The logopenic variant of Primary Progressive Aphasia (lvPPA), a syndromic disorder centered on language impairment, often presents variable underlying neurodegenerative pathologies such as Alzheimer Disease (AD). Actual language assessment tests and lumbar puncture, focused on AD diagnosis, cannot precisely distinguish the symptoms, or predict their progression at onset time. We analyzed acoustic markers, aiming to discriminate lvPPA and AD as well as the influence of AD biomarkers on acoustic profiles at the beginning of the disease. We recruited people with AD (n = 8) and with lvPPA (n = 8),

OBJECTIVE: This study was undertaken to gain insights into structural networks associated with stimulation-induced dysarthria (SID) and to predict stimulation-induced worsening of intelligibility in essential tremor patients with bilateral thalamic deep brain stimulation (DBS).
METHODS: Monopolar reviews were conducted in 14 essential tremor patients. Testing included determination of SID thresholds, intelligibility ratings, and a fast syllable repetition task. Volumes of tissue activated (VTAs) were calculated to identify discriminative fibers for stimulation-induced worsening of intelligibi

OBJECTIVE: To use functional magnetic resonance imaging to map the auditory cortical fields that are activated, or nonreactive, to sounds in patient M.L., who has auditory agnosia caused by trauma to the inferior colliculi.
BACKGROUND: The patient cannot recognize speech or environmental sounds. Her discrimination is greatly facilitated by context and visibility of the speaker's facial movements, and under forced-choice testing. Her auditory temporal resolution is severely compromised. Her discrimination is more impaired for words differing in voice onset time than place of articulation. Word

CONCLUSION: This preliminary study demonstrates the development of hearing ability and shows that there is a significant improvement in some cognitive parameters related to selective visual/spatial attention and to fluid or multisensory reasoning, in children fitted with auditory brainstem implantation (ABI). The improvement in cognitive paramenters is due to several factors, among which there is certainly, as demonstrated in the literature on a cochlear implants (CIs), the activation of the auditory sensory canal, which was previously absent. The findings of the present study indicate that ch

We used magnetoencephalography to elucidate the cortical activation associated with the segmentation of spoken words in nonreading-impaired and dyslexic adults. The subjects listened to binaurally presented sentences where the sentence-ending words were either semantically appropriate or inappropriate to the preceding sentence context. Half of the inappropriate final words shared two or three initial phonemes with the highly expected semantically appropriate words. Two temporally and functionally distinct response patterns were detected in the superior temporal lobe. The first response peaked

OBJECTIVE: We characterised the clinical and neuro-otological characteristics of patients with Susac syndrome.
METHODS: The medical records of 30 patients with Susac syndrome were reviewed for details of their clinical presentation and course, neuro-otological symptoms, investigation results including audiology and vestibular function tests, treatment and outcomes.
RESULTS: Our findings demonstrate that 29 of our 30 patients with Susac syndrome developed neuro-otological symptoms such as hearing loss, disequilibrium, tinnitus or vertigo during their disease course. Hearing loss was the most

APD is not a label for a unitary disease entity but rather a description of functional deficits [3]. It is a complex and heterogeneous group of auditory-specific disorders usually associated with a range of listening and learning deficits [3,4]. Underlying APD is a deficit observed in one or more of the auditory processes responsible for generating the auditory evoked potentials and the following behaviors: around localization and lateralization; auditory discrimination; auditory pattern recognition; temporal aspects of audition, including temporal resolution, masking, integration, and orderin

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the audiological characteristics of vestibular schwannoma (VS) patients with normal pure-tone audiometry (PTA) results.
STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective study.
SETTING: Forty-two VS patients with normal PTA results from October 2016 to October 2022 were included.
METHODS: Normal PTA was defined when the hearing threshold is ≤25 dB hearing loss (HL) in each test frequency and the PTA is ≤25 dB HL. Results of multiple audiological tests such as the auditory brainstem response (ABR), distortion product otoacoustic emission (DPOAE), multiple auditory steady-state response

PURPOSE: Patients suffering from Ménière's disease (MD) experience vertigo, and impairments in hearing and quality of life (QoL). This study aims to investigate the impact of cochlear implantation (CI) on various aspects affecting patients with MD.
METHODS: A single tertiary centre's CI database for CI recipients with MD between 2014 and 2022 was screened retrospectively. Hearing, vertigo, tinnitus symptoms, and hearing-related QoL were assessed. Pre- and postoperative hearing tests in conjunction with subjective outcome measures by visual analogue scale (VAS) and validated tools such as the

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the hearing results after surgery for T1 and T2 vestibular schwannomas (VS) via the middle cranial fossa (MCF) approach at one institution and to review outcomes in the recent literature.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: In our department, 208 consecutive patients have undergone surgery using the MCF approach between December 2005 and February 2015. Audiological testing included pure-tone audiometry, speech-discrimination-tests pre- and postoperatively, as well as a pre- and intraoperative brainstem evoked response audiometry (BERA). Parkinson's Disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder that causes motor and cognitive impairments, affecting approximately 1% of individuals over 60 years of age. Speech impairments are among the earliest and most accessible biomarkers, making voice-based assessment a promising avenue for remote PD monitoring. However, existing speech-based PD prediction methods suffer from feature redundancy that degrades model performance, non-Gaussian data distributions that violate model assumptions, and limited systematic feature grouping strategies. This study introduces an adaptive approa

Cochlear implants (CIs) convey the amplitude envelope of speech by modulating high-rate pulse trains. However, not all of the envelope may be necessary to perceive amplitude modulations (AMs); the effective envelope depth may be limited by forward and backward masking from the envelope peaks. Three experiments used modulated pulse trains to measure which portions of the envelope can be effectively processed by CI users as a function of AM frequency. Experiment 1 used a three-interval forced-choice task to test the ability of CI users to discriminate less-modulated pulse trains from a fully mod

BACKGROUND: Auditory neuropathy is a disorder characterised by preservation of outer hair cells function with normal otoacoustic emissions (OAEs), but with absent auditory brainstem responses (ABR). Perisynaptic synchronisation disorder is one of the possible pathogenesis underlying auditory neuropathy. In this paper we describe the clinical presentation and audiological findings in pediatric auditory neuropathy and its management.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: 9 children with auditory neuropathy could be included in the study. An audiological evaluation was performed in all children including behavi

Salla disease, a free sialic acid storage disorder, is one of the 36 currently known disorders in Finland that form the Finnish disease heritage. Salla disease leads to learning disability* with a wide clinical variation. Two main categories of the disease have been classified: a conventional subtype and a severe subtype with more severe defects. We present detailed neurocognitive profiles of 41 Finnish patients with Salla disease (19 females, 22 males; age range 11mo to 63y, median 19y). The neurocognitive development of patients with Salla disease was assessed by psychological and neuropsych

IMPORTANCE: The COVID-19 pandemic has brought forth new challenges for health care workers, such as the daily use of personal protective equipment, including reusable facial respirators. Poor communication while wearing respirators may have fatal complications for patients, and no solution has been proposed to date.
OBJECTIVE: To examine whether use of an in-ear communication device is associated with improved communication while wearing different personal protective equipment (N95 mask, half-face elastomeric respirator, and powered air-purifying respirator [PAPR]) in the operating room.
