Social dominance is fundamental to social organization across species and plays a critical role in shaping behavior, physiology, and health. Despite the complexity of social organization, researchers have successfully developed animal models to investigate social dominance under controlled experimental conditions across a variety of species, including male rodents. However, measures of social rank among female mice remain poorly understood, limiting the generalizability of commonly used social dominance assays. Here, we systematically evaluated four commonly used behavioral assays of social do

The aim of the present study was to evaluate whether the anxiety-increasing effects of chronic psychosocial stress generalize to non-social (i.e. heterotypic) stressful situations. To investigate this issue, we repeatedly exposed rats to predictable or unpredictable psychosocial stress for 5 or 12 days and examined their anxiety in two markedly different contexts: the elevated plus maze and social interaction tests. Psychosocial stress and the social interaction test were administered under highly similar conditions, i.e. the two situations were homotypic. Psychosocial stress did not affect an

Chemosignals found in human body odors (BOs) convey information about a person's emotional state and elicit observable responses in others. While mindfulness typically enhances parasympathetic tone and reduces anxiety, little is known about how BOs modulate these effects. This study investigated how emotional and non-emotional human BOs influence autonomic nervous system activity - heart rate variability (HRV) and electrodermal activity (EDA) - during mindfulness practice in individuals with social anxiety. The role of baseline HRV as a predictor of intervention outcome was explored. Ninety-ei

Parkinson's disease and dementia are highly stigmatized, creating social exclusion and inequality by depriving persons living with these conditions of their human rights and threatening their health, well-being, and quality of life. Challenging the stigma associated with these conditions is a key public health priority across national and international settings, and arts-based approaches are advocated to achieve this. We are researchers who use artistic and creative media including documentary films, research-based theatre, dance, circus and graphic narrative to challenge dominant and oppressi

Disorders of decreased sound tolerance such as misophonia and hyperacusis cause significant distress through strong negative emotional and physiological reactions to everyday sounds. These conditions have been associated with poor mental and physical health as they impact day to day life. Prior to the recent development of consensus definitions of misophonia and hyperacusis, attempts to determine the prevalence of these conditions have been hindered by the ambiguity and inconsistency of their descriptions. Despite this, certain populations have been suggested to more frequently experience miso

BACKGROUND: Associative learning, defined as the ability to form connections between events based on temporal or spatial contiguity, is typically enhanced by social stimuli. Whether social stimuli similarly enhance associative learning in autism, particularly among minimally speaking children, is unknown. This study examined social enhancement of associative learning in neurotypical (NT), autistic preschoolers who use spoken language (ASD-S), and minimally speaking autistic (ASD-MS) preschoolers.
METHODS: Seventy-two children aged 24-56 months (19 NT, 30 ASD-S, 23 ASD-MS) completed a novel ey

Social connection is a core component of well-being. Older adults with declining physical functioning or serious health conditions are at particular risk for social isolation and loneliness, and often rely on a family caregiver to facilitate their social participation. Using data from the 2015 and 2017 National Health and Aging Trends Study and the National Survey of Caregiving, this study sought to elucidate dyadic interdependence in the relationship between physical vitality and social participation, among care recipient-caregiver dyads (152 dyads with dementia; 475 dyads without dementia).

Social anxiety symptoms are highly prevalent in adolescents and negatively impact their social and academic functioning, highlighting the need for effective low-threshold interventions. This randomised controlled trial evaluated the guided online intervention SOPHIE for adolescents (N = 133; 11-17 years) with social anxiety disorder (SAD; treatment) or subclinical social anxiety (indicated prevention) compared to care-as-usual control condition and qualitatively explored their experiences. Outcomes were assessed at baseline, mid-intervention (4 weeks), post-intervention (8 weeks) and 5-month f

Fatigue is complex, representing simultaneously a physiological, psychological and social phenomenon. The sociological approach attempts to understand the experience of fatigue and its characterization at diverse periods and in various social contexts. After giving a sociological history of different forms of fatigue through the ages (acedia, melancholy, neurasthenia, chronic fatigue syndrome, etc.), this article proposes a social epidemiology of fatigue in the current period. Objectification of working and living conditions allows us to illustrate social inequalities in fatigue and exhaustion

PURPOSE: Recognizing outdoor exercise enjoyment as a vital protective factor for public mental health, this study constructed a moderated mediation model to examine the associations between personality traits (specifically extraversion and neuroticism) and outdoor exercise enjoyment. The investigation focused on the dual mediating roles of basic psychological need satisfaction and frustration. Furthermore, it explored the boundary conditions of social support to determine how environmental factors interact with individual dispositions.
METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted with 527

Recent scholarship has emphasised the importance of social interventions in mental health, broadly defined as interventions designed to deliver social benefits that drive positive mental health consequences to their beneficiaries. While more is understood about the impact of some types (i.e., social-relational interventions) globally, impacts of social interventions addressing broader systemic and material conditions linked to mental health, such as poverty and access to welfare systems, are less understood. Addressing this evidence gap is critical for advancing a holistic agenda in the global

BACKGROUND: With the pervasiveness of social media, online health communities (OHCs) are an important tool for facilitating information sharing and support among people with chronic health conditions. Importantly, OHCs offer insight into conversations about the lived experiences of people with particular health conditions. Little is known about the aspects of OHCs that are important to maintain safe and productive conversations that support health.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess the provision of social support and the role of active moderation in OHCs developed in accordance with and m

BACKGROUND: The reality of gynecological patients represents a distinct subgroup of the population in which social and psychological distress can coexist alongside the burden of the disease. "Unmet social needs," including social distress, which encompasses gender and family violence, abuse, unemployment, and food insecurity, are now widely recognized as critical determinants of health. Some studies have examined the social needs experienced by patients with gynecological disorders, but primarily in gynecologic oncology patients.
OBJECTIVE: This study aims to assess the prevalence of socio-ps

Research on social priming in speech perception has focused on Western contexts and typically examined aggregate effects rather than temporal dynamics. To address these gaps, we investigated how social primes modulate L1 Japanese speech perception over time using a visual matched-guise transcription-in-noise task. University students in the Tokyo area transcribed native Japanese sentences while viewing one of four visual primes: an East Asian face, a Southeast Asian face, a Black face, or an East Asian face with a Chinese name. Results revealed nonlinear learning trajectories, with accuracy im

PURPOSE: There is a growing population of older people living alone within the context of dramatic population ageing and changing living arrangements. However, little is known about the quality of life (QoL) of older people living alone in Mainland China. This study aimed to investigate QoL and its related factors among Chinese older people who live alone.
METHODS: A stratified random cluster sample of 521 community-dwelling older people living alone in Shanghai completed a structured questionnaire through face-to-face interviews. QoL was measured using the Older People's Quality of Life Ques

BACKGROUND: Adolescence is a period characterized by a high vulnerability to emotional disorders, which are modulated by biological, psychological, and social factors. However, the underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood.
METHODS: Combining physical or emotional social defeat stress (PS and ES) and pair or isolation rearing conditions, we investigated the effects of stress type and social support on emotional behavior and central immune molecules in adolescent mice, including anxiety, social fear, and social interaction strategies, as well as changes in microglia-specific molecules (io

The idea that art connects us to others is culturally compelling, yet empirical evidence linking art engagement to social cognition remains mixed across paradigms, methods, and timescales. We develop the thesis that art functions as a scaffold for social cognition, rather than a direct intervention on social-cognitive abilities. From this perspective, art structures the conditions under which social cognition unfolds by shaping whether individuals engage with socially meaningful content, how deeply they become involved, and whether they return to similar experiences over time. The scaffold mod

Carstensen's selectivity theory, which explains age-related change in social behavior in terms of emotion conservation and increasing discrimination among social partners, was investigated in 2 studies. In Study 1, 80 people aged 14 to 95 classified descriptions of people according to their similarities as social partners in terms of affect anticipated in the interaction and that this dimension was most important to older people. Study 2 showed how anticipated social endings influence partner selection: 380 people aged 11 to 92 chose familiar or novel partners under unspecified and ending cond

BACKGROUND: Children with special healthcare needs (CSHCN) live with long-term physical, developmental, behavioural, or mental conditions that affect everyday functioning and require specialized care. According to the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF), such conditions may cause impairments in body functions and structures, limitations in activities, and restrictions in participation, shaped by environmental factors. Evidence on social participation and its correlates in CSHCN remains limited. Therefore, we aimed to identify which correlates are associated

Subjects with agoraphobia (N = 25), panic disorder (N = 25), social phobia (N = 19) or generalized anxiety disorder (N = 10) and controls with no psychiatric history (N = 16) underwent two provocation tests, voluntary hyperventilation and inhalation of 5% CO2 in air, and three experimental control conditions. They were measured on three elements of the panic reaction: somatic symptoms, psychic anxiety and fears of impending doom, and on a standard YES/NO measure of panic attack. The provocation conditions produced increased somatic symptoms and psychic anxiety across all groups relative to the
