Using functional near-infrared spectroscopy to measure prefrontal cortex activity during dual-task walking and navigated walking: A feasibility study.

INTRODUCTION: While functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) can provide insight into motor-cognitive deficits during ecologically valid gait conditions, the feasibility of using fNIRS during complex walking remains unknown. We tested the process and scientific feasibility of using an fNIRS device to measure cortical activity during complex walking tasks consisting of straight walking and navigated walking under single and dual-task (DT) conditions. METHODS: Nineteen healthy people from 18 to 64 years (mean age: 45.7 years) participated in this study which consisted of three complex walk

Using Cognitive-Motor Dual-Tasks and Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy to Characterize Older Adults with and without Subjective Cognitive Decline.

BACKGROUND: Subjective cognitive decline (SCD) refers to individuals who report persistent cognitive deficits but perform normally on neuropsychological tests. Performance may be facilitated by increased prefrontal cortex activation, known as neural compensation, and could be used to differentiate between older adults with and without SCD. OBJECTIVE: This cross-sectional pilot study measured changes in the hemodynamic response (ΔHbO2) using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) as well as cognitive and motor performance during fine and gross motor dual-tasks in older adults with and w

Modulating Cortical Hemodynamic Activity in Parkinson's Disease Using Focal Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation: A Pilot Functional Near-infrared Spectroscopy Study.

Reduced thalamocortical facilitation of the motor cortex in PD leads to characteristic motor deficits such as bradykinesia. Recent research has highlighted improved motor function following tDCS, but a lack of neurophysiological evidence limits the progress of tDCS as an adjunctive therapy. Here, we tested the hypothesis that tDCS may modulate M1 hemodynamic activity in PD and healthy using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). In this randomized crossover experiment, fourteen PD and twelve healthy control participants attended three laboratory sessions and performed a regulated (3 Hz

Coupled versus decoupled visuomotor feedback: Differential frontoparietal activity during curved reach planning on simultaneous functional near-infrared spectroscopy and electroencephalography.

INTRODUCTION: Interacting with the environment requires the planning and execution of reach-to-target movements along given reach trajectory paths. Human neural mechanisms for the motor planning of linear, or point-to-point, reaching movements are relatively well studied. However, the corresponding representations for curved and more complex reaching movements require further investigation. Additionally, the visual and proprioceptive feedback of hand positioning can be spatially and sequentially coupled in alignment (e.g., directly reaching for an object), termed coupled visuomotor feedback, o

Impaired brain activity in patients with persistent atrial fibrillation assessed by near-infrared spectroscopy and its changes after catheter ablation.

Although the prevalence of cognitive impairment and depression is higher in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) than in the general population, the mechanism has not been fully examined and impact of catheter ablation (CA) of AF also remains unclear. Recently, the development of near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) has enabled noninvasive measurements of regional cerebral blood volume and brain activity, in terms of cerebral oxyhemoglobin in the cerebral cortex. We assessed brain activities by NIRS, depressive symptoms by the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D) and cognit

Near-Infrared Spectroscopy-Guided Hyperventilation for Transient Intracranial Pressure Control during Anesthesia Induction in a Patient with Impending Uncal Herniation.

Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) is known to determine the adequacy of regional cerebral oxygen supply. NIRS values during anesthetic induction depends upon various factors such as anesthetic agents, inspired oxygen fraction, blood carbon dioxide levels and systemic blood pressure. Also high intracranial pressure (ICP) can lead to reduced NIRS values, secondary to increased cerebral vascular resistance induced decrease in cerebral blood flow. However optimal hyperventilation instituted as a bridge to definitive ICP management is difficult to ascertain as hypocapnia due to poorly titrated hype

The Benefit of Cross-Modal Reorganization on Speech Perception in Pediatric Cochlear Implant Recipients Revealed Using Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy.

Cochlear implants (CIs) are the most successful treatment for severe-to-profound deafness in children. However, speech outcomes with a CI often lag behind those of normally-hearing children. Some authors have attributed these deficits to the takeover of the auditory temporal cortex by vision following deafness, which has prompted some clinicians to discourage the rehabilitation of pediatric CI recipients using visual speech. We studied this cross-modal activity in the temporal cortex, along with responses to auditory speech and non-speech stimuli, in experienced CI users and normally-hearing c

Limb linkage rehabilitation training-related changes in cortical activation and effective connectivity after stroke: A functional near-infrared spectroscopy study.

Stroke remains the leading cause of long-term disability worldwide. Rehabilitation training is essential for motor function recovery following stroke. Specifically, limb linkage rehabilitation training can stimulate motor function in the upper and lower limbs simultaneously. This study aimed to investigate limb linkage rehabilitation task-related changes in cortical activation and effective connectivity (EC) within a functional brain network after stroke by using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) imaging. Thirteen stroke patients with either left hemiparesis (L-H group, n = 6) and

Predicting bioavailability change of complex chemical mixtures in contaminated soils using visible and near-infrared spectroscopy and random forest regression.

A number of studies have shown that visible and near infrared spectroscopy (VIS-NIRS) offers a rapid on-site measurement tool for the determination of total contaminant concentration of petroleum hydrocarbons compounds (PHC), heavy metals and metalloids (HM) in soil. However none of them have yet assessed the feasibility of using VIS-NIRS coupled to random forest (RF) regression for determining both the total and bioavailable concentrations of complex chemical mixtures. Results showed that the predictions of the total concentrations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), PHC, and alkanes (

Determination of zinc oxide content of mineral medicine calamine using near-infrared spectroscopy based on MIV and BP-ANN algorithm.

Near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy has been widely used in the analysis fields of traditional Chinese medicine. It has the advantages of fast analysis, no damage to samples and no pollution. In this research, a fast quantitative model for zinc oxide (ZnO) content in mineral medicine calamine was explored based on NIR spectroscopy. NIR spectra of 57 batches of calamine samples were collected and the first derivative (FD) method was adopted for conducting spectral pretreatment. The content of ZnO in calamine sample was determined using ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) titration and taken as

Forearm deoxyhemoglobin and deoxymyoglobin (deoxy[Hb + Mb]) measured by near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) using a handgrip test in mitochondrial myopathy.

The purpose of this paper is to test whether peripheral oxygenation responses measured with near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) would differ between patients suffering from mitochondrial myopathy (MM) and healthy controls during an incremental handgrip exercise test. Two groups of subjects were studied: 11 patients with MM and 11 age- and gender-matched untrained healthy controls. A handgrip exercise until exhaustion protocol was used consisting of 2 min periods of work (½ Hz) at different intensities, separated by a 60 s rest period. The changes in deoxyhemoglobin and deoxymyoglobin (deoxy[Hb +

Near-infrared spectroscopy versus magnetic resonance imaging to study brain perfusion in newborns with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy treated with hypothermia.

BACKGROUND: The measurement of brain perfusion may provide valuable information for assessment and treatment of newborns with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE). While arterial spin labeled perfusion (ASL) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) provides noninvasive and direct measurements of regional cerebral blood flow (CBF) values, it is logistically challenging to obtain. Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) might be an alternative, as it permits noninvasive and continuous monitoring of cerebral hemodynamics and oxygenation at the bedside. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study is to determine the

Increased left prefrontal activation during staring/mutism episodes in a patient with resistant catatonic schizophrenia: a near infrared spectroscopy study.

OBJECTIVE: To present the first near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) study of a patient with resistant catatonic schizophrenia during residual episodes of catatonia-related symptoms. BACKGROUND: Functional imaging studies generally point to a decreased cortical activation in catatonic patients, with the notable exception of increased orbitofrontal/medial prefrontal activity elicited by negative stimuli. METHODS: Cortical activity of the left anterior prefrontal area was recorded with a Techen 4 x 4 NIRS apparatus. Four episodes of staring/mutism were recorded and averaged. Compared with normal

Early occurrence of respiratory muscle deoxygenation assessed by near-infrared spectroscopy during leg exercise in patients with chronic heart failure.

The mechanisms of respiratory muscle deoxygenation during incremental leg exercise with expired gas analysis were investigated in 29 patients with chronic heart failure and 21 normal subjects. The deoxygenation and blood volume of the respiratory muscle and exercising leg muscle were assessed by near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS). To evaluate the influence of the leg exercise on the blood volume of the respiratory muscle, 10 normal subjects also underwent a hyperventilation test with NIRS. The respiratory muscle deoxygenation point (RDP), at which oxygenated hemoglobin starts to decrease, was o

Near-infrared spectroscopy-based parallel assessment of soybean fungal contamination and protein content using an adaptive-threshold Monte Carlo UVE strategy.

Soybean protein content and fungal contamination level are critical determinants of economic value and consumption safety. However, conventional analytical methods rely on destructive chemical analyses or single-parameter measurements, severely limiting assessment efficiency and multi-attribute evaluation. Although near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) is widely used, it frequently suffers from spectral redundancy, model instability, and limited generalization in complex agricultural matrices. To address these challenges, this study proposes a parallel NIR analytical framework driven by Ensemble M

Cross-batch calibration of sugarcane disease classification models based on visible and near-infrared spectroscopy using deep learning-based domain adaptation.

Visible-near infrared (Vis-NIR) spectroscopy provides rapid crop disease assessment; however, poor model generalizability remains a major limitation when models developed for a specific period are applied to batches collected at different times, primarily due to variations in physicochemical properties such as chlorophyll content, moisture level, surface texture, and tissue structure, which induce shifts in spectral distributions across batches. This study investigates deep domain adaptation to enhance cross-batch transferability for sugarcane disease classification. Two batches of healthy and

Hybrid interferometric near infrared spectroscopy (hybrid iNIRS) enables time-of-flight-resolved non-invasive blood flow monitoring in humans in vivo.

Interferometric near-infrared spectroscopy (iNIRS) uniquely offers time-of-flight (TOF) resolution for depth-resolved optical property and blood-flow assessment in tissue, but single-mode collection constrains photon throughput and single-channel implementations impose stringent analogue bandwidth and digitization rates to resolve both TOF and speckle dynamics. Conversely, continuous-wave parallel interferometric NIRS (CW-πNIRS) boosts photon detection via spatial multiplexing on camera sensors, yet sacrifices TOF information and remains limited by camera readout. Here we reconcile these trade
