The association between tooth loss and cognitive function in middle-aged and elderly people in China: A multiple mediation analysis based on the biopsychosocial model.

PURPOSE: This study investigated how tooth loss relates to cognitive function among Chinese middle-aged and older adults, with particular attention to whether nutritional status, depressive symptoms, and social engagement serve as mediating factors in this relationship. METHOD: Data were drawn from the 2015 wave of the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS), comprising 4,386 individuals aged 45 and above. A binary measure of complete tooth loss served as the indicator for dental status. The analysis considered three mediators: the triglyceride-total cholesterol-body weight in

Bone, muscle, and physical function measures in older adults according to levels of social disadvantage: a cross-sectional study.

UNLABELLED: This cross-sectional study of 300 older adults (aged ≥ 50 years) found that less education, lower income, and health care card ownership are associated with reduced bone, muscle, and physical function measures. This underscores the need for targeted preventive strategies for osteoporosis and sarcopenia that address socioeconomic-related disparities. PURPOSE: The prevalence of chronic diseases follows a social gradient, although this is unclear in musculoskeletal conditions. This study aims to examine the association between social disadvantage and diagnostic measures of osteoporos

Using delay discounting to understand impulsive choice in socially anxious individuals: failure to replicate.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Impulsive choice that follows transient anxiety responses is a potentially important outcome that may underlie maladaptive behavioral patterns that co-occur with high levels of social anxiety. However, little research has examined impulsive choice in relation to social anxiety. Rounds, Beck and Grant (2007; Behavior Research and Therapy, 45, 729–735) found that high social anxiety was associated with impulsive choice using a delay discounting procedure, but only in a non-threatening (control) condition, but several procedural confounds in that study may also explain

DESIGN AND PARTICIPANTS: A cross-sectional analysis was conducted on 2,695 stroke survivors from a nationwide cohort in Korea. Participants were stratified in

Socioeconomic environment and cancer incidence: a French population-based study in Normandy.

Leaving methadone maintenance treatment: the role of personality traits and psychiatric status.

This study investigates personality traits and psychiatric status among 174 methadone patients (121 men and 53 women) and 387 untreated controls (191 men and 196 women) in Sweden in 1993 and 1994. The methadone patients were followed up to 1998 with respect to being expelled from treatment. Pretreatment factors, like home background and behavioral factors, were studied in relation to treatment outcome. The methadone patients were interviewed using a structured questionnaire about alcohol and drug use and psychological, social, and behavioral factors. To obtain data about personality traits, th

[Employment after the first myocardial infarct and rehabilitation].

Which are the determinants of return to work in middle aged myocardial infarction patients? This question was analysed by means of a follow-up study on men between 1986 and 1992 (group 1: n = 64, age = 46.6 (+/- 5.4), 5-6 years follow-up; group 2: n = 36, age = 51.2 (+/- 7.5), 2 years follow up), all of whom underwent a cardiac rehabilitation program in our hospital. Our aim was to determine the predictive power of social and psychological as compared to cardiologic factors. These factors were operating under two relevant conditions: 1. relative social homogeneity of the samples; 2. rehabilita

Predictors and course of vocational status, income, and quality of life in people with severe mental illness: a naturalistic study.

Due to high unemployment rates, people with mental illness are at risk of poverty and are deprived of the social and psychological functions of work, such as the provision of social support, structuring of time, and self-esteem, with a negative effect on their perceived quality of life (QoL). Two distinct processes are held responsible for the low work force participation of people with mental illness: 'Social underachievement' and 'social decline'. Social underachievement signifies that, due to early illness onset, the educational attainment of people with mental illness is low and entry to t

Evaluating the association of social determinants of health and patient-reported outcome measures in patients with lisfranc injuries.

BACKGROUND: Social determinants of health (SDOH) have been shown to impact postoperative outcomes for several orthopaedic injuries. Understanding the role of these factors in patients sustaining Lisfranc injury can help identify disparities and target interventions to optimize recovery. METHODS: We retrospectively evaluated the influence of SDOH in postoperative outcomes of patients with Lisfranc injury aged ≥ 18 years. Social Vulnerability Index (SVI) and Area Deprivation Index (ADI) were gathered using patient ZIP codes. Patient-Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs) were collected. RESULTS: Si

An empirical study of older adults' willingness and enthusiasm for informal learning.

INTRODUCTION: As global populations age, promoting informal learning among older adults is crucial for their well-being and social participation. However, research on older adults'informal learning remains limited, especially in non-Western contexts. This study investigates the current status, willingness, and enthusiasm of Chinese older adults for informal learning, as well as the influencing factors from individual, cognitive, and environmental perspectives. METHODS: Using cross-sectional data from the 2018 China General Social Survey (CGSS), this study analyzed 4,688 respondents aged 60 ye

Trends and Sociodemographic Correlates of Social Isolation in the United States, 2006-2024: Evidence from the General Social Survey.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Social isolation is a significant public health concern, yet trends across diverse demographic groups-including age-differentiated patterns across the adult life course-remain poorly characterized. This study examines the prevalence, temporal trends, and sociodemographic correlates of social isolation among U.S. adults of all ages. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Drawing on 10 waves of the General Social Survey (2006-2024; N = 28,269), this study constructs an adapted three-domain social isolation typology-living arrangement, social contact frequency, and religious att
