognitive functioning in type 2 diabetes: a diffusion tensor imaging study.

OBJECTIVE: To examine whether type 2 diabetes is associated with microstructural abnormalities in specific cerebral white matter tracts and to relate these microstructural abnormalities to cognitive functioning. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Thirty-five nondemented older individuals with type 2 diabetes (mean age 71 ± 5 years) and 35 age-, sex-, and education-matched control subjects underwent a 3 Tesla diffusion-weighted MRI scan and a detailed cognitive assessment. Tractography was performed to reconstruct several white matter tracts. Diffusion tensor imaging measures, including fractional a

Hearing-related adaptive strategies : Development and initial validation of the AStra scale.

BACKGROUND: Hearing loss (HL) is a chronic disease with high prevalence in older adults and with negative impact on quality of life. The primary intervention is hearing aids (HAs); however, HA acceptance and usage stay low and the psychological mechanisms of HL adaptation remain poorly understood. To address this knowledge gap, we developed a psychometric instrument to assess hearing-related adaptive strategies (AStra). MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study was administered via self-report in three different samples (online, paper-pencil, app-based). In total, 169 individuals with subjective HL (me

The Impact of Service Dogs on Military Veterans and (Ex) First Aid Responders With Post-traumatic Stress Disorder.

Due to its novelty and lack of empirical study it remains unclear if a service dog truly mitigates the burden of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms. To cross sectionally investigate the effect of service dogs on veterans and first aid responders with PTSD, we studied subjective and physiological parameters in 65 individuals divided over four groups. These groups were: veterans and first aid responders with PTSD and a service dog (n = 20), with PTSD and a companion dog (n = 10), with PTSD without a dog (n = 12) and a group without PTSD (n = 23). We found that veterans and first aid

[ELECTROPHYSIOLOGIC ANALYSIS OF MENTAL ARITHMETIC TASK BY THE "MINIMUM SPANNING TREE" METHOD].

GOALS: In the present study basic arithmetic induced rearrangements in functional connections of the brain were investigated by using graph theoretical analysis what becomes increasingly important both in theoretical neuroscience and also in clinical investigations. RESEARCH QUESTIONS: During mental arithmetic operations (working) memory plays an important role, but there are only a few studies in which an attempt was made to separate this effect from the process of arithmetic operations themselves. The goal of our study was to separate the neural networks involved in cognitive functions. ME

Forensic aspect of late subjective complaints after traumatic brain injury.

BACKGROUND: The subjective complaints in patients with TBI (Traumatic Brain Injury) may persist for years. The most frequent complaints are headache, dizziness, drowsiness, mood disturbances, and memory and concentration disturbances. It is assumed that these complaints are caused by injury itself on one hand and psychological, emotional and motivation factors on the other. AIM: Evaluation of late posttraumatic complaints in patients with TBI more than a year after the trauma, and establishing their correlations to the severity of TBI and involvement in the lawsuits for financial compensation

Respiratory function vs sleep-disordered breathing as predictors of QOL in ALS.

BACKGROUND: Most patients with ALS have evidence of respiratory muscle weakness at diagnosis, and death is usually due to respiratory failure. Sleep disruption, possibly due to apneas, hypopneas, orthopnea, or REM-related desaturation, is common. The relative impact of these factors on quality of life has not been established. METHODS: The authors recruited 23 subjects with probable or definite ALS. Quality of life was assessed using generic and specific instruments, and respiratory muscle strength by measurement of vital capacity, maximum static pressures, and sniff nasal inspiratory pressur

Increased risk of agricultural injury among African-American farm workers from Alabama and Mississippi.

Research on the epidemiology of agriculture-related injuries has largely ignored African-Americans and farm workers. This cohort study is the first to estimate injury rates and to evaluate prospectively risk factors for agriculture-related injuries and compare them among African-American and Caucasian farmers and African-American farm workers. A total of 1,246 subjects (685 Caucasian owners, 321 African-American owners, and 240 African-American workers) from Alabama and Mississippi were selected from Agricultural Statistics Services databases and other sources and were enrolled between January

Muscle force steadiness in older adults before and after total knee arthroplasty.

The ability to control submaximal muscle forces has been shown to be associated with age-related decreases in physical function, such as increased tendency to fall. This study compared quadriceps muscle force steadiness (MFS) in individuals with knee OA before and after total knee arthroplasty (TKA) to an age-matched group of controls. Lower extremity MFS was measured in 13 subjects with knee OA before and at six months after TKA (TKA-GROUP) and compared to an age-matched control group (CONTROL-GROUP). MFS was significantly more impaired in the TKA-GROUP at the pre-operative, but not post-oper

Management of opioid medications in patients with chronic pain and risk of substance misuse.

When prescribed appropriately and used as prescribed, opioid medications can safely and effectively treat pain. Best practices with respect to their use in chronic non-cancer-related pain (CNCP) are evolving. Opioids may be subject to misuse for a variety of purposes, including self-medication, use for reward, compulsive use because of addiction, and diversion for profit. Individuals with chronic pain and co-occurring substance use, mental health disorders, and other conditions may be at increased risk for misuse of prescribed opioids. Interdisciplinary pain management, the use of universal pr

Predictors of subjective age before and after cataract surgery: conscientiousness makes a difference.

This study contributes to research on subjective age by examining the interplay of felt age with health, functional limitations, and personality. Individuals undergoing cataract surgery (N=134; 38 to 92 years of age) provided data for an assessment period of 6 weeks surrounding their scheduled surgery. Conscientiousness and repeated measurements of health indicators, functional limitations, and felt age were included in the analyses. Results indicated that functional limitations may be more important to the construction of felt age than their underlying health-related causes. Moreover, conscie

Melanoma and sun exposure.

The evidence relating cutaneous melanoma in humans to sun exposure was extensively reviewed by the International Association for Research on Cancer (IARC) in 1992. Since then, 10 further epidemiological studies have been published. These are systematically reviewed, in a manner consistent with the IARC Monograph, to provide a definitive update on melanoma epidemiology. As the development of melanoma by sun or ultraviolet exposure is not amenable to experimental testing in humans, and as there is no clearly analogous animal model, the evidence for this association is dependent on epidemiologica
