Thirty-nine patients suffering from hallux valgus deformity were randomized into one of two treatment groups following a corrective Austin procedure. One group received physical therapy only (n = 18), and the other group received physical therapy and continuous passive motion (n = 21). Continuous passive motion was initiated immediately after surgery and patients were instructed to use continuous passive motion for 8 hr a day for 24 days. On the 7th, 14th, 21st, 28th, 60th, and 90th days, range of motion, return to conventional shoes, use of oral analgesics, and complication rate were measured…

Many choices are available to athletes seeking an ankle support. The time-honored tradition of ankle taping with adhesive tape does offer pr … as a first-line method of support for individuals with no history of recent ankle sprain. High-top shoes are better when the ankle is taped, although low-top shoes are better when a laced stabilizer is worn. Elastic guards help reduce ankle edema but do not provide ankle stability.

Gait kinematics undergo significant alterations stemming from shoe type that can enhance performance or result in musculoskeletal injuries that impact daily living. Crocs surge to mainstream consumers, along with their presence throughout other industries, begs the question of the impact of this shoe on walking performance and kinematics. This study examined the impact of Crocs with and without heel strap on walking performance and lower body kinematics. Thirty-one participants completed 3 walking trials at self-selected pace for each condition: control (CON): socked; sports mode: Crocs with h

INTRODUCTION: Optimising the cushioning stiffness of diabetic footwear/orthoses can significantly enhance their offloading capacity. This study explores whether optimum cushioning stiffness can be predicted using simple demographic and anthropometric parameters.
METHODS: Sixty-nine adults with diabetes and loss of protective sensation in their feet were recruited for this cross-sectional observational study. In-shoe plantar pressure was measured using Pedar® for a neutral diabetic shoe (baseline) and after adding cushioning footbeds of varying stiffness. The cushioning stiffness that achieved

INTRODUCTION: Delayed healing and recurrence of diabetic foot ulcerations (DFUs) is often related to excessive pressure. Offloading, a mainstay of treatment, can be achieved through a variety of methods. Although pressure mitigation should be continued after wound resolution to prevent recurrence, many offloading modalities are discontinued at that point, with providers instead relying on patient self-directed use of appropriate inserts and shoe gear. Use of a novel offloading modality continued upon wound healing may help break the cycle of recurrent DFUs.

The study's purpose was to substantiate findings on sex-related differences in foot morphology focusing on fringe sizes. Altogether, 287 Caucasian adults with long or short feet were scanned. Data were analysed together with data from 847 subjects from a previous study with comparable inclusion criteria and anthropometric data by: (1)comparing absolute measures within 237-277 mm foot length (FL); (2) comparing averaged measures across sizes in % of foot length for 203-323 mm FL; (3) reclassifying the additional subjects into a previously defined foot type classification. Male feet were wider a

AIMS: Incorrectly fitting footwear (IFF) poses a risk of trauma to at-risk feet with diabetes. The aim of this systematic review was to summarise and assess the evidence that IFF is a statistically significant cause of ulceration.
METHODS: We searched PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science and Google Scholar for English-language peer-reviewed studies reporting the number or percentage of people with diabetes-related foot ulceration (DFU) attributed to wearing IFF and included a physical examination of the footwear worn. Two independent reviewers assessed the risk of bias using the Newcastle-Ottawa sc

P-tert-butylphenol formaldehyde resin (PTBPFR) is recognized as a significant source of allergic contact dermatitis in adults and children in association with athletic gear, shoes, and neoprene. To our knowledge, this is the first case report of allergic contact dermatitis with PTBPFR associated with padded foam bras.

Epidermolysis bullosa (EB) results from genetic defects of molecules in the skin concerned with adhesion. Some of the most common problems seen with EB sufferers are blisters, vesicles, and bullas. Maintaining foot cleanliness, exercising, and wearing shoes are all good preventative measures and important in EB foot care.

Morton's neuroma is a benign foot condition that occurs more often in women than men, and particularly in those who wear narrow, high-heeled shoes. This article presents a case study of the condition, discusses its symptoms and diagnosis, and provides information about the range of treatments on offer.

This case report represents a 56-year-old patient with macrodactyly of the right foot. This congenital anomaly was not treated surgically before. We resected the gigantic phalanges and metatarsals with preservation of the three main points for walking. The patient is now able to wear fitting shoes.

Below-knee (BK) amputee children have a different morphology from normal children and amputees may thus have atypical limb loading during standing. The purpose of this investigation was to examine differences in standing ground-shoe pressure distribution between BK and normal children. A pressure plate was used to measure the ground-shoe weight distribution of three BK children and ten normal children during standing. Results indicated that the weight distribution between prosthetic and non-prosthetic limbs of BK children was not significantly different from the feet of normal children. The an

Diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) pose a major threat to the United States healthcare system as well as patients and their families. High ulcer recurrence rates indicate that existing preventive measures are not effective. A new generation of multimodal preventive devices may reduce ulceration and amputation rates. Because previous research has revealed that tissue maintained at cooler temperatures is more resistant to breaking down, the evaluated technology may prevent foot ulceration. The purpose of this study was to test previously designed Temperature and Pressure Monitoring and Regulating Insol

Athletes wore their own athletic shoes and performed walking trials on a surface similar to that used in their sport. The foot was divided into four regions based on radiographic measurements.

Physicians can perform a quick, complete examination of the feet of patients with diabetes to prevent serious complications. The examination should focus on circulation, nerve function, musculoskeletal problems, and the skin. All patients should be urged to wear supportive, comfortable shoes, and to wash, moisturize, and examine their feet every day.

Contrary to the general impression, the hollow foot is much more common than the flat foot. We distinguish three categories of hollow foot: … ck of the shoe. Common therapy consists of plantar orthoses, eventually toe orthoses and orthopedic shoes. When surgery is used in the adult, it is generally not to correct excess cavus but to correct problems of the front of the foot such as hallux valgus, involvement of the second metatarsal bone (??), or toenails.

The first case of allergy due to para-tertiary-butylphenol formaldehyde resins (PTBP resins) were found in 1958 in the shoe-making industry. These resins are found in certain neoprene adhesives. PTBP resin hypersensitivity may be due either to the para-tertiary-butylphenol, to the resin itself or less frequently to the formaldehyde. These resins may cause occupational allergy (in the automobile industry and chiefly in the shoe-making industry) and non-occupational allergy (footwear and clothing hypersensitivity). Patients allergic to PTBP resins have been found to show a cross-reaction to othe
