A 35-year-old woman with a high fever had a cystic lesion of the right lung including fluid and air. She was diagnosed with an infected bronchial cyst caused by congenital bronchial atresia with partial anomalous pulmonary venous return. She underwent a right upper lobectomy successfully. Patients with congenital bronchial atresia often have recurrent pulmonary infections with various imaging findings. The aberrant vein may relate to interruption of the bronchus in a patient with partial anomalous pulmonary venous return. Although segmental resection is recommended for this benign disease, lob

A full-term baby with double-outlet right ventricle and total anomalous pulmonary venous connection (TAPVC) complicated with left main pulmonary artery (PA) stenosis, presented with heart failure caused by increased pulmonary blood flow. Based on significant discrepancies in size and development between the left and right PAs, we performed right PA banding concomitant with TAPVC repair to promote left PA growth and restrict overall PA flow. PA-graphy performed 3 months after surgery showed marked increase in the left PA size with appropriately low pressure, which enabled us to successfully com

BACKGROUND: late mortality after repair of total anomalous pulmonary venous connection is frequently associated with pulmonary venous obstruction (PVO). We aimed to describe the morphological spectrum of total anomalous pulmonary venous connection and identify risk factors for death and postoperative PVO.
METHODS AND RESULTS: we conducted a retrospective, international, collaborative, population-based study involving all 19 pediatric cardiac centers in the United Kingdom, Ireland, and Sweden. All infants with total anomalous pulmonary venous connection born between 1998 and 2004 were identifi

We report a case of a male patient with a constellation of rare congenital anomalies consisting of: partial anomalous pulmonary venous return (PAPVR), persistent left superior vena cava, 'bovine arch' aortic branching, tracheal diverticulum, aberrant lung fissure anatomy and an annular pancreas. He had presented with a history of worsening dyspnoea. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first reported case of a single patient with such a vast constellation of anomalies. The radiological evaluations, epidemiology, embryology and clinical features of the anomalies are discussed. It is import

Between 1984 and 1996 five infants underwent surgical repair of pulmonary artery sling associated with severe congenital tracheal stenosis. All infants had symptoms of severe respiratory distress and three of them required ventilator support preoperatively ages ranged from 2 to 11 months (mean age 6 months). Complete tracheal rings were present in all patients as an associated lesion and right upper lobe tracheal bronchus in 3 patients. The length of tracheal stenosis ranged from 18 to 45 mm (median 40 mm). Three had associated intracardiac anomalies (Scimitar syndrome (1), VSD (1), double-out…

BACKGROUND: Our aim is to identify the pathognomonic anatomical markers and the best terminology to describe the cardiac malformations associated with absent or multiple spleens, which are known as asplenia or polysplenia syndromes or isomerism.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We have reviewed 65 hearts with isomerism of atrial appendages of the Anatomical Collections of Congenital Heart Disease, Institute of Pathological Anatomy of the University of Padua consisting of 1800 specimens. All the hearts were classified according to sequential segmental classification.
RESULTS: The incidence of isomerism

A 6-year-old boy had previously undergone total anomalous pulmonary venous connection repair and postoperative pulmonary vein stenosis release. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed blood stasis caused by a collision between the inflow from the pulmonary veins and the outflow from the left atrial appendage. A surgical specimen revealed evidence of advanced thrombus attachment. Infra-cardiac total anomalous pulmonary venous connection with an antler appearance may be a risk factor for thrombus formation in the left atrial appendage and for postoperative pulmonary venous stenosis due to blood flow

BACKGROUND: Studies on the outcomes of surgical repair for supracardiac total anomalous pulmonary venous connection through the superior approach are uncommon.
METHODS: From January 2004 to January 2016, 198 patients with supracardiac total anomalous pulmonary venous connection underwent side-to-side anastomosis between the common pulmonary vein and left atrium through the superior approach. Kaplan-Meier curve was used to demonstrate the survival estimates. Cox proportional hazard model and competing risk regression model were used to identify risk factors for death and postoperative pulmonar

Total anomalous pulmonary venous connection is a rare congenital heart disease. The development of pulmonary venous obstruction is one of the major risk factors for poor outcomes after surgical repair. Sutureless pericardial repair for a total anomalous pulmonary venous connection was introduced to decrease the risk of pulmonary venous obstruction after surgical repair, and favourable outcomes have been reported. Herein, we report the case of an infant with a total anomalous pulmonary venous connection who developed pulmonary venous obstruction after primary sutureless pericardial repair.

Bilateral superior vena cava (SVC) with bilateral partial anomalous pulmonary venous connection is a very rare congenital cardiac malformation. Here, we are reporting a case of 18-year-old male who had bilateral SVC with bilateral anomalous pulmonary venous connection associated with ostium secundum atrial septal defect. The patient underwent successful surgical correction for the same.

Partial anomalous pulmonary venous return is a congenital defect where one or more pulmonary veins drain into the right atrium instead of the left. Most cases are asymptomatic and are discovered incidentally. Anomalous left upper pulmonary venous return is considered the most common type. We present a case of an 84-year-old male who presented to the hospital with altered mentation and suprapubic pain. He was found to be hypotensive and tachycardic and was diagnosed with septic shock of urinary source. He was resuscitated with fluids and antibiotics were started. He continued to be hypotensive

PURPOSE: The aim of the study was to analyze the surgical outcome of patients with total anomalous pulmonary venous connection (TAPVC) who underwent cardiac surgery.
METHODS: A retrospective study was carried out. Patients with diagnosis of TAPVC undergoing cardiac surgery at the National Institute of Cardiology Ignacio Chávez, from January 1, 2003 and June 30, 2019 were included. Descriptive statistics were calculated, as well as a bivariate analysis of the variables associated with mortality. A logistic regression model was included to determine risk factors associated with the main outcome

The efficacy of primary sutureless repair for supracardiac total anomalous pulmonary venous connection (TAPVC) needs to be confirmed. This study aimed to compare the long-term outcomes between the conventional surgery and the sutureless technique with a modified approach in superior TAPVC. Between January 2008 and December 2018, 173 patients with supracardiac TAPVC underwent surgery either with the conventional procedure (n = 130) or the sutureless repair (n = 43). Multivariate analysis and competing-risk analysis were used to identify risk factors for early death and postoperative pulmonary v

We hereby describe a rare case of partial anomalous pulmonary venous connection (PAPVC) in a patient with tetralogy of Fallot (TOF). It is imperative to identify PAPVC preoperatively in patients with TOF as it can have significant hemodynamic outcomes. This case highlights the importance of computed tomography angiography in demonstrating the same.

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to evaluate the correlation between clinical parameters and the post-left atrium (LA) space index, which is a candidate screening marker for total anomalous pulmonary venous connection (TAPVC). We also calculated the inter- and intra-observer variabilities of measurements for this parameter.
METHODS: The LA-descending aorta distance/descending aorta diameter ratios (post-LA space index) were obtained from 165 fetuses between 20 and 24 weeks of gestation. Regression analyses were utilized to evaluate the correlations across clinical parameters and the post-LA space index. I
