The spinal accessory nerve (SAN) is the major motor supply to the trapezius and sternocleidomastoid muscles. The superficial course of the SAN in the posterior cervical triangle makes it vulnerable to injuries. The most common reason is an iatrogenic injury during surgery but other causes such as stretch or traction injury have also been reported. Five iatrogenic SAN injuries were occurred after radical neck dissection (RND) for laryngeal carcinoma in two patients, lymphadenectomy for oral mucosal tumor in one patient, surgery for lipoma in one patient, and lymph node biopsy for tuberculosis i

This study aims to compare hand-rim and power-assisted hand-rim propulsion on potential risk factors for shoulder overuse injuries: intensity and repetition of shoulder loading and force generation in the extremes of shoulder motion. Eleven experienced hand-rim wheelchair users propelled an instrumented wheelchair on a treadmill while upper-extremity kinematic, kinetic and surface electromyographical data was collected during propulsion with and without power-assist. As a result during power-assisted propulsion the peak resultant force exerted at the hand-rim decreased and was performed with s

BACKGROUND: Although pre-training stretching and the inherent flexibility of an athlete are generally regarded as beneficial for injury prevention, limited evidence exists on the association between flexibility, stretching habits, and spine injuries in professional golfers. This study aimed to evaluate the association between flexibility and spinal injuries among professional golfers in South Korea.
METHODS: A nationwide cross-sectional study was conducted to assess spine injuries among professional active golfers in South Korea. Data on cervical (C)-spine and thoracolumbar/lumbar (T/L)-spine

Restoration of shoulder function is one of the most critical goals of treatment of brachial plexus injuries. Primary repair or nerve grafting of avulsion injuries of the upper brachial plexus in adults often leads to poor recovery. Nerve transfers have provided an alternative treatment with great potential for improved return of function. Many different nerves have been utilized as donor nerves for transfer to the suprascapular nerve and axillary nerve for return of shoulder function with variable results. As our knowledge of shoulder neuromuscular anatomy and physiology improves and our exper

This study aimed to establish whether post-mortem injury patterns can assist in distinguishing drivers from front seat passengers among victims of motor vehicle collisions without regard to collision type, vehicle type or if safety equipment had been used. Injuries sustained by 206 drivers and 91 front seat passengers were catalogued from post-mortem reports. Injuries were coded for the body region, depth and location of the injury. Statistical analysis was used to detect injuries capable of discriminating between driver and passenger. Drivers were more likely to sustain the following injuries

BACKGROUND: Rugby is a sport involving a great number of shoulder collisions. Traumatic stress of the shoulder can weaken the static stabilizers and promote major injuries as dislocation or full-thickness tears of the rotator cuff. The goal of this study is to evaluate the clinical and ultrasonographic dominant shoulder factures in a group of amateur rugby players, with no history of shoulder injuries, and to compare them with those of a control group.
METHODS: 52 male subjects join in the study: 26 amateur rugby players and 26 subjects, which did not practice rugby or competitive sport. Clin…

Drooping shoulder is a roentgenographic abnormality consisting in a discontinuity in the scapulo-humeral arch due to inferior subdislocation of the humeral head. Drooping shoulder is commonly seen in patients with injuries to the shoulder or neurological loss. Two cases of drooping shoulder due to staphylococcal arthritis (after local corticosteroid injections) are reported herein. The mechanism of the downward humeral displacement in septic arthritis is discussed. The other causes of drooping shoulder are reviewed. Precautions needed to avoid increasing the displacement during rehabilitation

The painful frozen shoulder has many different causes. Most common among the patients in the hospital "Bergmannsheil" is the deterioration of a cervical syndrome through an accident. Stiffness is seen occasionally after injuries to the soft tissues of the shoulder, especially after dislocations or dislocated fractures of the shoulder. A few case reports are given to illustrate the origin and the treatment of the painful frozen shoulder. An effective therapy aims at the underlying cause. Physiotherapy is helpful to hasten the remobilization of the shoulder. A support for the arm is an important

We aimed to examine the relationship between hip range of motion (ROM) and abduction strength and throwing-related shoulder/elbow injuries in high school baseball pitchers. The study included 135 baseball pitchers. We asked them to fill out a questionnaire at the checkups, that included the dominant arm and the years of baseball experience. To avoid a confirmation bias, the examiners were blinded to the participants' hand dominance. All players underwent physical function measurements, such as height, weight, shoulder and hip strength, and shoulder and hip ROM. Shoulder and elbow injury was de
