Multinucleated giant cells in acquired immunodeficiency syndrome encephalopathy. Origin from endogenous microglia?

Multinucleated giant cells that are characteristic of the encephalomyelopathy of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome are stained by a lectin histochemical method. The particular lectin used, Ricinus communis agglutinin I, has been shown to bind to endogenous microglial cells in human brain, as well as to endothelial cells of blood vessels. These results suggest that multinucleated giant cells in the brain of patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome may be derived from endogenous microglia.

A Search for Tick-Associated, Bronnoya-like Virus Spillover into Sheep.

Tick-borne diseases are responsible for many vector-borne diseases within Europe. Recently, novel viruses belonging to a new viral family of the order Bunyavirales were discovered in numerous tick species. In this study, we used metatranscriptomics to detect the virome, including novel viruses, associated with Ixodes ricinus collected from Romania and France. A bunyavirus-like virus related to the Bronnoya virus was identified for the first time in these regions. It presents a high level of amino-acid conservation with Bronnoya-related viruses identified in I. ricinus ticks from Norway and Cro…

Wild boar as a potential reservoir of zoonotic tick-borne pathogens.

The wild boar (Sus scrofa) population has increased dramatically over the last decades throughout Europe and it has become a serious pest. In addition, the common habitat of wild boar and of the tick, Ixodes ricinus, indicates the potential of wild boar to play a role in epidemiology of epizootic and zoonotic tick-borne pathogens, including Anaplasma phagocytophilum. In Europe, epidemiological cycles and reservoirs of A. phagocytophilum, including its zoonotic haplotypes, are poorly understood. In this study, we focused on detection and further genetic characterization of A. phagocytophilum an…

Tick-borne pathogens in tick species infesting humans in Sibiu County, central Romania.

Romania has a highly diverse tick fauna. Consequently, a high diversity of tick-transmitted pathogens might be a potential threat to humans. However, only a limited number of tick species regularly infest humans, and pathogens present in such species are therefore of particular interest from a medical perspective. In this study, 297 ticks were collected from humans during 2013 and 2014. Ixodes ricinus was the predominant tick species, accounting for 272 specimens or 91.6% of the ticks in the study. Nevertheless, other tick species were also found to infest humans: Dermacentor marginatus consti…

Dermacentor reticulatus (Fabricius, 1794) and Babesia canis (Piana et Galli-Valerio, 1895) as the parasites of companion animals (dogs and cats) in the Wrocław area, south-western Poland.

UNLABELLED: Tests performed in 2013 and 2014 revealed the occurrence of three tick species parasitizing pet cats and dogs in the Wrocław Agglomeration. In total, 1,455 tick specimens were removed from 931 hosts (760 dogs and 171 cats) in 18 veterinary clinics. The dominant tick species was Ixodes ricinus (n=1272; 87.4%), followed by I. hexagonus (n=137; 9.4%) and Dermacentor reticulatus (n=46; 3.2%). Females were the most often collected development stage among I. ricinus and D. reticulatus, and nymphs among I. hexagonus. Additionally, D. reticulatus ticks (n=337) were then collected from vege…

Identification of a new Borrelia species among small mammals in areas of northern Spain where Lyme disease is endemic.

The role of small mammals as reservoir hosts for Borrelia burgdorferi was investigated in several areas where Lyme disease is endemic in northern Spain. A low rate of infestation by Ixodes ricinus nymphs was found in the small mammal populations studied that correlated with the near-absence of B. burgdorferi sensu lato in 184 animals tested and with the lack of transmission of B. burgdorferi sensu lato to I. ricinus larvae that fed on them. In contrast, questing ticks collected at the same time and in the same areas were found to carry a highly variable B. burgdorferi sensu lato repertoire (B.…

Zoonotic Babesia: possibly emerging pathogens to be considered for tick-infested humans in Central Europe.

The three host-tick Ixodes (I.) ricinus is regarded as an important vector of tick-borne microorganisms pathogenic for humans in central Europe and is primarily known as the main vector of Borrelia (B.) burgdorferi and the virus causing tick-borne encephalitis (TBE), the most clinically relevant tick transmitted pathogens for humans in European countries. Furthermore, it is now well established that I. ricinus also transmits Ehrlichia (E.) phagocytophila, Babesia (Ba.) divergens, and Ba. microti, all agents of zoonotic infections in dear, sheep, cattle, dogs, and horses. Tick-borne encephalitis and Lyme borreliosis: comparison of habitat risk assessments using satellite data (an experience from the Central Bohemian region of the Czech Republic).

The vegetation types have been used as the indicators of an ecosystem suitable for high incidence of Ixodes ricinus ticks and their hosts, for the circulation of tick-borne diseases pathogens and, accordingly, for the existence of natural foci of these infections, namely tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) and Lyme borreliosis (LB). The method of remote sensing offers a suitable solution to this problem. We attempted to prepare the habitat risk assessment maps on the territory (11,500 km2) of Central Bohemia (Czech Republic) using Landsat 5 TM imagery. Nine forest classes have been recognized in the…

Identification of New Microfoci and Genetic Characterization of Tick-Borne Encephalitis Virus Isolates from Eastern Germany and Western Poland.

(1) Background: Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) is the most important tick-borne viral disease in Eurasia, although effective vaccines are available. Caused by the tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV, syn. Orthoflavivirus encephalitidis), in Europe, it is transmitted by ticks like Ixodes ricinus and Dermacentor reticulatus. TBEV circulates in natural foci, making it endemic to specific regions, such as southern Germany and northeastern Poland. Our study aimed to identify new TBEV natural foci and genetically characterize strains in ticks in previously nonendemic areas in Eastern Germany and West…

[Clinical manifestations, diagnosis and treatment of Lyme borreliosis].

Lyme borreliosis is an infection caused by the Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato complex and transmitted by Ixodes ricinus ticks in Denmark. It can manifest itself in several different forms of which erythema migrans is the most common and is diagnosed by clinical assessment of the characteristic erythema. Laboratory support for the clinical diagnosis of other manifestations rests on the measurement of Borrelia-specific antibodies. Treatment is straight-forward with antibiotics such as penicillin. This paper reviews the clinical manifestations, diagnosis and treatment of this infection.

[Analysis of skin changes in outpatients bitten by a tick during a 1-year period].

Ninety-two patients with tick bites (Ixodes ricinus) visited Outpatient clinic for dermatovenerology of Military Medical Academy during a period od one year. Tick bites were generally localized on lower extremities and were seasonal in character. Most patients were 50-59 years old. Typical early skin manifestations in the form of Erythema migrans were diagnosed in 19.56%, and atypical forms of erythema in 8.69%. Late manifestations of illness were found on only two patients.

Characteristics of some tick--borne encephalitis virus strains isolated in Slovakia.

Several tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) virus strains isolated in Slovakia from 1974-1978 were characterized by their cytophatic abilities, sensitivity to heating at 50 degrees C and to 2 M urea, and pathogenicity for white mice. Strains isolated from Ixodes ricinus ticks differed in pathogenic properties from those isolated from Clethrinomys glareolus. The latter strains (Skalica) may be considered a spontaneous variant of TBA virus with decreased virulence for mice.
