Psychiatric Comorbidities in Children With ASD: Autism Centre Experience.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder with social communication deficits, restricted interests, and repetitive behaviours. In this lifelong condition the core features that cause impairment may also be expanded by behavioural and emotional problems. Individuals with ASD are likely to experience a higher prevalence of common mental disorders compared to the typically developed individuals. This high epidemiological burden of various psychiatric disorders among ASD population encourages further research and improvement in diagnostic practise in ASD and comorbid disorder

[Interpersonal psychotherapy from research to practice].

THEORETICAL BACKGROUND: Interpersonal therapy (IPT) is a brief, structured psychotherapy initially intended to treat adult depression that was developed in the 1970s and manualized in 1984 by G. Klerman and his team. Two main theories served as a basis for its design: Bowlby's attachment theory and communication theory. Klerman theorized that tensions and problems in interpersonal relationships (i.e. disputes) cause psychological distress in vulnerable individuals that may lead to a major depressive episode. Clinical and epidemiological studies have shown that an insecure attachment style is s

Case Report: Integration between eye movement desensitization and reprocessing and cognitive therapy for autism spectrum disorder. Novel intervention protocol based on case formulation and brief review of literature.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by persistent deficits in social communication and interaction, alongside restricted, repetitive, and stereotyped patterns of behavior and interests. Individuals on the autism spectrum exhibit increased psychopathological vulnerability, with a high incidence of comorbid conditions, including Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and trauma-related symptoms. Trauma-related symptoms appear to be highly prevalent in ASD, though they are frequently underestimated. Furthermore, autistic individuals face numerous risk factors tha

Lifelong Management of Neurofibromatosis 1 Patients.

Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is a prevalent genetic disorder characterized by a wide spectrum of clinical manifestations, including cutaneous, neurological, and oncological complications. The disease results from mutations in the NF1 gene, which encodes neurofibromin, a tumor suppressor that regulates the RAS/mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) pathway. The loss of neurofibromin function predisposes individuals to both benign and malignant neoplasms, including malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors, optic pathway gliomas, and gastrointestinal stromal tumors. Additionally, women with NF

Reduced Fusiform Gyrus Activation During Face Processing in Pediatric Brain Tumor Survivors.

OBJECTIVE: The neural mechanisms contributing to the social problems of pediatric brain tumor survivors (PBTS) are unknown. Face processing is important to social communication, social behavior, and peer acceptance. Research with other populations with social difficulties, namely autism spectrum disorder, suggests atypical brain activation in areas important for face processing. This case-controlled functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) study compared brain activation during face processing in PBTS and typically developing (TD) youth. METHODS: Participants included 36 age-, gender-, an

Patterns of comorbidity, functioning, and service use for US children with ADHD, 2007.

OBJECTIVE: To determine patterns of comorbidity, functioning, and service use for US children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). METHODS: Bivariate and multivariable cross-sectional analyses were conducted on data from the 2007 National Survey of Children's Health on 61 779 children ages 6 to 17 years, including 5028 with ADHD. RESULTS: Parent-reported diagnosed prevalence of ADHD was 8.2%. Children with ADHD were more likely to have other mental health and neurodevelopmental conditions. Parents reported that 46% of children with ADHD had a learning disability versus 5% wi

Comparison of Adaptive Functioning in Children with Williams Beuren Syndrome and Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Cross-Syndrome Study.

Williams Beuren syndrome (WBS) and autism spectrum disorder (ASD) have been long considered as "polar opposite" disorders. Although children with WBS appears to be hypersociable, recent researches have revealed difficulties in socio-communicative skills such as shared attention, showing or giving objects, social relationships comprehension, pragmatic use of language, and emotion's recognition. The aim of this cross-syndrome study is to compare clinician-report adaptive profiles of two wide developmental range children by means of Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scales-Interview Edition, Survey Form

Patients' experiences of disruptions associated with post-stroke dysarthria.

BACKGROUND: Post-stroke dysarthria rehabilitation should consider social participation for people with dysarthria, but before this approach can be adopted, an understanding of the psychosocial impact of dysarthria is required. Despite the prevalence of dysarthria as a result of stroke, there is a paucity of research into this communication disorder, particularly studies that address the experiences of individuals. The available literature focuses mainly on the perceptions of others or includes groups of mixed aetiologies. AIMS: To investigate the beliefs and experiences of people with dysarth

Evidence of Pragmatic Impairments in Speech and Proverb Interpretation in Schizophrenia.

Schizophrenia has been suggested to involve linguistic pragmatic deficits. In this study, two aspects of pragmatic ability were assessed; comprehension and production. Drawing on relevance theory and Gricean implicatures to assess shared attention and interpretation in a linguistic context, discourse samples and proverb interpretation were transcribed from recorded interviews with patients with schizophrenia and control subjects. The productive aspect of implicatures was assessed by quantifying the use of 'connectors' in discourse. Receptive aspects were assessed by scoring interpretations of

Apocalypse terminable and interminable: operation outreach for Vietnam veterans.

In 1979 a program called Operation Outreach began to provide comprehensive and integrated psychosocial services to Vietnam veterans. The 136 vet centers, housed in storefronts and other nongovernment buildings, are staffed by Vietnam veterans and others knowledgeable about the horrors of that war; many of them are not mental health professionals. To date the centers have treated approximately 100,000 veterans out of the several hundred thousand who may be experiencing the effects of posttraumatic stress disorders. The author briefly discusses the history of the centers and describes the theore

Establishing a research advisory committee in addictions services with a focus on social needs and social isolation.

BACKGROUND: Substance use disorders and unmet social needs (like housing instability and social isolation) are major contributors to U.S. morbidity and mortality. We, patients, staff and researchers, established a research advisory committee (RAC) in an addictions treatment setting to guide research and interventions based on lived-experience. METHODS: We employed community engaged outreach methods to recruit, train, and establish the RAC, and the 10-Step Framework for Continuous Patient-Engagement to advise research activities, and to initiate our own research. RESULTS: The RAC contributed

Imitative and contagious behaviors in animals and their potential roles in the study of neurodevelopmental disorders.

Social learning in the forms of imitative and contagious behaviors are essential for learning abilities and social interaction. However, children with neurodevelopmental disorders and intellectual disabilities show impairments in these behaviors, which profoundly affect their communication skills and cognitive functions. Although these deficits are well studied in humans, pre-clinical animal model assessments of imitative and contagious behavioral deficits are limited. Here, we first define various forms of social learning as well as their developmental and evolutionary significance in humans.

Selective Mutism and Its Relations to Social Anxiety Disorder and Autism Spectrum Disorder.

In current classification systems, selective mutism (SM) is included in the broad anxiety disorders category. Indeed, there is abundant evidence showing that anxiety, and social anxiety in particular, is a prominent feature of SM. In this article, we point out that autism spectrum problems in addition to anxiety problems are sometimes also implicated in SM. To build our case, we summarize evidence showing that SM, social anxiety disorder (SAD), and autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are allied clinical conditions and share communalities in the realm of social difficulties. Following this, we addre

Cognitive behavioural group therapy for social phobia: evidence of transportability to community clinics.

Cognitive Behavioural Group Therapy (CBGT) for social phobia has been shown to be efficacious within research units and effective within a variety of real world clinical settings. However, most effectiveness studies of CBGT for social phobia have (a) used protocols without demonstrated efficacy, (b) not included direct comparison groups, and/or (c) contained features of efficacy trials. This study addressed these limitations by using a benchmarking strategy to compare outcomes from the same CBGT protocol used in both a research unit and a community clinic. Research (N = 71) and community (N =

Abnormal cortical activation during silent reading in adolescents with autism spectrum disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a developmental disorder characterized by communication deficits and social difficulties, and individuals with ASD frequently exhibit varied levels of language abilities. However, the neurophysiological mechanisms underlying their language deficits remain unclear. To gain insight into the neurophysiological mechanisms of receptive language deficits, we assessed cortical activation patterns in adolescents with ASD during silent word-reading. METHODS: We used magnetoencephalography to measure cortical activation during a silent word-reading task in 1

Enabling dads and improving First Nations adolescent mental health: a pragmatic randomised controlled study.

INTRODUCTION: There are few empirically supported social and emotional well-being programmes for First Nations adolescents, and we found none targeting those living in Aboriginal communities in remote areas of Australia. The dearth of social and emotional well-being programmes is concerning given that adolescents in remote Australia are at much greater risk of mental disorder and suicide. Our pragmatic community-based research intervention 'Enabling Dads and Improving First Nations Adolescent Mental Health' is designed by and for First Nations people living in remote communities to promote and

Cannabidiol as a suggested candidate for treatment of autism spectrum disorder.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is characterized by persistent deficits in social communication, restricted and repetitive patterns of behavior, interests, or activities and often intellectual disabilities. ASD has a number of prevalent co-morbidities, such as sleep disorders, attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder and epilepsy. No effective treatment for the core symptoms of ASD is currently available. There is increasing interest in cannabinoids, especially cannabidiol (CBD), as monotherapy or add-on treatment for the core symptoms and co-morbidities of ASD. In this review we summarize the
