[Reliability of N.M.R. employed in evaluating refrigerating mixtures organic solvents R 22 (Author's transl)].

In a previous work the existence of an hydrogen bond between the difluoromonochloromethane (R 22) and the diethylesters of alpha-omega dicarboxylic acids was pointed out. In the present paper, the influence on absorption of substituents for the hydrogen of the CH2 has been studied in a single compound (diethylmalonate). The results show that electron acceptor substituents obstruct the forming of the hydrogen bond while electron donor substituents improve it.

[Deep eutectic solvents modified reversed-phase liquid chromatography for the separation of natural products].

The composition of natural products is usually very complex. During the separation of natural products, high loading capacity and satisfactory chromatographic resolution are often hardly achieved. To address this limitation, various modifiers were added in the mobile phase to alter the chromatographic behavior. Here, deep eutectic solvents (DESs) were chosen to accomplish this objective on C18 column. Changes in retention factor, overloaded peak shape and adsorption capacity were systematically investigated and interpreted. The application potential of DESs in the separation of natural product…

Comment on "solubility and thermodynamic function of vanillin in ten different environmentally benign solvents".

Shakeel et al. reported the solubility of vanillin in ten environmentally friendly solvents in Food Chemistry [180 (2015) 244-248] and correlated the solubility data using the modified Apelblat model and the Van't Hoff model. While the experimental data are of significant value, we found that the Apelblat model parameters they reported exhibit systematic deviations, indicating incomplete fitting and resulting in poor agreement between the calculated values and experimental values in several solvent systems. In addition, there appear to be inconsistencies in the reported correlation coefficient…

Deep eutectic solvents as emerging carriers for antihyperlipidemic drugs: current trends and future perspectives.

The therapeutic effectiveness of the most antihyperlipidemic drugs, particularly Biopharmaceutics Classification system Class II drugs like statins, is severely limited by their low aqueous solubility and resulting low and variable oral bioavailability (e.g. ∼5% for simvastatin). Deep Eutectic solvents and Therapeutic Deep Eutectic System are explored in this review as an environmentally friendly and innovative next-generation platform designed to overcome these fundamental biopharmaceutical limitations. These systems function as good solubilizers, improving the dissolution rate and the thermo…

Visible light-triggered co-upcycling of polypropylene and polyethylene terephthalate using waste chlorinated solvents.

The chemical incompatibility of mixed plastics poses a fundamental barrier to their circularity. Polypropylene (PP) and polyethylene terephthalate (PET), among the highest-volume manufactured polyolefin and polyester, are particularly difficult to process together due to their divergent structures and stabilities. Here, we demonstrate a synergistic photo-induced strategy that concurrently converts both polymers into valuable products by employing waste chlorinated solvents as a sustainable chlorine radical source. Under visible-light irradiation, chlorine radicals generated in situ from these …

Quaternary Ammonium Salt-Based Deep Eutectic Solvents As Alternative Base Lubricants: Interfacial Tribological Performance.

As functional solvents, deep eutectic solvents (DESs) have been widely applied in various fields. However, their application in the lubrication field remains in an exploratory stage. Existing studies are often limited by directly transplanting formulations from other domains into lubrication without a thorough investigation of formulation design. To address this gap, this study focuses on hydrogen bond acceptor quaternary ammonium salts (QASs) as a research object. By introducing long alkyl chains and dual-long-chain substituents and incorporating the hydrogen bond donor menthol (DL), three no…

From Oilseed Waste to High-Value Bioactives: Deep Eutectic Solvents as Sustainable Refining Media.

The global oil-processing industry generates substantial quantities of by-products and secondary streams, including oilseed cakes, pomaces, hulls, and wastewaters, which remain largely underutilized despite being rich sources of high-value bioactive compounds. The development of sustainable strategies for the valorization of these residues is increasingly recognized as a key component of circular bioeconomy and biorefinery frameworks. In this context, deep eutectic solvents (DESs) have attracted considerable attention as a new generation of designer solvents owing to their tunable physicochemi…

Recent advances in greener alternative solvents for reversed-phase liquid chromatography in pharmaceutical analysis.

Reversed-phase liquid chromatography (RP-LC) is widely used in pharmaceutical analysis, often relying on traditional organic solvents which present significant environmental and health risks. As a result, the growing demand for sustainable analytical practices has led to the development of eco-friendly solvents for RP-LC. This review discusses recent developments in the application of greener alternative solvents, such as ethanol, glycerol, dimethyl carbonate, cyrene, acetone, propylene carbonate, ionic liquids, propylene glycol, deep eutectic solvents, and surfactants, in pharmaceutical analy…

Atomic Charges via Gradient Boosting: Development and Application for Solvation Energies in Organic Solvents.

A gradient-boosting based atomic-charge scheme, BoostCha, is introduced. The BoostCha model operates in three steps: it first predicts pseudo-charges for individual atoms based on their local environments, represented by three-dimensional descriptors of Kocer-Mason-Erturk type, then refines these values using global molecular information, and finally restores the charge conservation. The BoostCha charges are employed as input features in two independent machine-learning models for predicting solvation free energies in organic solvents: ESE-Boost, a gradient-boosting model, and ESE-ANN, a dense…

Scavenger-controlled activation of lignin in microwave-assisted deep eutectic solvents for antioxidant nanoparticles.

Lignin holds promise as a renewable feedstock for functional materials, but its conversion into well-defined nanomaterials is constrained by the heterogeneity of conventional activation. While phenolic scavengers have been employed to suppress undesired recondensation, their role has traditionally been regarded as static. Herein, we report a scavenger- controlled strategy for converting alkali lignin (AL) into antioxidant lignin nanoparticles (LNPs) via microwave‑assisted deep eutectic solvent (DES) treatment combined with in‑situ scavenger addition. The function of ferulic acid (FA) is critic

Mechanism underlying the tolerance of lipase immobilized in porous organic frameworks in organic solvents.

Enzymes represent promising biocatalysts; however, their industrial application is often limited by instability under harsh conditions, particularly their low tolerance to organic solvents. Although immobilization within porous organic frameworks (POFs) offers a potential solution, systematic investigations remain limited. In this work, Aspergillus niger lipase (ANLP) was immobilized in three POFs (ZIF-8, COF-LZU1, and HOF-101), and the tolerance of these composites was evaluated in six common organic solvents, including n-hexane and dichloromethane. The underlying mechanisms governing solvent…

Fluorinated Solvents for Chemoselective Oxidations: A Strategy toward Synthetic Ideality in Natural Product Synthesis.

Late-stage catalytic oxidations of complex natural products have been shown to exhibit dramatically improved chemoselectivity through the crucial use of 1,1,1,3,3,3-hexafluoro-2-propanol (HFIP), even in the presence of oxidatively sensitive groups, such as hydroxyls and diols. This strategy reduced the need for protecting groups, effectively mimicking enzymatic pathways, and substantially enhancing synthetic ideality in the preparation of ent-beyerane and ent-kaurane metabolites.

Noninnocent Deep Eutectic Solvents Enable Selective, Sustainable Nickel-Catalyzed Cross-Electrophile Couplings to Diarylmethanes.

We report the first sustainable nickel-catalyzed cross-electrophile coupling (XEC) between aryl iodides and benzyl chlorides conducted in a deep eutectic solvent (DES), choline chloride/urea (1:2 mol mol-1), replacing the hazardous amide solvents traditionally used in this transformation. The reaction proceeds efficiently under mild (50 °C), aerobic, and heterogeneous conditions, using zinc as the terminal reductant, (dtbbpy)NiBr2 (2 mol%) as catalyst, and MePh3PBr (10 mol%) as additive, delivering a broad range of diarylmethanes in up to 95% yield with wide functional-group tolerance and gram…

Cooperative Supramolecular Polymerization in Both Polar and Non-Polar Solvents via Heteroatom-Driven Amphiphilicity.

Supramolecular polymers in water and non-polar solvents are extensively studied as model systems to mimic biological processes and as functional materials, respectively. The molecular designs to obtain supramolecular polymers in non-polar and polar solvents are typically orthogonal. Here, we disclose a molecular design in which we combine hydrogen-bonding amide units attached to alkyl chains for compatibility with non-polar solvents and heteroatom in the π-conjugated core for interaction with polar solvents, leading to supramolecular polymerization of the same monomeric unit in both non-polar …

Sustainable utilization of cottonseed meal: Integrated protein extraction and detoxification using deep eutectic solvents.

The growing demand for sustainable proteins has highlighted cottonseed meal (CSM) as a promising high-protein byproduct. Addressing the challenge of valorizing the annual global production of over 10 million tons of CSM in cottonseed processing, this study investigated the use of choline chloride-ethylene glycol deep eutectic solvent (DES-4) for efficient protein extraction from CSM while reducing toxic gossypol content. Through Box-Behnken response surface optimization, we established optimal conditions (56 °C/3 h/40% water) that achieved 86.85% protein yield while remarkably reducing bound g

Green extraction and IC analysis of trace impurities in TATB through deep eutectic solvents.

1,3,5-trinamino-2,4,6-trinitrobenzene (TATB) as an important insensitive high explosive has excellent safety performance due to strong hydrogen bonds. Ionic impurities including sulfate ions (SO42-), nitrate ions (NO3-) and chloride ions (Cl-) formed during the preparation of TATB have negative effects on TATB-based explosives. However, strong hydrogen bonds result in extremely low solubility of TATB in traditional solvents, which poses a huge obstacle to extract and detect the impurities in TATB for quality control. In this study, a green extraction method based deep eutectic solvent (CS-1) w…

Streamlined regeneration of cathode materials from spent lithium-ion batteries with deep eutectic solvents.

With the increasing generation of spent lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), there is an urgent need for efficient and environmentally friendly recycling methods. Compared to traditional pyrometallurgical and hydrometallurgical processes, deep eutectic solvents (DESs) offer advantages for recycling valuable metals from spent LIBs, including better biocompatibility and high recovery efficiency. However, complex procedures, long processing times, and solvent regeneration remain challenges. To address these limitations, we propose a streamlined recycling approach using a DES synthesised from guanidine h…
