Impaired threat prioritisation after selective bilateral amygdala lesions.

The amygdala is proposed to process threat-related information in non-human animals. In humans, empirical evidence from lesion studies has provided the strongest evidence for a role in emotional face recognition and social judgement. Here we use a face-in-the-crowd (FITC) task which in healthy control individuals reveals prioritised threat processing, evident in faster serial search for angry compared to happy target faces. We investigate AM and BG, two individuals with bilateral amygdala lesions due to Urbach-Wiethe syndrome, and 16 control individuals. In lesion patients we show a reversal o

HPVoice: a single-blind three-arm RCT on social media communication strategies among adolescents in Tuscany, Italy.

INTRODUCTION: Cervical cancer is the first cancer potentially eliminable through widespread HPV vaccination. In Italy, despite free access, vaccine coverage among adolescents remains low. Psychological factors such as information avoidance (IA), the tendency to ignore threatening information, can influence vaccine decisions and contribute to vaccine hesitancy (VH). While social media offers new avenues for health communication, their effectiveness in reducing VH is uncertain. This study investigates the impact of Instagram-based communication strategies on adolescents' HPV knowledge and VH. M

Trauma-Aware, Healing-Informed Approaches to Health Promotion for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples: A Narrative Review.

ISSUE ADDRESSED: Oppression and violence associated with colonisation have contributed to intergenerational trauma and health inequities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Health promotion can help reduce inequities by strengthening connections that support social and emotional wellbeing and enable conditions for communities to lead healthy lives. While culturally responsive health promotion strategies exist, it is unknown the extent to which these account for trauma. METHODS: We conducted a narrative review to examine the intersection of evidence describing social and emotion

Childhood maltreatment and suicidal ideation among Chinese adolescents: Moderated mediation effect of perceived social support and maladaptive cognitive emotion regulation strategies.

BACKGROUND: Although previous studies have shown that childhood maltreatment is a risk factor for adolescent suicidal ideation, less is known about the mediating and moderating mechanisms underlying this association. OBJECTIVE: The current study aimed to investigate the relationship between childhood maltreatment and suicidal ideation among adolescents, as well as the mediating role of maladaptive cognitive emotion regulation strategies (maladaptive CERSs) and the moderating role of perceived social support. METHODS: In a cross-sectional design, 4005 adolescents (Mage = 14.24 years, SD = 1.5

Hub-connected functional connectivity within social brain network weakens the association with real-life social network in schizophrenia patients.

Hubs in the brain network are the regions with high centrality and are crucial in the network communication and information integration. Patients with schizophrenia (SCZ) exhibit wide range of abnormality in the hub regions and their connected functional connectivity (FC) at the whole-brain network level. Study of the hubs in the brain networks supporting complex social behavior (social brain network, SBN) would contribute to understand the social dysfunction in patients with SCZ. Forty-nine patients with SCZ and 27 healthy controls (HC) were recruited to undertake the resting-state magnetic r

Virtual Reality-Based Psychotherapy in Social Anxiety Disorder: fMRI Study Using a Self-Referential Task.

BACKGROUND: Although it has been well demonstrated that the efficacy of virtual reality therapy for social anxiety disorder is comparable to that of traditional cognitive behavioral therapy, little is known about the effect of virtual reality on pathological self-referential processes in individuals with social anxiety disorder. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to determine changes in self-referential processing and their neural mechanisms following virtual reality treatment. METHODS: We recruited participants with and without a primary diagnosis of social anxiety disorder to undergo clinical assessments

Utility of an Observational Social Skill Assessment as a Measure of Social Cognition in Autism.

Models of impaired social competence in autism spectrum disorder (ASD) highlight deficits in social cognition and social behavior. The Contextual Assessment of Social Skills (CASS) is a laboratory-based assessment of conversation ability in which participants interact with trained confederates who act interested (CASS-I) and bored (CASS-B), sequentially. The increased ecological validity of the CASS allows for better generalization to real-world social situations. Participants' perceptions of confederate behavior, assessed by the CASS Conversation Rating Scale (CRS), might offer additional uti

Factors Influencing the Prevalence of PTSD Tendencies on Social Media During Emergencies.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a psychological condition that may develop after exposure to severe traumatic events, particularly in unexpected situations characterized by high uncertainty and stress. As social media has become an integral part of daily life, it serves as a platform for sharing personal experiences, emotional expressions, and public responses during emergencies. Grounded in Protection Motivation Theory, this study explores the factors associated with PTSD tendencies expressed on social media during emergencies. Using large-scale user-generated data from social media,

Cognitive, Social, and Emotional-Behavioral Outcomes in Children and Adolescents With Beckwith-Wiedemann Syndrome.

Although Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome spectrum (BWSp) is not usually associated with intellectual disability, recent evidences calls for further investigation of cognitive development and academic skills in children with BWSp. Moreover, research has documented social difficulties and emotional-behavioral problems associated with BWSp. Nevertheless, a full characterization of socio-emotional development in BWSp is still lacking. In the current study, cognitive and socio-emotional development was assessed in 29 children with BWSp aged 5-18 years, using a test of nonverbal intelligence, a neuropsy

Self- and other-perceptions of interpersonal problems: Effects of generalized anxiety, social anxiety, and depression.

Despite attention on overlap and distinction between generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), social anxiety disorder (SAD), and major depressive disorder (MDD), interpersonal specificity (distinct, prototypical interpersonal features) between the disorders has been understudied. There is emerging evidence for such specificity (e.g., Erickson et al., 2016), but most studies relied on self-report, and not all studies controlled for shared variance between the disorders, complicating interpretation of findings. The present study extended the literature by examining unique interpersonal correlates of

Behavioural and emotional responses to the 2014 Ebola outbreak in Nigeria: a narrative review.

This paper reviews the behavioural and emotional responses to the 2014 Ebola virus disease (EVD) outbreak in Nigeria as documented in scientific publications and portrayed in the media between 21 July 2014 and 30 March 2015. The outbreak generated national interest and there were reports of patients suspected of having Ebola being avoided for fear of contracting the disease, misconceptions about EVD prevention and protests against locations of EVD-treatment centres. Suspected and confirmed EVD patients, as well as healthcare workers (HCW) who treated them, faced stigma and discrimination. The

Alterations of theory of mind network activation in chronic cannabis users.

Chronic cannabis use is associated with cognitive impairment and has been identified as a risk factor for schizophrenia. Patients with schizophrenia show profound deficits in social cognition such as the ability to attribute mental states to others, referred to as "theory of mind" (ToM). Aberrant activation of the ToM network has been demonstrated across different phases of schizophrenia, including at-risk stages. Accordingly, we aimed to investigate the ToM network in chronic cannabis users. Fifteen cannabis users received functional brain imaging during performance of a ToM cartoon story tas

Mapping Barriers and Facilitators to Help-Seeking After Sexual Violence: An Intersectional-Ecological Scoping Review.

Sexual violence survivors' help-seeking and disclosure experiences are shaped by interacting personal, relational, institutional, and sociocultural conditions. Research on help-seeking after sexual violence has often focused on individual or relational explanations, with limited synthesis of how barriers and facilitators operate across ecological levels and are differently experienced across survivors' social locations. Guided by the socio-ecological model and informed by intersectionality, this scoping review mapped barriers and facilitators to help-seeking and disclosure after sexual violenc

Mini-SPIN: A brief screening assessment for generalized social anxiety disorder.

The objectives of this study are to develop a brief self-rated screening instrument for generalized social anxiety disorder (GSAD) and to test the efficiency of the instrument. The Social Phobia Inventory (SPIN), a 17-item self-administered scale for GSAD, was given to 263 individuals with GSAD and controls. A subset of three items yielding high sensitivity and specificity for the diagnosis of GSAD was identified. This abbreviated version of the SPIN (Mini-SPIN) was administered to a group of managed care patients in conjunction with an epidemiological study of GSAD. Patients (n = 7,165) were
