[Fitness and competitive sports in venous pathology].

Since chronic venous insufficiency is a constitutional disorder, the principles of healthy living can be of major importance in its preventi … e sports which involve risks of constriction, trauma, and jolting of the vertebral column (skating, rugby, tennis, etc.), as well as all competitive sports because of the risks of thromboses, often unrecognized, and of excessive efforts which strain the valvular mechanism.

Acute versus chronic mitral regurgitation: a case of perioperative cardiogenic shock in an athlete.

Mitral regurgitation (MR) poses challenges in distinguishing acute from chronic aetiologies in compensated patients. A 48-year-old male rugby player presented with 2 weeks of worsening dyspnoea on a background of chronic bilateral lower limb cellulitis. Found in atrial fibrillation, transoesophageal echocardiography revealed flail P2 with severe MR, ejection fraction 35%, and severe left ventricular dilation-indicating chronicity despite acute symptoms. He underwent urgent mitral valve repair. Post-induction instability necessitated emergency cardiopulmonary bypass. Repair consisted of P2 tria…

High recurrence of instability in adolescents playing contact sports after arthroscopic shoulder stabilization.

Sixty-one shoulders in 57 adolescents underwent primary arthroscopic shoulder stabilization for labral tears sustained during contact sports … 1% for 4 years. Of these 11 requiring further surgery, 90% of redislocations occurred while playing rugby. Sex, type of sport, hyperlaxity and tear morphology were not significantly related to recurrence. Adolescents are at high risk for recurrence following arthroscopic stabilization. Patients should be counselled for the higher recurrence rate and con …

Left lobe hypoplasia of the human liver: a report of two cases.

Two cases of left lobe hypoplasia of the human liver were dissected minutely to show the intrahepatic vessels and ducts. In the left side of the round ligament, one case had a large cyst-like mass containing dilated vessels and ducts, while the other was accompanied by three rugby-ball-like parenchymal masses, each of which was covered by the peritoneum. The former specimen carried the usual Spiegel's lobe, while the latter was very small. Fascial and peritoneal fusion was evident at and around these two left lobes. In both cases the left hepatic vein showed the usual course and terminal end, …

Aetiology and incidence of facial fractures sustained during sports: a prospective study of 140 patients.

A prospective study was carried out involving patients presenting with facial fractures sustained during sports. One hundred and forty patients were admitted to the Pitié-Salpêtrière University Hospital of Paris between March 1998 and March 2000, accounting for 13.3% of all patients with facial bone fractures. The ratio of males to females was 7.2:1 and the mean age was 28.5 years. The majority of accidents occurred during soccer (25.0%), followed by rugby (15.0%), and as a consequence of collisions between players (50.7%). The majority of the injuries involved the mandible (34.4%), the zygoma…

Sport practice and osteoarthritis of the limbs.

Participation in sports has evolved as a cause of osteoarthritis (OA), especially in hip and knee joints. OA often occurs at a relatively early age in adult life, in certain sports (soccer, rugby, racket sports and other track and field sports) and under certain conditions (high level of practice). We review preclinical considerations and published epidemiological studies. Joint overuse even without notable trauma is likely the main mechanism of OA both in these sports and in certain occupational activities (relative risk ranges from 1.5 to more than 5 depending chiefly on the category of spor…

Bilateral Simultaneous Patellar Tendon Rupture in an Adolescent Athlete: A Case Report and Literature Review Highlighting the Role of Vitamin D Deficiency.

Simultaneous bilateral patellar tendon rupture is an exceptionally rare injury in the paediatric population. While bilateral patellar tendon rupture in adults is frequently associated with systemic disease or corticosteroid exposure, the few reported paediatric cases have been linked to localised tendinopathy, connective tissue disorders, or repetitive mechanical stress. This report presents a case of simultaneous bilateral patellar tendon rupture in a 15-year-old male following a rugby-related injury. Biochemical investigation revealed severe vitamin D deficiency with secondary hyperparathyro…

Sport-Specific Increased Risk of Anterior Cruciate Ligament Injury Following a Concussion in Collegiate Female Lacrosse.

Poor neurocognitive performance has been associated with a greater risk of musculoskeletal injury, and anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury prevention protocols include exercises to improve neuromuscular control. Research shows that a concussion elevates the risk for subsequent lower-extremity injury, because concussions lead to lower neurocognitive performance. Studies have been conducted using data within individual male sports, such as football and rugby, or across collegiate sports in aggregate; no study has focused on women's sports. Using 7 years of data collected by athletic training…

The National Football Head and Neck Injury Registry: 14-year report on cervical quadriplegia (1971-1984).

The specter of catastrophic cervical neurotrauma resulting from athletic participation, although infrequent, has been consistently associated with football, water sports, gymnastics, rugby, and ice hockey. Injury involving intracranial hemorrhage can result in death or permanent neurologic impairment, whereas certain fractures and dislocations of the cervical spine are associated with quadriplegia. Athletic injuries to both the central nervous system and spinal cord demand our attention as an active area of clinical and basic injury. A review of the available literature reveals changing injury…

Sports-related extensor carpi ulnaris pathology: a review of functional anatomy, sports injury and management.

The extensor carpi ulnaris (ECU) muscle plays a key role not only in the active movements of wrist extension and ulnar deviation but also in providing stability to the ulnar side of the wrist. Its position relative to the other structures in the wrist changes with forearm pronation and supination. As such, it must be mobile yet stable. The ECU tendon relies on specific stabilising structures to hold it in the correct positions to perform its different functions. These structures can be injured in a variety of different athletic activities such as tennis, golf and rugby league, yet their injury…

Traumatic hip dislocation in a child with an acetabular fleck sign indicating posterior osteochondral avulsion: a case report.

Pediatric traumatic hip dislocation is rare and may be accompanied by structural injuries requiring surgical treatment. We report the case of traumatic posterior hip dislocation sustained by a 9-year-old boy while playing rugby. Closed reduction was initially performed at a local hospital, but redislocation occurred 3 days later. Computed tomography demonstrated a small bony fragment adjacent to the posterior acetabular rim consistent with the acetabular fleck sign. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed an osteochondral fragment continuous with the labrum. Open reduction using the Kocher-Langenb…

Accounting for relative age effect in sports performance assessment: Developing age-adjusted performance corridors using mixed models.

This study developed a novel statistical approach to account for relative age effect (RAE) on physical performance in young populations. Data from 1715 elite youth French rugby union players (age: mean =15.9yrs, sd =1.2; height: mean =177cm, sd =9; mass: mean =79kg, sd =16) were analysed using their 50 m sprint times. Linear mixed models were employed to characterise the relationship between age and physical performance, incorporating log transformations to address non-linearity and additional parameters to refine model accuracy. Confidence intervals around predictions established performance …

Sports-Related Brain Injury and Neurodegeneration in Athletes.

Sports deserve a special place in human life to impart healthy and refreshing wellbeing. However, sports activities, especially contact sports, renders athlete vulnerable to brain injuries. Athletes participating in a contact sport like boxing, rugby, American football, wrestling, and basketball are exposed to traumatic brain injuries (TBI) or concussions. The acute and chronic nature of these heterogeneous injuries provides a spectrum of dysfunctions that alters the neuronal, musculoskeletal, and behavioral responses of an athlete. Many sports-related brain injuries go unreported, but these h…
