Entrainment echoes in the cerebellum.

Evidence accumulates that the cerebellum's role in the brain is not restricted to motor functions. Rather, cerebellar activity seems to be crucial for a variety of tasks that rely on precise event timing and prediction. Due to its complex structure and importance in communication, human speech requires a particularly precise and predictive coordination of neural processes to be successfully comprehended. Recent studies proposed that the cerebellum is indeed a major contributor to speech processing, but how this contribution is achieved mechanistically remains poorly understood. The current stu

The effects of behind-the-ear and off-the-ear sound processors on speech understanding performance in cochlear implant users.

OBJECTIVE: The first aim of this study was to compare speech understanding performance in adult cochlear implant users using behind-the-ear … uite between the two processors (p > 0.05). Statistically significant differences were not seen for speech intelligibility in five spatial settings in the Turkish Matrix Test (p > 0.05). CONCLUSION: Although both types of sound processors had different microphone locations, the outcomes were found to be consistent with previous results in adult users off-the-ear sound …

Electrolarynx in voice rehabilitation.

OBJECTIVE: Patients of laryngeal cancer who have undergone the surgical removal of the entire larynx suffer the loss of phonation. Electrolarynx (EL) speech is the most commonly adopted alaryngeal phonation. However, EL speech is notorious of the sound quality being monotonic and robotic with the lack of pitch control and the presence of the radiated noise. This paper provides a review of modalities in EL speech as well as introducing the technologies to control the pitch and reduce the noise of the device. METHODS: Improvements of EL speech quality have been divided into two parts: improving

Amplitude rise time sensitivity in children with and without dyslexia: differential task effects and longitudinal relations to phonology and literacy.

The speech amplitude envelope carries important acoustic information required for speech intelligibility and contains sensory cues (amplitude rise times, ARTs) that play a key role in both sensory rhythm perception and neural speech encoding. Individual differences in children's sensitivity to ARTs have been related to the development of children's phonological processing skills across languages by the Temporal Sampling theory. Impaired processing of ARTs also characterises children with dyslexia. However, different ART tasks have been employed in different studies, in different languages, and…

Long-Term Average Spectral (LTAS) Measures of Dysarthria and Their Relationship to Perceived Severity.

This study investigated the relationship between measures of Long-Term Average Spectrum (LTAS) for speakers with Parkinson's disease (PD) and Multiple Sclerosis (MS) and scaled estimates of perceived speech severity. Perceived severity was operationally defined as listeners' overall impression of voice, resonance, articulatory precision, and prosody without regard to intelligibility. Healthy control talkers were also studied. Speakers were audio recorded while reading Harvard Sentences and the Grandfather Passage. Using TF32 (Milenkovic, 2005), the LTAS was computed for sentences. Coefficients

Mandarin Electrolaryngeal Speech Recognition Based on WaveNet-CTC.

Purpose The application of Chinese Mandarin electrolaryngeal (EL) speech for laryngectomees has been limited by its drawbacks such as single fundamental frequency, mechanical sound, and large radiation noise. To improve the intelligibility of Chinese Mandarin EL speech, a new perspective using the automatic speech recognition (ASR) system was proposed, which can convert EL speech into healthy speech, if combined with text-to-speech. Method An ASR system was designed to recognize EL speech based on a deep learning model WaveNet and the connectionist temporal classification (WaveNet-CTC). This s

Speech therapy in adolescents with Down syndrome: In pursuit of communication as a fundamental human right.

PURPOSE: The achievement of speech intelligibility by persons with Down syndrome facilitates their participation in society. Denial of speech therapy services by virtue of low cognitive skills is a violation of their fundamental human rights as proclaimed in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in general and in Article 19 in particular. Here, we describe the differential response of an adolescent with Down syndrome to three speech therapy interventions and demonstrate the use of a single subject randomisation design to identify effective treatments for children with complex communication…

Binaural cue characterization in cochlear implants: Impact of signal processing and interaural linked channel selection.

Bilateral cochlear implantation is a primary clinical intervention to re-establish access to binaural hearing in individuals with severe-to- … of linked channel selection and number of maxima is also investigated on binaural cue encoding and speech intelligibility in noise. Non-linear compressions emerge as the dominant source of interaural level distortion, introducing errors up to 10.4 ± 0.5 dB. While envelope extraction and channel selection are the primary contributors to interaural timing degradation, wi …

A novel fixed-target task to determine articulatory speed constraints in persons with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

PURPOSE: The goal of this study was to determine if talkers with ALS are limited in their ability to increase lower lip and jaw speed at an early stage of the disease when their speaking rate and intelligibility are only minimally or not affected. METHOD: A novel metronome paced fixed-target task was used to assess movement speed capacities during lower lip and jaw oscillations in seven talkers with ALS and seven age and gender matched controls. RESULTS: Lower lip peak speeds were significantly lower in talkers with mild ALS than in healthy talkers suggesting a lower lip speed constraint in

Patient-Reported Speech Outcomes in Patients with Beckwith-Wiedemann Syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Macroglossia is a hallmark feature of Beckwith-Wiedemann Syndrome (BWS) and may affect a child's appearance, speech, and feeding. Tongue reduction surgery (TRS) is often recommended to address functional concerns, but its effects on patient-reported speech outcomes remain unclear. This study evaluates self-reported speech outcomes in individuals with BWS. METHODS: Patients with BWS (aged 4-18 years) were prospectively administered the FACE-Q Craniofacial measures (speech distress, breathing, eating and drinking, facial function, speech function). Surveys were Rasch transformed sco

Language and communication development in Down syndrome.

Although there is considerable variability, most individuals with Down syndrome have mental retardation and speech and language deficits, particularly in language production and syntax and poor speech intelligibility. This article describes research findings in the language and communication development of individuals with Down syndrome, first briefly describing the physical and cognitive phenotype of Down syndrome, and two communication related domains-hearing and oral motor skills. Next, we describe language development in Down syndrome, focusing on communication behaviors in the prelinguist…
