Correlation between focal lesion sites and language deficits in the acute phase of post-stroke aphasia.

INTRODUCTION: Focal lesion sites can predict the language function of patients with aphasia during the subacute or chronic phases. However, the relationship between focal lesion sites and language deficits in the acute phase remains unclear. Therefore, our study aimed to investigate the relationship between focal lesion sites and fluency, auditory comprehension, repetition and naming deficits in patients with acute aphasia to further understand the pathophysiological mechanism of aphasia. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We included a total of 52 patients with acute aphasia who had their first-ever stro

The cut-off analysis using visual analogue scale and cepstral assessments on severity of voice disorder.

Purpose: The aims of this study were to: (1) determine the visual analogue scale (VAS) and cepstrum peak prominence (CPP) cut-off points on the ratings of numerical scale (NS) related to the severity of voice disorder ratings and (2) verify the discriminative power of these cut-off points for distinguishing between different severities of voice disorder. Methods: Auditory-perceptual severity assessments (VAS and four-point NS) of 214 voice samples were performed by three speech-language pathologists and CPP parameters were used for the acoustic analysis. Both VAS and CPP cut-off points were ob

South African speech-language therapists' views on dysphagia in head and neck cancer patients.

BACKGROUND: A significant gap in literature exists regarding speech-language therapists' (SLTs') guidelines for swallowing management in patients with head and neck cancer (HNC), particularly in low- and middle-income countries like South Africa. OBJECTIVES: This study explored a sample of South African SLTs' views of swallowing management in patients with HNC. METHOD: A custom-designed online questionnaire was shared on social media platforms and completed by 14 South African SLTs with experience in swallowing management of patients with HNC. Quantitative data were analysed using descriptiv

Assessment of prelinguistic vocalizations in real time: a comparison with phonetic transcription and assessment of inter-coder-reliability.

This study investigated reliability of naturalistic listening in real time (NLRT) compared to phonetic transcription. Speech pathology students with brief training in NLRT assessed prelinguistic syllable inventory size and specific syllable types in typically developing infants. A second study also examined inter-coder reliability for canonical babbling, canonical babbling ratio and presence of oral stops in syllable inventory of infants with cleft palate, by means of NLRT. In study 1, ten students independently assessed prelinguistic samples of five 12-month-old typically developing infants u

A Pediatrician's Guide to Communication Disorders Secondary to Cleft Lip/Palate.

This article describes how different types of clefts affect the child's function and, in particular, the child's communication abilities. This article also describes the evaluation process and various options for the treatment of affected speech. Because these children have many complicated needs over their entire growth period, it is important that they are referred by the pediatrician to a cleft palate/craniofacial team for the best care and best ultimate outcomes.

Speech pathology for chronic cough: a new approach.

Chronic cough may persist despite systematic evaluation and medical treatment of known associated diseases such as asthma, rhinitis, and gastro-esophageal reflux. These patients have refractory chronic cough and many exhibit laryngeal hypersensitivity that is manifest at both a sensory and motor level. Examples of this are heightened sensitivity of the cough reflex to capsaicin, and laryngeal motor dysfunction with hoarse vocal quality and paradoxical vocal cord movement. Chronic cough that persists despite medical treatment may respond to speech pathology intervention. A multidimensional spee

The cognitive competence of speakers with acquired dysarthria: judgements by doctors and speech and language therapists.

BACKGROUND: Studies have shown that listeners make negative attributions towards people with communication impairments. This appears to be the case for health care professionals as well as non-professional listeners. AIMS: This study extends this line of research to speakers with acquired dysarthria. These clients often complain that listeners treat them differently after the onset of their speech impairment. The study examines judgements of the cognitive status of speakers with acquired dysarthria made by health care professionals. METHODS AND PROCEDURES: Doctors, speech and language therap

An automatic measure for speech intelligibility in dysarthrias-validation across multiple languages and neurological disorders.

INTRODUCTION: Dysarthria, a motor speech disorder caused by muscle weakness or paralysis, severely impacts speech intelligibility and quality of life. The condition is prevalent in motor speech disorders such as Parkinson's disease (PD), atypical parkinsonism such as progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP), Huntington's disease (HD), and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Improving intelligibility is not only an outcome that matters to patients but can also play a critical role as an endpoint in clinical research and drug development. This study validates a digital measure for speech intelligib

Diagnosis and treatment of speech disorders in children with Moebius syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Moebius syndrome (MS) is characterized by congenital bilateral paralysis of the facial and abducens nerves. Clinical features include feeding problems, dysarthria, dysphagia, sialorrhea, strabismus, and lack of facial expression. Patients with MS frequently present with dysphagia during infancy. Further on during childhood a severe speech disorder is a common feature. However, articulation deficits in patients with MS are scarcely reported in the related scientific literature. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to describe speech deviations, intelligibility and sialorrhea in pati

Addressing Cleft Care in Low- and Middle-Income Countries Beyond Cleft Lip and Palate with Improvement of Otolaryngology, Audiology, and Speech Services.

There are many barriers patients and families face in low- and middleincome countries (LMICs) to just receive the initial surgical care for their cleft lip and palate (CLP). Cleft lip/palate care encompasses much more than just the initial primary repairs, especially in the realm of otolaryngology, audiologic health, and speech language pathology. LMICs face many disparities in training and surgical care for secondary cleft surgeries, and addressing these disparities and creating solutions is paramount for the future of CLP patients globally. This editorial aims to highlight these disparities

Disruptions in speech, language and social communication in lysosomal storage diseases.

Communication enables social connection, autonomy and identity, making it a fundamental domain of human functioning. In lysosomal storage diseases (LSDs), progressive neurological dysfunction can severely disrupt speech, language and social communication, resulting in profound isolation and reduced quality of life. LSDs are a heterogeneous group of more than 70 inherited metabolic disorders caused by lysosomal dysfunction and substrate accumulation, leading to severe neurological consequences and multisystem pathology. LSDs are classified according to the biochemical nature of the accumulating
