Community Health Workers in the Veterans Administration: Exploring Opportunities and Barriers to Integration for Rural and Caregiver Populations.

BACKGROUND: Rural Veterans and caregivers face challenges related to health care access, care coordination, and institutional trust-areas where Community Health Workers (CHWs) are well positioned to make an impact. Despite their potential, CHW integration into complex federal systems such as the US Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) remains limited. CHWs represent a promising strategy to enhance access and care continuity for rural Veterans and caregivers. OBJECTIVES: To examine perceptions of community and institutional partners regarding integration of CHWs into the VA to support rural Vet

Systematic Review on the Aftereffects of Near-Death Experiences.

Near-death experiences (NDEs) are events reported by individuals close to death. This review examines the aftereffects of NDEs based on scientific literature from 2014 to 2024. Positive NDEs often lead to increased spirituality, reduced fear of death, a deeper appreciation of life, and greater compassion. In contrast, negative NDEs, though less common, can cause confusion, emotional distress, and lasting trauma. The subjective interpretation by those who experience an NDE strongly shapes its impact, influencing both personal growth and challenges in social or emotional integration. Health prof

Brief report: youth pathways out of homelessness - preliminary findings.

While there exists an extensive body of knowledge regarding the risks associated with youth homelessness, very little work has addressed the process of exiting street contexts. This paper reports baseline findings from an ongoing longitudinal study assessing factors associated with a successful transition out of homelessness. Fifty-one formerly homeless youth who obtained stable housing in the past 2 months to 2 years participated in this study which took place in two Canadian urban centres. Findings include poorer functioning across all domains for youth residing in housing contexts without s

Self-esteem modulates directed forgetting of emotional social feedback.

BACKGROUND: According to self-motivation theories and the mnemic neglect mechanism, differences in self-esteem levels lead to memory bias for social feedback of different valences, and may enable self-esteem to moderate individuals' directed forgetting of social feedback. However, this hypothesis has not been tested in previous studies. To address this, the present study employed two behavioral experiments to examine the moderating effect of self-esteem on directed forgetting of social feedback. METHODS: In Experiment 1, a directed forgetting paradigm involving valenced (positive or negative)

The process of social death in patients with hip fracture.

People with chronic disability and uncontrollable long-term complications following hip fracture have characterist.ics that may predispose them to social death. Continuous physical disability can have negative physical, psychological, and social consequences in these patients. To design care interventions for preventing and controlling social death, it is essential to identify the dimensions and characteristics of this process. Therefore, the present study aimed to explain the process of social death in hip fracture patients. In this study, which was conducted using a grounded theory approach,

"I need to talk, to talk to people": a qualitative study of service user and carer views and priorities for social functioning in schizophrenia-spectrum disorders.

Improving social functioning for people with schizophrenia-spectrum disorders is a priority for service users, carers and broader society. While many face challenges with social functioning, a proportion do obtain a job, a partner, and other valued social goals. Informal carers are key stakeholders, support recovery and may support service users' social functioning, though some research suggests carer and service user priorities may differ. Research suggests item content in measures of social functioning may not fully capture people's social world. The aim of this study was to explore service

Unpacking the Social Media Happiness Paradox: How Social Media Stressors Undermine Subjective Well-Being Through Social Media Fatigue.

With the increasing embeddedness of social media in everyday life, digital platforms have become important spaces for interpersonal connection, self-presentation, and emotional experience. However, continuous social media engagement does not necessarily enhance users' happiness; instead, it may coincide with psychological strain and lower subjective well-being (SWB), forming what this study refers to as the social media happiness paradox. In this study, the paradox is positioned as the focal phenomenon to be explained rather than as a standalone empirical construct. Drawing on social compariso

Latent profiles of social networks and their association with digital health readiness among rural older adults with hypertension.

Person-centered approaches to social networks profiles and their association with digital health readiness (DHR) remain underexplored among rural older adults with hypertension. This study aimed to identify latent social networks profiles and examine their independent association with DHR in this population. A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 576 rural older adults with hypertension by using the Lubben Social Network Scale-6 and the Digital Health Readiness Questionnaire (DHRQ) in Hunan Province, China. Latent profile analysis identified social networks profiles. Multivariable linear

Constructing and expressing the story world: neural correlates of narrative generation.

Narrative generation requires the integration of linguistic, social, and conceptual knowledge to transform internal representations into coherent discourse. Few studies have examined how the distinct stages of comprehension and production are supported by the brain. In this fMRI study, 27 participants viewed a nine-panel cartoon, planned a story, and then orally produced it during scanning. Story comprehension elicited greater activation than fixation within the default mode network (DMN), including medial prefrontal cortex, posterior cingulate cortex, and precuneus, as well as the right insul

Network Analysis of Social Anxiety, Avoidant Behavior, and Spiritual Well-Being in Breast Cancer Patients: A Pathway to Targeted Psychosocial Interventions.

BACKGROUND: Social anxiety and avoidance behaviors are prevalent among breast cancer patients, yet their interrelationships with protective factors such as spiritual well-being remain poorly understood. Network analysis offers a novel approach to identify central and bridge nodes that may serve as key targets for psychosocial intervention. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study of 302 female breast cancer patients from a tertiary hospital in China. Participants completed the Social Anxiety Scale (SAS_1), Social Avoidance Scale (SAS_2), and the Functional Assessment of Chronic Illness T

From early vigilance to sustained bias: Temporal dynamics of social evaluative feedback processing modulated by fear of positive evaluation.

Fear of positive evaluation (FPE), a core cognitive feature of social anxiety disorder (SAD), is posited to drive maladaptive responses to social feedback, yet its neurocognitive underpinnings remain poorly understood. This study employed event-related potentials (ERPs) to investigate how FPE modulates neural dynamics during social feedback processing. High- and low-FPE individuals (N = 48) completed a social evaluation perception task, where they received positive or negative feedback from different sources (i.e., human/computer). Individuals exhibited sensitivity to feedback source and valen

Altered white matter fractional anisotropy and social impairment in children with autism spectrum disorder.

Individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) have severe difficulties in social interaction and communication, as well as restricted and/or stereotyped patterns of behavior. Previous studies have suggested that abnormal neural connectivity might be associated with higher information processing dysfunction involving social impairment. However, the white matter structure in ASD is poorly understood. To explore this, we conducted a voxel-based, whole-brain diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) analysis to determine fractional anisotropy (FA), λ(1), λ(2) and λ(3) in high-functioning children with ASD

Psychiatric rehabilitation in routine Indian mental health practice: A review of social protections for persons with mental health conditions.

BACKGROUND: An estimated 200 million Indians have mental health conditions - a sizeable proportion of them requiring psychiatric rehabilitation services. The numbers of mental health professionals are abysmally low. Early psycho-social rehabilitation interventions can improve functional outcomes, reducing disability. Psycho-social interventions have been made possible with the shift away from medical and charity models of disability to the establishment of social protections for vulnerable groups. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The authors have undertaken a narrative review of all the social protecti
