OBJECTIVE: Knowledge regarding the prevalence and distribution of human papillomavirus (HPV) genotyping in healthy women is important in establishing strategies for cervical cancer screening and HPV vaccination.
METHODS: A total of 18,170 women who visited a Korean Medical Institute for health check-ups were recruited retrospectively; they underwent HPV genotyping and conventional cervical cytology. An HPV DNA test was performed using the Anyplex™ II HPV 28 detection system (Seegene) or HPV Liquid Bead Microarray (Osang Healthcare). The distribution of HPV genotypes was assessed according to

BACKGROUND: Sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) has replaced axillary lymph node dissection (ALND) for assessing axillary lymph node status in clinically node-negative breast cancer patients. However, the approach to axillary surgery after neoadjuvant treatment is still controversial. In the present study, our objective was to predict the pathological nodal stage based on SLNB results and the clinicopathological characteristics of patients who initially presented with clinical N1 positivity but whose disease status was converted to clinical N0 after neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC).

BACKGROUND: Touch imprint cytology (TIC) is a fast, cheap and specific intraoperative examination of the sentinel lymph nodes (SLNs) in early breast cancer patients. The results of TIC in patients with ultrasonically (US) uninvolved axillary lymph nodes are not known. The objective of our study was to compare the results of TIC in the patients with US uninvolved axillary lymph nodes (US group) and those with only clinically uninvolved axillary lymph nodes (non-US group).
METHODS: A total of 470 patients were included in the study, 257 in the US group and 213 in the non-US group. TIC results w…

OBJECTIVES: Investigate if choice of neck management by sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) or elective lymph node dissection (ELND) affects disease specific (DSS) or overall survival (OS) in cT1-T2 N0 oral cancer patients subsequently diagnosed with occult metastasis (pN+).
METHODS: Retrospective study of cT1-T2 N0 OSCC upstaged pathologically (pN+) by either SLNB or ELND at three major UK head and nek surgery centres between 2006 and 2021. Univariate and multivariate Cox proportional hazard regression analysed factors influencing survival. The most influential hazard ratios were selected for …

PURPOSE: Sentinel node biopsy (SNB) and inguinal lymph node dissection (ILND) are central to penile cancer management, but ILND especially carries substantial morbidity. This nationwide study explores the extent and risk factors of postoperative complications after inguinal lymph node surgery in Danish penile cancer patients.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of penile cancer patients diagnosed in Denmark 2013-2025. Surgical procedures, pathological outcomes, and complications were extracted from medical records. Univariable and multivariable logistic regression with multiple

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) using blue dye-only in patients who underwent neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NACT) and the axillary recurrence rate in these patients. Additionally, we sought to investigate the impact of this approach on disease-free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS). METHODS: Patients who underwent SLNB with blue dye only after receiving NACT for breast cancer between 2013 and 2021 were retrospectively evaluated. The study included patients with invasive breast cancer who were clinically node-negative (cN0) or node-p…

Based on the results of international multicenter randomized trials, completion lymph node dissection for patients with sentinel lymph node-positive melanoma is no longer routinely recommended. However, clinicians should take into consideration racial and medical resource differences when applying this evidence to clinical practice in Japan. To evaluate the clinical validity of the observation policy of omitting completion lymph node dissection, we retrospectively surveyed patients with sentinel lymph node-positive melanoma between 2002 and 2020 at Niigata Cancer Center Hospital. A total of 59…

AIMS: For patients with early-stage melanoma, uncertainty exists regarding optimal surgical excision margins of the primary tumour and surgical management of the clinically node-negative lymph node basin. We describe the process of creating a provincial guideline for the treatment of node-negative melanoma of the trunk and extremities. The following research questions were addressed: What are the optimal excision margins for clinically node-negative cutaneous melanoma and should these patients undergo sentinel lymph node biopsy?
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Outcomes were local and regional recurren…

BACKGROUND: Despite the reduced morbidity associated with sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB), lymphedema remains a clinically relevant complication. We hypothesized that a higher number of lymph nodes (LNs) removed during SLNB is associated with a higher risk of lymphedema.
METHODS: Six hundred patients with clinically node-negative breast cancer who underwent SLNB were prospectively studied. Circumferential bilateral upper extremity measurements were performed preoperatively and at 3-8 years after surgery. Association of lymphedema with total number of LNs excised and other clinicopathologic …

AIMS: We aimed to evaluate the prevalence of and the risk factors for axillary lymph-node metastases in pure tubular carcinoma (PTC) of the breast. The role of axillary staging and treatment in PTC was also evaluated.
METHODS: Between March 2001 and August 2004, 33 PTC patients underwent sentinel node (SN) biopsy as a part of their surgical treatment. Level I/II axillary clearance was carried out in case of tumour positive SN findings. To confirm the correct histological diagnosis (PTC, >90% tubular component), the breast tumours were reviewed by an expert breast pathologist.
RESULTS: The SN

We sought the extent to which arm morbidity could be reduced by using sentinel-lymph-node-based management in women with clinically node-negative early breast cancer. One thousand eighty-eight women were randomly allocated to sentinel-lymph-node biopsy followed by axillary clearance if the sentinel node was positive or not detected (SNBM) or routine axillary clearance (RAC, sentinel-lymph-node biopsy followed immediately by axillary clearance). Sentinel nodes were located using blue dye, alone or with technetium-labeled antimony sulfide colloid. The primary endpoint was increase in arm volume

BACKGROUND: Sentinel lymph node biopsy is the gold standard surgical technique for axillary staging in patients with clinically node-negative. However, it is still uncertain what is the optimal number of sentinel lymph nodes (SLNs) to be removed to reduce the false-negative rate. The aim of this study was to investigate whether patients with a single negative SLN have a worse prognosis than those with two or more negative SLNs.
METHODS: A retrospective review was conducted on a large series of SLN-negative breast cancer patients. Survival outcomes and regional recurrence rate were evaluated a…

BACKGROUND: Sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) is associated with reduced morbidity, although lymphedema remains a significant complication. Previously, we found no association between number of excised lymph nodes (LNs) and measured lymphedema in SLNB patients. In this analysis, we examined the relationship between number of LNs excised during SLNB and patient-perceived lymphedema.
METHODS: A total of 600 women who underwent SLNB for breast cancer were prospectively studied. Measured lymphedema was evaluated by circumferential bilateral upper-extremity measurements taken preoperatively and 3-…

In the staging of early breast cancer a positive sentinel node biopsy is followed by axillary dissection in order to assess the number of metastasised lymph nodes. Immediate axillary dissection has been abandoned in our centre. If necessary, an axillary dissection takes place about two weeks later, but the post surgical inflammatory reaction might hinder dissection and decrease the number of removed lymph nodes. In a retrospective study, the total number of lymph nodes removed by sentinel node biopsy followed later by axillary dissection (n = 53) was compared with the total number of lymph nod

BACKGROUND: Controversy exists in sentinel lymph node (SLN) mapping in breast cancer regarding the appropriate number of nodes to remove and the best technique for identification of the SLNs.
METHODS: A retrospective chart review from January of 1999 to January of 2004 was performed for all patients undergoing a SLN biopsy examination who had at least 1 positive SLN.
RESULTS: We identified 167 patients. A mean of 4.4 SLNs were removed per patient. All of the positive SLNs were identified by node 6. Radiotracer used alone identified 19 positive nodes (11.4%) and blue dye used alone identified…

BACKGROUND: In the primary treatment of apparent uterine-confined endometrial carcinoma, pelvic ± para-aortic lymphadenectomy has been considered the standard of care. Although some retrospective data suggest that the sentinel lymph node algorithm without complete lymphadenectomy can be used without jeopardizing oncologic outcome, prospective data are lacking.
PRIMARY OBJECTIVES: To assess the 36 month incidence of pelvic/non-vaginal recurrence in women with pathologically confirmed stage I intermediate-risk endometrioid endometrial carcinoma who have bilateral negative pelvic sentinel lymph …

BACKGROUND: The optimal number of sentinel lymph nodes (SLN) that need to be harvested to achieve favorable survival outcome during a SLN biopsy (SLNB) has not yet been established.
METHODS: Six hundred and thirteen patients with clinically node-negative breast cancer who underwent SLNB were reviewed. Survival outcomes according to the number of total harvested lymph nodes (THLNs), defined as the sum of enumerated SLNs and non-SLNs were analyzed.
RESULTS: Patients with only 1 THLN showed lower recurrence-free survival (RFS) as compared to those with ≥2 THLNs (p = 0.049). In multivariate anal…

BACKGROUND: Immune regulated pathways influence both breast cancer (BrC) development and response to (neo)adjuvant chemotherapy. The sentinel lymph node (SLN), as the first metastatic site, is also the first site where BrC-induced suppression of immune effector subsets occurs. Since intricate knowledge of the phenotypic and functional status of these immune effector subsets is lacking, we set out to map the immune landscape of BrC SLN.
METHODS: Viable LN cells from BrC SLN (n = 58) were used for detailed flowcytometry-assisted mapping of the immune landscape of BrC SLN in a comparative analys…
