The relationship between social support and erectile dysfunction in middle-aged and older males.

BACKGROUND: Erectile dysfunction (ED) is a prevalent condition that affects middle-aged and older men, impacting their sexual health and overall wellbeing. We aimed to investigate the relationship between social support and ED among this specific population. METHODS: Data were collected from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Social support was assessed through various dimensions, including emotional support, material support, and network support. Multivariate logistic regression was performed to examine the association between social support and ED, and a propensity-score-

The feasibility of respondent-driven sampling with people who use drugs in rural Western Cape, South Africa: A qualitative study.

The Western Cape is South Africa's epicentre for tuberculosis (TB) and smoked drug use such as methamphetamine and methaqualone (Mandrax). Despite this, there are limited studies on people who smoke drugs (PWSD) with TB disease in South Africa, partly due to recruitment challenges. Respondent-driven sampling (RDS) is a network-based sampling method used to recruit such key populations. The aim of this qualitative study is to explore the appropriateness and feasibility of RDS as a method for recruiting PWSD for a planned study on TB transmission in this setting. We conducted ten focus group dis

Gender and Intersecting Barriers and Facilitators to Access the HIV Cascade of Care in Manitoba, Canada, Before and During the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Qualitative Study.

Marginalized groups in Manitoba, Canada, especially females and people who inject drugs, are overrepresented in new HIV diagnoses and disproportionately affected by HIV and structural disadvantages. Informed by syndemic theory, our aim was to understand people living with HIV's (PLHIV) gendered and intersecting barriers and facilitators across the cascade of HIV care before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study was co-designed and co-led alongside people with lived experience and a research advisory committee. We employed semi-structured interviews with thirty-two participants and three

They are laughing at me: cerebral mediation of cognitive biases in social anxiety.

The fear of embarrassment and humiliation is the central element of social anxiety. This frequent condition is associated with cognitive biases indicating increased sensitivity to signals of social threat, which are assumed to play a causal role in the maintenance of social anxiety. Here, we employed laughter, a potent medium for the expression of acceptance and rejection, as an experimental stimulus in participants selected for varying degrees of social anxiety to identify cerebral mediators of cognitive biases in social anxiety using functional magnetic resonance imaging in combination with

Altered cognitive network coupling in first-episode depression.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive impairment is common in depression, yet most studies examine cognitive domains separately and rarely characterize patterns of cognitive coupling at the behavioral network level. This study investigated cognitive network architecture in first-episode depression and examined patterns of altered cognitive coupling among cognitive measures. METHODS: 201 First-episode depression patients and matched healthy controls completed MCCB subtests (excluding social cognition). Group differences in cognitive performance were examined, and symptom-cognition associations were tested usi

Theta-Burst Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation for Posttraumatic Stress Disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a highly prevalent psychiatric disorder associated with disruption in social and occupational function. Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) represents a novel approach to PTSD, and intermittent theta-burst stimulation (iTBS) is a new, more rapid administration protocol with data supporting efficacy in depression. The authors conducted a sham-controlled study of iTBS for PTSD. METHODS: Fifty veterans with PTSD received 10 days of sham-controlled iTBS (1,800 pulses/day), followed by 10 unblinded sessions. Primary outcome measures included a

The effect of social exclusion on the cognitive health of middle-aged and older adults: A systematic review.

This systematic review aimed to evaluate the independent and joint effects of social exclusion in three specific domains-economic, social relations, and civic participation-on the cognitive health of middle-aged and older adults. Longitudinal studies from January 2000 to October 2023 were identified via Web of Science, Scopus, and PubMed, with sixty-five studies meeting inclusion criteria. The quality of the studies was assessed with Newcastle-Otawa Scale. Analysis revealed a strong association between economic exclusion and cognitive decline, with most studies indicating a significant negativ

The Yin and Yang of support from significant others: Influence of general social support and partner support of avoidance in the context of treatment for social anxiety disorder.

Support from social networks is generally considered to protect against mental disorder but in some circumstances support for negative behaviours (such as avoidance) may be counterproductive. Given the critical interplay between social anxiety disorder and social interactions, it is surprising that the relationship of support from significant others to this disorder has received so little attention. The current study evaluated the reciprocal relationships between perceived social support and perceived partner support for avoidance behaviours (avoidance support) among a sample of 131 participan

The interplay between functional connectivity of medial and lateral visual networks, behavioral measures, and oxytocin receptor gene polymorphism (rs2254298) in autism.

Oxytocin influences various social cognitive functions and is linked to the development of autism. The rs2254298 polymorphism in the oxytocin receptor (OXTR) gene is associated with autism susceptibility and differences in social functioning. However, research exploring the effects of rs2254298 on functional brain connectivity and neuropsychological performance in individuals with autism remains limited. This study included 105 individuals with a clinical diagnosis of autism, confirmed by the Autism Diagnostic Interview-Revised, and 105 typically developing controls (TDC). Both groups underwen

Qualitative analysis of patient interviews on the burden of neuronopathic Gaucher disease in Japan.

BACKGROUND: Gaucher disease (GD) is a rare, autosomal recessive lysosomal storage disorder that adversely affects life expectancy and health-related quality of life (HRQOL). Although HRQOL questionnaires are available for type 1 GD, they are not suitable for patients with the neuronopathic types 2 and 3 GD who have neurological symptoms that develop during early childhood or adolescence. Here we report the development of a language-validated HRQOL questionnaire specifically for patients with neuronopathic types 2 and 3 GD in Japan, which is the first step toward HRQOL questionnaire provision f

Imbalanced Gamma-band Functional Brain Networks of Autism Spectrum Disorders.

Resting gamma-band brain networks are known as an inhibitory component in functional brain networks. Although autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is considered as with imbalanced brain networks, the inhibitory component remains not fully explored. The study reported 10 children with ASD and 10 typically-developing (TD) controls. The power spectral density analysis of the gamma-band signal in the cerebral cortex was performed at the source level. The normalized phase transfer entropy values (nPTEs) were calculated to construct brain connectivity. Gamma-band activity of the ASD group was lower than t

Social support needs of bereaved parents and family members after perinatal loss: A qualitative study.

Perinatal loss is a profoundly distressing experience for many families. While family and friends are often primary sources of informal support for bereaved parents, they may find it challenging to provide the support parents need. This study explores the social support experiences of parents and family members navigating perinatal bereavement in Australia with their informal social networks, drawing on semi-structured interviews with 20 parents and 5 family members. Reflexive thematic analysis identified three themes, along with seven sub-themes reflecting how informal support was enacted, ne

Vulnerable salvation: evangelical Protestant leaders and institutions, drug use and HIV and AIDS in the urban periphery of Rio de Janeiro.

This analysis focuses on the evangelical Protestant responses to drug use and HIV prevention, treatment and care in the urban periphery of Rio de Janeiro. We question how religious institutions, and the positions of pastors, create or reduce various elements of societal illness and vulnerability. We aim to show that the views of pastors may symbolise a form of social regulation that may have a meaningful social impact on drug use and HIV and AIDS. The interviews of 23 evangelical religious leaders were collected. Two case studies of evangelical drug rehabilitation centres (DRC) are derived fro

Restricted Social Engagement Is Associated With Depressive Symptoms in Older Chinese Adults: A Nationwide Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Social isolation has been linked to depressive symptoms in older adults. Previous studies have shown that greater engagement in social activities is associated with better mental health. However, it remains unclear whether restricted social engagement is related to poorer mental health outcomes. This study examined the association between reduced social activities/networking and the presence of depressive symptoms among community-dwelling older Chinese adults. METHODS: During the COVID-19 pandemic, people chose to minimize going out to reduce the risk of infection, creati

The relationship between work-family conflict, stress and depression among Chinese correctional officers: a mediation and network analysis study.

BACKGROUND: Numerous studies have found that depression is prevalent among correctional officers (COs), which may be related to the work-family conflict (WFC) faced by this cohort. Role conflict theory posits that WFC emerges from the incompatibility between the demands of work and family roles, which induces stress and, in turn, results in emotional problems. Thus, this study seeks to investigate the association between WFC and depression, along with examining the mediating role of stress. Further network analysis is applied to identify the core and bridge symptoms within the network of WFC,

Examining Valued Social Participation of Disabled Older Adults Through the Frameworks of Critical Gerontology and Critical Disability Studies.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The importance of social participation for older adults has been well articulated. Missing from this discourse is a critical consideration of how social participation is shaped by political, economic, and social contexts that marginalize aging and disabled bodies. We bridge this gap by applying critical gerontology and critical disability frameworks to our analysis of how access to health and social services and individual and environmental factors are associated with engagement in valued social activities among disabled older adults. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Us

A qualitative exploration of the experiences of people living alone and receiving community-based palliative care.

BACKGROUND: It is projected that in Australia there will be between 28% and 48% of palliative care patients living alone by the year 2031. As such, it will become increasingly important to provide appropriate home-based care in order to support these patients to be cared for and die at home. AIM: This study explored the experiences of community-based palliative care cancer patients who live alone without a caregiver and what psychosocial issues they face. METHODS: Face-to-face semistructured interviews were conducted with eight participants, and constant comparison was used for the analysis.

Exploring adolescent-adult connections, coping, and safety among minoritized youth in neighborhoods impacted by community violence.

Dyadic interviews were conducted with 32 youth ages 13-21 and their self-identified key adult supports to illuminate how adult supports help protect youth in communities impacted by high levels of violence. Interview transcripts were analyzed using thematic content analysis. Youth described choosing social interactions carefully, avoiding high-violence areas, and keeping busy with activities. Many youths discussed the necessity of minimizing contact with peers to avoid violence, resulting in isolation from friends and increased engagement with family at home. Adult supports reflected upon an i
