Health compromising behaviors among Chinese adolescents: role of physical abuse, school experience, and social support.

This study examined the influence of immediate social environment on health compromising behaviors (HCB) among 6564 high school students in China. Results showed that physical abuse by parents was a major risk factor that accounted for high rates of HCB. Perceived positive school experience and social support were protective factors associated with low rates of HCB. These two protective factors also buffered the adverse influence of abuse on the practice of individual HCB. In particular, parental abuse was associated with sexual experimentation, non-fatal self-harm, and suicide behaviors only …

Functions and sources of perceived social support among children affected by HIV/AIDS in China.

While the relationship between perceived social support (PSS) and psychosocial well-being has been well documented in the global literature, existing studies also suggest the existence of multiple domains in definition and measurement of PSS. The current study, utilizing data from 1299 rural children affected by HIV/AIDS in central China, examines the relative importance of PSS functional measures (informational/emotional, material/tangible, affectionate, and social interaction) and PSS structural measures (family/relatives, teachers, friends, and significant others) in predicting psychosocial…

Predictors of treatment response for depression and inadequate social support--the ENRICHD randomized clinical trial.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether the 'dose' of treatment exposure, delivery of specific components of cognitive behavior therapy (CBT), patient adherence and/or use of antidepressants predict favorable depression and social support outcomes after 6 months of cognitive behavioral treatment. METHODS: Secondary analyses of the intervention arm of the Enhancing Recovery in Coronary Heart Disease (ENRICHD) clinical trial involving persons with acute myocardial infarction (MI): n = 641 for the depression outcomes and n = 523 for the social support outcomes. The outcome measures were, for depression:…

Disengagement and social support moderate distress among women with a family history of breast cancer.

Using a cross-sectional, exploratory design, this pilot study analyzed the relationships between familial history of breast cancer and psychological distress in order to evaluate who is more distressed and to assess the possible need for intervention. Coping style, social support, and family relations were investigated as potential moderators of these relationships. Participants were 45 women with a familial history of breast cancer recruited from the Family Registry for Breast Cancer (FRBC) at the Northern California Cancer Center (NCCC). Contrary to previous reports of similar cohorts, the o…

Social support, physical activity and sedentary behavior among 6th-grade girls: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Despite the importance of social support in promoting physical activity, little is known about the relative influence of the type or source of social support on adolescent girls' physical activity and sedentary behaviors. This study examined the associations of two types of social support (social participation in and social encouragement for physical activity) and two social support sources (family and friends) with self-reported daily minutes of physical activity and sedentary behavior among sixth-grade girls in Texas. METHODS: A secondary analysis of 718 sixth-grade girls betwee…

METHODS: Out-patients experiencing a recent onset or exacerbation of vitiligo (n = 31) were compared with out-patients with skin conditions in which psychosomatic factors are commonly were regarded as negligible (n = 116). Stressful events during the last 12 months were assessed with Paykel's Interview for Recent Life Events. Attachment style, alexithymia and social support were assessed with the '…

Sexual abuse, parental bonding, social support, and program retention for women in substance abuse treatment.

Residential programs that provide safe environments and child care can attract perinatal women into treatment. Other factors, however, may prevent some women from benefiting from these programs. Attachment theory suggests that one's early history determines the effectiveness with which one can utilize available social supports. Lower levels of program retention were predicted for women who had been sexually abused and for those who had poor early bonding. Eighty-four women in residential substance abuse treatment programs were studied. Clients who reported sexual abuse also reported lower pare…

Specification of social support behaviours and network dimensions along the HIV continuum for gay men.

This study aimed to investigate social supports that HIV-infected persons find helpful and unhelpful, and the size and composition of networks along the disease continuum. Ninety six HIV-infected and 33 seronegative gay men were interviewed. The HIV continuum was represented by seronegative, HIV asymptomatic and symptomatic groups. Emotional and physical support were the most frequently identified helpful supports. Symptomatic persons identified physical support as helpful more often than asymptomatic persons. Availability, acceptance and nurturing were the most frequently identified helpful e…

Social support and anxiety in pregnant drug abusers and nonusers: unexpected findings of few differences.

Drug-abusing (n = 25) and nonusing (n = 55) pregnant women from a publicly supported prenatal clinic were tested for level of social support and of pregnancy anxiety during the last half of pregnancy. Differences found between the groups were fewer than expected. Drug abusers did not differ from nonusers in overall level of social support or in Appraisal, Belonging, or Tangible subscales. Abusers were found to report lower levels of self esteem; lower self esteem was predicted by drug abuse, having more children and lower socioeconomic status. Drug abusers did not differ from nonusers in their…

Relationship of perceived maternal acceptance-rejection in childhood and social support networks of pregnant adolescents.

In a sample of 53 at-risk pregnant adolescents, the relationship between their perceptions of maternal acceptance-rejection in childhood and the nature of their social supports was examined. Perception of acceptance-rejection was significantly correlated with both frequency of interaction with social network members and expectations of their future support. Implications for public health strategies are discussed.

However, the factors that influence the health of older people in intelligent living environments have not been sufficiently explored. METHODS: Focusing on the three dimensions of health—mental, physical, and social—this study examined the effects of social support, self-efficacy, and intelligent living environments on depression, anxiety, stress, quality of life, and social participation among older adults. Depressive Symptoms, Social Support, and Health-Related Quality of Life of Patients After Lung Transplantation.

BACKGROUND: Lung transplant recipients often experience depressive symptoms that can negatively impact their health-related quality of life (HRQOL). This study examined the relationship between depression and HRQOL, and whether social support mediates this effect. The donors were not from prisoners, or from those individuals who are coerced or paid. The mediation effect was analyzed using the PROCESS model version 4.2. RESULTS: The findings showed that p…

"My friends are better parents than me": Comparison and shaming, social support, and parental burnout.

Parental burnout has gained global attention in recent years due to its effects on family functioning and the well-being of both parents and children. While numerous risk and protective factors have been identified, limited research has examined how group dynamics relate to parental burnout. Our current cross-sectional, cross-cultural study investigated the associations and underlying mechanisms linking perceived social support, parents' personal social comparison, and critical comparison and shaming by family members (CCS) to parental burnout. The sample included 1,373 parents from the United…
