Replica Exchange Molecular Dynamics: A Practical Application Protocol with Solutions to Common Problems and a Peptide Aggregation and Self-Assembly Example.

Protein aggregation is associated with many human diseases such as Alzheimer's disease (AD), Parkinson's disease (PD), and type II diabetes (T2D). Understanding the molecular mechanism of protein aggregation is essential for therapy development. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations have been shown as powerful tools to study protein aggregation. However, conventional MD simulations can hardly sample the whole conformational space of complex protein systems within acceptable simulation time as it can be easily trapped in local minimum-energy states. Many enhanced sampling methods have been develo

Macroecology of birds potentially susceptible to West Nile virus.

Zoonotic diseases transmitted by wildlife affect biological conservation, public and animal health, and the economy. Current research efforts are aimed at finding wildlife pathogens at a given location. However, a meta-analytical approach may reveal emerging macroecological patterns in the host-pathogen relationship at different temporal and spatial scales. West Nile virus (WNV) is a pathogen with worldwide detrimental impacts on bird populations. To understand macroecological patterns driving WNV infection, we aimed to recognize unknown competent reservoirs using three disease metrics-serolog

The vestibular system: balancing more than just the body.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The review presents a selection of recent studies in the field of vestibular neuroscience, including how vestibular stimulation modulates space and body perception. RECENT FINDINGS: Recent neuroimaging studies identified the operculo-insular/retroinsular cortex as the core vestibular cortex and showed how it is reorganized after vestibular dysfunctions. Subliminal galvanic vestibular stimulation (GVS) induces long-term reduction of hemispatial neglect and improves vertical perception in stroke patients, but the underlying mechanisms remain to be identified. Healthy voluntee

Growth of the nasopharynx and adenoidal development in Brazilian subjects.

The purpose of this research was to study the growth of the nasopharynx and adenoid development. Lateral cephalometric radiographs obtained from 320 white Brazilian subjects between 4 and 16 years of age were used. All the participants were nose breathers and none of them had previously undergone adenoidectomy. Tracings were made from the radiographs and cephalometric measurements were performed. The results showed that adenoid sagital thickness is larger in the age group 4 - 5 years and decreases progressively. There is a slight increase in the age group 10 - 11 years, but afterwards the decr

Negotiation of Individual and Collective Identities in the Online Discourse of Autistic Adults.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have shown an increasing preference for online communication within the autistic advocacy community. Yet, little is known about how online communication facilitates the formation of autistic identity. This qualitative study examined online autobiographical narratives about repetitive and restricted behaviors-specifically "stimming"-produced by autistic adults. The primary goal of this study was to investigate how the production of, and online interactions around, these narratives functioned as collaborative resources for empowered autistic identities. METHODS: Nin

[Thousands of years of human-dog relationship].

During recent years, much progress has been made in understanding the origin and evolution of the dog. Thanks to the collaboration between zooarchaeology, genomics and paleogenetics, researchers were able to hypothesize scenarios regarding the origins of the canine lineages present in Europe at the end of the Pleistocene and the beginning of the Holocene. Research has also shown a correlation between human and canine migration across time and space, highlighting a strong relationship between man and his best friend. This proximity between the two species is also illustrated by the adaptation o

[The transformation of the body and its global implications for COVID care: an inside perspective on healthcare].

This paper is the result of an investigation into the role played by the researcher within ethnographic methodology in clinical settings. Accordingly, it focuses on reflecting on the following question: what role does the researcher's voice play in describing bodily transformations in clinical spaces involving people with severe COVID? Drawing on Kleinman's notion of moral worlds, Turner's notion of liminality, Levinas's ethics of otherness, and Butler's theory of power, the study seeks to develop an in-depth interpretation of the moral, socio-ethical and political dimensions involved. Space-time odd-symmetric Butterfly wave packets with multidimensional modulation properties.

Achieving multidimensional modulation and analysis of breathers in a local nonlinear medium is a highly significant research area. We present what we believe is the first investigation of space-time odd-symmetric Butterfly (STOSB) wave packets in a local nonlinear medium, focusing on their odd-symmetric focus and focal length control. Meanwhile, a completely new modulation method for breathers is proposed that can alter the intensity distribution of breathers in the X-Y plane while leaving the intensity distribution in the X-T and Y-T planes unchanged. Furthermore, both the unique self-healing

Ferroptosis mechanisms in early brain injury after subarachnoid hemorrhage.

Subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) refers to the rupture of intracranial blood vessels, leading to blood entering the subarachnoid space. It is primarily caused by the rupture of intracranial aneurysms and represents a severe acute cerebrovascular disease. Early brain injury (EBI) denotes the pathological changes occurring within 72 h after SAH, including increased intracranial pressure, reduced cerebral blood flow, blood-brain barrier disruption, brain edema, oxidative stress, and neuroinflammation. Ferroptosis is an iron-dependent form of programmed cell death (PCD), and its mechanisms can be sum

Filling the Gaps in PFAS Detection: Integrating GC-MS Non-Targeted Analysis for Comprehensive Environmental Monitoring and Exposure Assessment.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) have garnered increasing attention in recent years and non-targeted analysis (NTA) has become essential for elucidating novel PFAS structures. NTA and PFAS research have been dominated by liquid chromatography - mass spectrometry (LC-MS) with gas chromatography - mass spectrometry (GC-MS) used less often as evidenced by bibliometrics. However, the performance of GC-MS in NTA studies (GC-NTA) rivals that of LC-ESI-MS and GC-MS is shown to cover a complimentary chemical space. An LC-ESI-MS amenability model applied to a list of approximately 12,000 PFAS

Stroke patients' experiences of sharing rooms with dementia patients in a nursing home.

BACKGROUND: The mixed units that place lucid and dementia patients in same rooms have been viewed to benefit the dementia patients. However, many studies report negative attitudes of lucid residents towards mixed units, and there is a scarcity of research which explores the experiences of lucid residents while sharing rooms with the dementia patients in extended care homes. Currently many special care nursing facilities have mixed units in Korea, suggesting a need to examine their effects especially on cognitively lucid patients. OBJECTIVE: To explore lived experiences of stroke patients who

Into the wild: a mixed-methods pilot study of the mental health benefits of a nature summer camp for urban children with psychological needs.

Research suggests that nature promotes psychological and behavioral health among children. However, children living in low-income urban communities often have less access to green spaces compared to their counterparts living in high-income neighborhoods, and limited research has investigated the impact of nature on well-being and social connectedness in children experiencing marginalization. To address this gap, this mixed-methods study examined the impact of a one-week immersive nature camp on the well-being and social connectedness of 27 children aged 6-12 years referred to a community hub i

Improved spatial memory for physical versus virtual navigation.

Objective. Virtual reality (VR) has become a key tool for researching spatial memory. Virtual environments offer many advantages for research in terms of logistics, neuroimaging compatibility etc. However, it is well established in animal models that the lack of physical movement in VR impairs some neural representations of space, and this is considered likely to be true in humans as well. Furthermore, it is unclear how big the disruptive effect stationary navigation is-how much does physical movement during encoding and recall affect human spatial memory and representations of space? What eff

Revisiting Eustachian Tube Anatomy and Physiology.

The Eustachian tube (ET) it is a complex structure connecting the middle ear cavity with the nasopharynx. Its function is to maintain middle ear ventilation to facilitate transmission of sound from the tympanic membrane to the cochlea. It is located medial to the parapharyngeal space. The ET and tympanomastoid cavities form an anatomic and functional unit that cannot easily be divided, and it plays a fundamental role in the etiology of different clinical entities. However, the underlying pathophysiological mechanisms are not yet fully understood, and further research is needed to address the g

Higher Education and Universal Design in Tanzania. A New Model of Inclusion and Sustainable Development.

The need to create a more inclusive society in Tanzania is confronted with a discrepancy between the aims of a regulatory framework, aimed at making Higher Education spaces inclusive, and the question of the right of access to built environments, particularly in universities. The study presents the pilot case of the RUCU's Learning Center for Disabilities to demonstrate that the combination of UDL, architectural accessibility and international cooperation can give impetus to new research and application themes, creating innovative models and good practices to be disseminated for a new shared a

Simulating human space physiology with bed rest.

In a recent review on bed rest studies of the past 20 years, it was concluded that head-down bed rest has proved its usefulness as a reliable simulation model for most physiological effects of spaceflight. Much of this research has been conducted to find countermeasures against the negative effects, which are associated with gravitational unloading. There have been partial successes in the prevention of, for example muscle wasting, cardio-vascular deconditioning, adverse metabolic changes, and bone demineralization. Reviews refer to bone-related measurements of the U.S. and Russian space progr
