Development and validation of a patient-reported outcome measure in vitiligo: The Self Assessment Vitiligo Extent Score (SA-VES).

BACKGROUND: The Vitiligo Extent Score (VES) has recently been introduced as a physicians' score for the clinical assessment of the extent of vitiligo, but a good patient self-assessment score is lacking. OBJECTIVE: The objective is to develop and validate a simplified version of the VES as a patient-reported outcome measure (PROM). METHODS: After extensive pilot testing, patients were asked to score their vitiligo extent twice with an interval of 2 weeks using the Self Assessment Vitiligo Extent Score (SA-VES). The scores were compared with the physicians' evaluation (VES). RESULTS: The SA-…

Clinical follow-up compared with self-assessment of outcome after medical abortion: a multicentre, non-inferiority, randomised, controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Medical abortion with mifepristone and prostaglandins is well established. We compared clinical assessment with self-assessment of abortion outcome. METHODS: This randomised, controlled, non-inferiority trial was done in four clinics in Austria, Finland, Norway, and Sweden, between Aug 16, 2011, and Jan 31, 2013. Women aged 18 years and older who had requested medical termination of a pregnancy up to 63 days of gestation were eligible. Computer-generated block randomisation (block size ten) assigned women in a 1:1 ratio to attend routine clinical follow-up or to self-assess outcom…

The perinatal self-care index: development of an evidence-based assessment tool for use with child sexual abuse survivors.

Every ninth woman presenting for prenatal care reports having experienced childhood sexual abuse. Many develop mental health disorders, including posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). In response to PTSD, pregnant women survivors of childhood sexual abuse engage in negative perinatal self-care behaviors that can lead to adverse perinatal outcomes. Currently, promotion of perinatal self-care does not consider childhood sexual abuse or PTSD. This study aimed to develop a Perinatal Self-Care Index, determine sensitivity of the index to differences in behaviors of childhood sexual abuse survivors

Assessment of factors affecting the validity of self-reported health-risk behavior among adolescents: evidence from the scientific literature.

We reviewed the existing empirical literature to assess cognitive and situational factors that may affect the validity of adolescents' self-reports of alcohol and other drug use, tobacco use, behaviors related to unintentional injuries and violence, dietary behaviors, physical activity, and sexual behavior. Specifically, we searched for peer-reviewed journal articles published in 1980 or later that examined the factors affecting self-report of the six categories of behavior listed above. We also searched for studies describing objective measures for each behavior. Self-reports of each of six t

Emotional distress or executive dysfunction? What is the Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function-Adult self-report scale actually assessing in an assessment-seeking postsecondary sample?

Using archival Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Functioning-Adult (BRIEF-A), Personality Assessment Inventory (PAI), and executive functioning (EF) test data from 826 assessment-seeking postsecondary students, this study sought to assess the impact that response bias, symptom validity, and psychological factors have on self-reported executive dysfunction and the relationship between self-reported EF and objective performance. Study 1 examined whether the BRIEF-A adequately samples negative response bias (NRB) and what the effect was of undetected NRB on obtained BRIEF-A scores. Study 2 e

Assessing the validity of self-reported weight, height, and body mass index among hispanic breast cancer survivors.

Self-reported measurements of body size are commonly used in cancer epidemiological studies; however, inaccuracies may lead to misclassification of body mass index (BMI) and biased estimates of associations with health outcomes. Despite their widespread use, the validity of these self-reported measures has not been well established among Hispanic breast cancer survivors, a growing and understudied population. This is particularly important, as prior research suggests that the accuracy of self-reported anthropometric measures may vary across racial and ethnic groups, highlighting the need for p

Assessing age at natural menopause from self-reported data in a long-running population-based cohort study.

OBJECTIVES: To assess whether age at natural menopause could be determined through self-report, and evaluate consistency and reproducibility in self-reported age at natural menopause in a long-running population-based cohort study. METHODS: We used longitudinal data from 3394 women participating in the Doetinchem Cohort Study (1987-2017), who reported menstrual status and age at menopause up to seven times over 30 years. We assessed the proportion of women for whom age at natural menopause could be determined, within-person variation across repeated reports, and reproducibility defined as agr

Assessing the Feasibility of a Self-Management Intervention for Individuals With Advanced Prostate Cancer and Comorbid Type II Diabetes Mellitus.

BACKGROUND: Many older adults with cancer have at least one comorbidity. Type II diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a common comorbidity among patients with prostate cancer (PC) and represents an important consideration in this population. Comorbid T2DM can negatively impact cancer-specific outcomes for patients, suggesting the need for better glycemic management, especially for patients on active cancer treatment. The goal of this modified Diabetes Self-Management Education Services (mDSMES) pilot study was to provide patients with the opportunity to learn methods of diabetes self-management, includ

Assessing the Link Between Physical Activity and Musculoskeletal Disorders in Taxi Drivers: A Comparison of Accelerometry and Self-Report Measures.

BACKGROUND: Taxi drivers are at an elevated risk for work-related musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs), and the reasons for this are prolonged sitting, static postures, and whole-body vibration. Physical activity (PA) may mitigate MSD risk but is often assessed subjectively. This study compared objective (wrist-worn accelerometry) and subjective (IPAQ-S) measures of PA and sedentary behaviours by examining their associations with MSD prevalence in taxi drivers from Spain and Chile. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 170 taxi drivers (mean age 51.9 ± 10.7 years; 87.1% male) completed sociodem

Challenges in assessing self-reported adherence to antiretroviral therapy among individuals living with HIV/AIDS and mental disorders.

Studies focusing on individuals living with HIV and mental disorders are crucial to inform and enhance care for this inherently vulnerable population group, especially considering that people living with HIV/AIDS (PLHIV) are more likely to develop mental disorders compared to the general population, contributing to lower adherence to antiretroviral therapy (ART). This study cross-sectional study aimed to assess self-reported adherence to antiretroviral therapy among PLHIV and moderate or severe mental disorders in Campo Grande, Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil. Patient-reported data from PLHIV who r

CHALLENGES IN IMPLEMENTING A 1 HOUR WEEKLY WALK ACTIVITY AND ASSESSING SELF-ESTEEM WITHIN RESIDENTIAL PSYCHIATRIC CARE.

BACKGROUND: Patients with psychotic disorders often have low levels of physical activity, and there's limited data on implementing exercise programs and systematically evaluating physical health among inpatients. This study, conducted in a closed psychosis unit, aimed to explore the feasibility of a 1-hour weekly walk activity, alongside assessing self-esteem. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: From February 7 to July 11, 2025, patients at the Gaudi unit in Mons, Belgium, specializing in psychotic disorder care, were offered participation in a weekly supervised walk. Out of 64 evaluated inpatients, eligib

Self-reported questionnaires assessing body perception disturbances in adults with chronic non-cancer pain: a scoping review.

INTRODUCTION: Body perception disturbances (BPD) are well documented in certain chronic pain populations [e.g., complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS)], while being far less studied in chronic pain as a general condition. The aims of this scoping review are to identify the self-reported questionnaires used to assess BPD in individuals with chronic non-cancer pain and to refine the definition of the BPD construct as used in these questionnaires. METHODS: A search strategy focusing on the concepts of "chronic pain", "body perception" and "questionnaire" was used across four databases. Each recor

Using Participatory Narrative Inquiry to Assess Experiences and Self-Experimentation with Diet Interventions in Inflammatory Bowel Disease Patients.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: To improve quality of life (QoL), patients with inflammatory bowel diseases (Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis) often self-experiment with lifestyle changes such as dietary modifications. The nature (e.g., type of interventions, expectations, perceived efficacy) of these single-subject experiments has not been systematically investigated. METHOD: We used Participatory Narrative Inquiry (PNI), a structured qualitative method, to obtain information about these experiments through patient stories. RESULTS: We demonstrate that PNI can be a method to collect and analyze

Assessing the validity of self-report of psychopathy short-form (SRP-SF) in incarcerated offenders from Chile and Uruguay.

Psychopathy remains a relatively unexplored concept in Latin America. The abbreviated Self-Report Psychopathy Scale (SRP-SF) seems promising in this under-resourced context. However, the SRP-SF should be tested for measurement invariance to achieve meaningful comparison across countries in Latin America. Therefore the aims of this study were to examine the underlying factor structure of the SRP-SF in incarcerated adult male offenders from Uruguay (n = 331) and Chile (n = 208), to examine the measurement invariance of the SRP-SF across countries, and to assess the utility of SRP-SF to classify

Alcohol Consumption Assessed by a Biomarker and Self-Reported Drinking in a Sample of Pregnant Women in the South of Europe: A Comparative Study.

(1) Background: Alcohol consumption during pregnancy is a major concern, particularly in Europe and North America. Its prevalence has so far been under-researched. In most studies, the determination of this consumption may be underestimated, as it is based on the information obtained from questionnaires rather than from biomarkers, which will provide a much more reliable approach. The main objective of this study was to compare the prevalence of consumption during pregnancy as assessed by a questionnaire and a hair biomarker. (2) Method: A cross-sectional study with a random sample of 425 preg
