The Sibling Sexual Behaviour Mapping Tool (SSBMT): Supporting practitioner confidence, planning and competency when responding to sexual behaviours between siblings.

OBJECTIVES: This paper outlines the development and initial pilot of the Sibling Sexual Behaviour Mapping Tool (SSBMT). Building on the findings of the National Project on Sibling Sexual Abuse (King-Hill, McCartan, et al., 2023) and work by Yates and Allardyce (2023), the tool was devised with the aim of supporting frontline child-protection social workers during the initial stages of working with families where sibling sexual behaviours (SSB) may be present. METHODS: This paper explores the rationale for the SSBMT design, and preliminary findings from the first phase of resource evaluation.

Zonulin as an endophenotype for schizophrenia: A study in patients and unaffected siblings.

BACKGROUND: Zonulin, a key regulator of epithelial tight junctions, is implicated in intestinal and blood-brain barrier permeability and neuroinflammation. Although elevated zonulin is reported in schizophrenia, its expression in unaffected siblings and status as an endophenotype remain unclear. We compared serum zonulin levels among patients with schizophrenia, unaffected siblings and healthy controls, investigating association with symptom severity and cognitive function. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 43 patients with schizophrenia (SZ), 43 unaffected siblings (UAS), and 43 h…

A Rare Case of Prurigo Pigmentosa in Iranian Sibling Couple.

Prurigo Pigmentosa is a rare inflammatory skin disease of unknown origin, characterized by pruritic, erythematous papules on the chest, back, neck, and anterior abdomen. The eruption resolves with reticular hyperpigmentation that cosmetically affects the patient's quality of life. Previous reports highlighted the role of the Ketogenic diet in triggering the disease in young female patients, however, no study reported the occurrence of Prurigo Pigmentosa in siblings of one family, unrelated to a ketogenic diet. Here, we report two sisters diagnosed with Prurigo Pigmentosa without undergoing a K…

The impact of perinatal brain injury on siblings: a scoping review.

PURPOSE: (a) To analyze the extent and nature of research available on the impact of childhood perinatal brain injury (PBI) on siblings, (b) to synthetize results in a descriptive manner. METHOD: A literature search of 4 databases was performed up to October 2023. Studies addressing issues around siblings of children with PBI, cerebral palsy (CP) or Profound Intellectual and Multiple Disabilities (PIMD) were included. The protocol was drafted using Arksey and O'Malley's framework and the review followed PRISMA reporting guideline. RESULTS: 35 articles were identified and analyzed, all focuse…

Close Relationships Despite the Challenges: Sibling Relationships and Autism.

This study explores the experiences of siblings of autistic adolescents within families. Without the novel insights generated from engaging with siblings of autistic adolescents within a qualitative framework, it can be challenging to develop strategies for practicing effectively with this group or structuring interventions with these families. Using a social constructivist approach and qualitative participatory methodology, the exploratory study was conducted using in-depth interviews with ten non-autistic siblings, analyzed via a thematic analysis method. The results reveal a common feeling …

Quality of life of families and siblings of children and adolescents with meningomyelocele.

BACKGROUND: Children with meningomyelocele may require continuous care. Consequently, there is a risk for caregiver burden and impact on family quality of life (QoL), including siblings' QoL. Some studies analysed caregivers' burden and family QoL separately. However, none of these studies evaluated siblings' QoL and the associations between these three dimensions. This study investigated the associations between caregivers' burden, family QoL and siblings' QoL in Brazilian families of children with meningomyelocele and its correlations with sociodemographic, functional and clinical variables.…

No effects of siblings and twin testosterone transfer on autistic traits.

BACKGROUND: Having twin and non-twin siblings might influence autistic traits both prenatally and postnatally. The twin testosterone transfer hypothesis suggests that girls with a twin brother are exposed to higher levels of prenatal testosterone than girls with a twin sister, and that increased testosterone exposure masculinizes neural development and increases autistic traits. Postnatally, siblings may provide example behaviour, which could reduce autistic traits. METHODS: We studied pre- and postnatal influences of twin and non-twin siblings on mother and teacher-reported autistic traits i…

Sibling involvement in interventions for children with a disability: a systematic review.

PURPOSE: To conduct a systematic review of the involvement of siblings of individuals with a disability in therapeutic interventions to explore (a) sibling roles, (b) reported outcomes related to participant skills, interactions, or relationships, and (c) participant experiences. METHODS: A search of popular databases and grey literature was completed identifying studies published in English from 1999-2020. In total, 14,815 citations were extracted. Following a review of titles and abstracts, 31 studies met the inclusion criteria and were assessed for study quality. RESULTS: The most common …

Quantitative and Qualitative Perspectives of Siblings of Children With Cochlear Implants.

Purpose The sibling relationship teaches children to navigate social interactions with their peers. However, the presence of an exceptionality, such as hearing loss, in one child can affect the dynamic of this relationship. This article examines quantitative and qualitative effects of having a brother or sister with a cochlear implant (CI) on siblings with typical hearing (TH) to determine how children with TH perceive their sibling with a CI and how having a CI user in the family affects the sibling's activities, emotions, and parental attention. Method Participants include 36 siblings with T…

Psychosocial impact on siblings of patients with developmental and epileptic encephalopathies.

OBJECTIVE: Caring for children with developmental and epileptic encephalopathies (DEEs) places substantial demands on the entire family unit, including siblings. The Sibling Voices Survey assesses parental and sibling responses to questions designed to assess how children adapt to growing up with siblings with DEE. METHODS: Participants responded to 1 of 4 online, age- and role-specific surveys (9-12, 13-17, and ≥18-year-old [adult] siblings; parents responded with perceptions of their unaffected child's/children's feelings). Survey questions used visual analog scales, categorical responses, …

Characterization of a novel variant in siblings with Asparagine Synthetase Deficiency.

Asparagine Synthetase Deficiency (ASD) is a recently described inborn error of metabolism caused by bi-allelic pathogenic variants in the asparagine synthetase (ASNS) gene. ASD typically presents congenitally with microcephaly and severe, often medically refractory, epilepsy. Development is generally severely affected at birth. Tone is abnormal with axial hypotonia and progressive appendicular spasticity. Hyperekplexia has been reported. Neuroimaging typically demonstrates gyral simplification, abnormal myelination, and progressive cerebral atrophy. The present report describes two siblings fr…

The Psychosocial Impact of Cleft Lip and/or Palate on Unaffected Siblings.

BACKGROUND: Sibling relationships are among the most unique social connections, significantly affecting psychosocial adjustment. Previous reviews in the fields of chronic illness and disability have concluded that unaffected siblings of children with long-term conditions are at risk of poorer psychological functioning as a consequence. Much research has investigated the psychosocial impact of CL/P on affected individuals and their parents, yet comparatively little is known about the impact on other close family members. OBJECTIVE: To gain a better understanding of the experience of unaffected…
