Modeling stress-induced social and anxiety-like behaviors in mice: Towards a preclinical framework for Munchausen-like traits.

Munchausen syndrome is a psychiatric condition in which individuals feign or induce illness to gain attention, care, and sympathy. Despite being clinically recognized, its biological underpinnings remain largely unexplored, highlighting the need for suitable animal models. Male mice were subjected to social isolation and restraint stress (2 h daily for 7 days) to induce chronic stress. Behavioral changes were assessed using a social interaction test with freely moving or confined juvenile and adult male conspecifics. Anxiety-like behaviors were evaluated by the open field test and elevated plu…

Effects of partnerships between people with mobility challenges and service dogs.

OBJECTIVE. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of partnerships between people with disabilities and service dogs on functional performance and social interaction. METHOD. A single-subject, alternating treatment design was used. The participants were 3 women with mobility challenges who owned service dogs. For each participant, time and perceived amount of effort for two tasks were measured for functional performance. Interaction and satisfaction levels were measured for social interactions. RESULTS. Primary findings were that service dog partnerships decreased performance time…

Infant physiological activity and the early emergence of social communication.

Early in life, social engagement is facilitated by effective regulation during times of rest and stress. Physiological regulation during soc … one, we measured vagal tone, vagal suppression, and heart rate-defined sustained attention during a social interaction with a caregiver (i.e., the Still-Face procedure) in 21 infants aged 3-4 months. At 9 months, caregivers reported on their infant's early social-communication skills. Results suggest that RSA, RSA suppression, and heart rate-defined sustained attent …

Children's understanding of abstract and real-world social groups.

The present work explores how two intuitive theories inform young children's inferences about social groups. In three studies (N = 821), we tested whether 3- to 7-year-old children view novel (Studies 1 and 3), gender (Studies 2 and 3), and racial (Studies 2 and 3) groups as (a) marking individuals who are fundamentally similar to one another and (b) marking patterns of social relationships and interactions. We found evidence for both of these sets of beliefs. Children predicted that ingroup members would be more similar to one another than outgroup members for all of the groups tested. Childr

Three- but not 2-year-olds misinform others spontaneously in an interaction-based task.

One-year-olds spontaneously inform others, but less is known about the emergence of spontaneous misinforming. The current study investigated whether young children who spontaneously inform ignorant others also deliberately misinform others in matched uninstructed interactions. Conceptually, misinforming provides a convincing case for interaction-based, implicit false belief understanding. In a simplified, anticipatory and interactive paradigm, a protagonist puppet played with the child and an object and then hid the object in one of two boxes. When the protagonist was temporarily absent, eithe

Pain Phenotypes and Falls in Older Adults: Cross-Sectional Associations by Social Engagement.

BACKGROUND: Pain is commonly associated with falls in older adults, but the associations between different pain phenotypes and falls remain unclear. It is also uncertain whether social engagement is associated with modification of these associations. This study examined the cross-sectional associations between pain phenotypes and falls in older adults and assessed whether these associations varied by social engagement. METHODS: We used data from the 2018 wave of the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) to categorize participants into four pain phenotypes with a rule-based a

Attentional biases to body shape images in adolescents with anorexia nervosa: an exploratory eye-tracking study.

Body image distortion (BID) plays an important role in the etiology and maintenance of anorexia nervosa (AN). Previous studies of BID in AN showed small biases in visual scanning behavior (VSB) towards images of body shapes. The aim of this study is to investigate biases in VSB when body shape images compete with images with a different theme (social interactions) for subjects׳ attention. When images of thin body shapes (TBS) were presented alongside images of social interactions, AN patients (n=13) spent significantly more time looking at TBSs rather than at social interactions, but controls …

The presence of a social stimulus reduces cocaine-seeking in a place preference conditioning paradigm.

BACKGROUND: One challenge in the treatment of substance use disorders is to re-engage the interest toward non-drug-related activities. Among these activities, social interaction has had a prominent role due to its positive influence on treatment outcome. AIMS AND METHODS: Our aim was to study whether the presence of a social stimulus during the cocaine-induced conditioned place preference test was able to reduce the time spent in the drug-paired compartment. For that purpose, mice were trained for four days on a conditioned place preference task with one compartment paired with cocaine and th…

Social-like responses are inducible in asocial Mexican cavefish despite the exhibition of strong repetitive behavior.

Social behavior is a hallmark of complex animal systems; however, some species appear to have secondarily lost this social ability. In these non-social species, whether social abilities are permanently lost or suppressed is unclear. The blind cavefish Astyanax mexicanus is known to be asocial. Here, we reveal that cavefish exhibited social-like interactions in familiar environments but suppressed these interactions in stress-associated unfamiliar environments. Furthermore, the level of suppression in sociality was positively correlated with that of stereotypic repetitive behavior, as seen in m

Relationships between the social communication questionnaire and pragmatic language, socialization skills, and behavioral problems in children with autism spectrum disorders.

The Social Communication Questionnaire (SCQ) is one of the most widely used screening instruments for autism spectrum disorder (ASD). This study examined the relationships between the reciprocal social interaction, communication, and repetitive/stereotyped factors on the Strength and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) and pragmatic, socialization, and behavioral problems in children with ASD and children with typical development (TD). Participants were seven- to 11-year-old children with ASD without intellectual disability (n = 52) and with TD (n = 37). The two groups were matched on age and int…

Sources and processes of social influence on health-related choices: A systematic review based on a social-interdependent choice paradigm.

BACKGROUND: Most choices in healthcare are not made in social isolation. However, current econometric models treat patients' preferences as the sole determinants of their choices. Through the lens of sociology and medical sociology theories, this paper presents a systematic literature review of identifiable social influences on patients' choices, serving as a first step in developing a social-interdependent choice paradigm. METHODS: Following the PRISMA guideline and using nine databases, we identified the individual agents or groups involved in health-related choices, the functional content

Assessment of interrelationships between cognitive performance, symptomatic manifestation and social functioning in the acute and clinical stability phase of schizophrenia: insights from a network analysis.

BACKGROUND: It has been shown that various aspects of clinical manifestation of schizophrenia are strongly related to social functioning. However, it remains unknown as to whether similar factors predict social functioning at various stages of psychosis. Therefore, the present study aimed to compare the effects of interconnections between various domains of psychopathology and neurocognition on social functioning in people during acute phase of psychosis and those during remission of positive and disorganization symptoms using a network analysis. METHODS: Two independent samples of individual

Sex differences in the associations of multidomain risk factor profiles with incident major adverse cardiovascular events.

BACKGROUND: Major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) exhibit sex-specific disparities, but comprehensive analyses of combined genetic and clinical risk factor profiles across sexes remain limited. METHODS: This prospective cohort study included 397,806 UK Biobank participants (55.1% female) without baseline MACE. Five weighted risk scores [social-demographic, lifestyle, metabolic, clinical comorbidity, polygenic risk score (PRS)] were evaluated for associations with incident MACE via sex-stratified Cox proportional hazards regression, interaction analyses, and population-attributable risk (

The looming maladaptive style in social anxiety.

This exploratory study examined the relationship between the looming maladaptive style (i.e., an enduring and traitlike cognitive pattern to appraise threat as rapidly rising in risk, progressively worsening, or actively speeding up and accelerating) and three different aspects of trait social anxiety (i.e., fear of negative evaluation, social interaction anxiety, and public scrutiny fears) as well as general anxiety and depression. A large nonclinical, female-only sample (n=152) completed the Looming Maladaptive Style Questionnaire-II (Riskind, J. H., Williams, N. L., Theodore, L. G., Chrosni…
