We present a case of a 52-year old female patient with intermittent gastrointestinal bleeding and iron deficiency anaemia. Repeated endoscopic investigation revealed no diagnosis, but contrast-enhanced computed tomography showed a splenic artery pseudo-aneurysm secondary to chronic alcoholic pancreatitis. A distal pancreatectomy and splenectomy was performed. Hemosuccus pancreaticus is an uncommon cause of gastrointestinal bleeding, most frequently associated with chronic pancreatitis. Erosion of a peripancreatic artery by a pseudocyst can cause a pseudoaneurysm and rupture occurs in up to 10%

BACKGROUND: Primary splenic angiosarcoma (PSA) is an exceedingly rare and aggressive malignancy with a poor prognosis. This report aims to present a rare case of PSA that progressed to fatal hepatic rupture due to rapid metastatic spread following splenectomy and adjuvant therapy; a review of the relevant literature is also provided to discuss the diagnostic and therapeutic challenges associated with this condition.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 52-year-old male patient presented with acute abdominal pain and hypovolemic shock. Imaging revealed splenic rupture with hemoperitoneum. An emergency splenec…

BACKGROUND: Atraumatic splenic rupture (ASR) is rare and typically attributed to underlying pathological conditions, with neoplastic diseases being the main etiologies. Traditionally, surgical intervention has been the standard approach for managing ASR in the majority of patients. However, reports on the outcomes of conservative management, especially for ASR related to myeloid neoplasms, are scarce.
CASE DESCRIPTION: Here, we present two case reports involving ASR associated with myeloid neoplasms. The first patient, suffering from chronic myelomonocytic leukemia (CMML) harboring CBL and AS…

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effectiveness and safety of low molecular weight heparin combined with aspirin for perioperative prophylactic anticoagulation in patients with lower extremity fracture after splenectomy.
METHODS: The clinical data of 50 patients with splenic rupture combined with lower extremity fracture between January 2009 and June 2022 were retrospectively analyzed. All patients were given enoxaparin sodium at 48 hours after splenectomy, and stopped at 24 hours before fracture surgery. After fracture surgery, the patients were divided into aspirin group (group A, 15 cases), lo…

We describe the case of a worker professionally exposed to low environmental temperatures who presented anaemia with abdominal pain in apparent succession to a thoraco-abdominal trauma following a car accident. A laparotomy, carried out because of suspected post-traumatic spleen rupture, was complicated by a transitory cardiorespiratory arrest. Subsequently, the patient resulted to be suffering from acute cold agglutinin disease secondary to Mycoplasma pneumoniae infection and from a precedently undiagnosed hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. The temporary removal of the patient from his job contribu

A ruptured splenic artery aneurysm (SAA) is a life-threatening condition requiring urgent endovascular isolation. However, antegrade access can be challenging due to severe tortuosity or anatomical changes post-gastrectomy. An 80-year-old woman presented with a ruptured 45 mm pseudoaneurysm originating from a SAA five days after femoral fracture surgery. Initial antegrade access failed because of a narrowed and tortuous entry to the distal artery. We performed a retrograde trans-collateral approach via the transverse pancreatic artery. A triple co-axial system was used, featuring a 2.9-Fr stee

Splenomegaly is the most common phenotype for Niemann-Pick disease type B (NPD-B), an autosomal recessive lipid storage disease caused by deficiency of the lysosomal enzyme acid sphingomyelinase. Although a spleen of massive volume is common in NPD-B, splenic rupture in this disease is rarely reported. We describe a patient with NPD-B who initially presented with spontaneous splenic rupture. Microscopic examination of the spleen specimen revealed expansion of the red pulp by abundant foamy histiocytes. A literature review revealed that splenic rupture resulting from latent splenomegaly may occ…

A case of sudden death in a 45-year-old man due to splenic artery dissection and rupture diagnosed at a medico-legal autopsy is described. The examination of the splenic artery revealed macroscopically the features of a ruptured intramural haematoma (no intimal tear, no lumen dilation) and histologically the characteristics of a lymphoplasmacytic vasculitis of the vasa vasorum associated with fibrinoid degeneration. The patient died at home after having been discharged from hospital where he had presented for modest abdominal pain with no evidence of the true nature of the disease found using

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: A diaphragmatic rupture is an uncommon injury resulting from blunt abdominal trauma, and it rarely occurs alongside a splenic injury. Its diagnosis can even be difficult with advanced imaging; Complications from diaphragmatic rupture are severe and may even lead to death. A timely diagnosis can be life-saving.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case involving a 28-year-old male diagnosed with a diaphragmatic injury resulting from blunt abdominal trauma. A laparotomy was performed due to the deterioration of the patient's condition, which revealed an associated grade t

AIM: While most splenic ruptures manifest as immediate hemorrhage, a minority of patients experience delayed rupture, which occurs days to weeks after the initial trauma. Although there have been reports of delayed splenic rupture following trauma, the exact pathophysiology of this condition and the appropriate treatment remain contentious. This article aims to further discuss and summarize the diagnosis and treatment protocols for delayed traumatic rupture of the spleen through the collection and analysis of existing clinical data, combined with previous literature.
CASE PRESENTATION: From 2…

INTRODUCTION: Delayed splenic rupture is an often unpredictable event with high mortality. In this report, we discuss the successful management of delayed splenic rupture, presenting days after index injury, with no commonly associated injuries or blunt abdominal trauma.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 50 year old male, not on anticoagulants, presented with blunt trauma after driving his motorcycle into a tree. The patient sustained right 3-5 rib fractures, displaced right midclavicular fracture, 25 % right pneumothorax, T5-9 posterior spinous process fractures, left 2nd-5th metatarsal fractures, and sc…

Granulocyte-colony stimulating factors (G-CSFs) are the cornerstone of peripheral blood stem cell mobilization and apheresis. However, splenic rupture following G-CSF treatment represents a serious and potentially fatal adverse event. Here, we report the case of a patient in their late 50s with severe pancytopenia post-autologous stem cell transplantation reinfusion suffering from splenic rupture after treatment with lenograstim. We also reviewed the literature describing cases of splenic rupture during G-CSF administration.

BACKGROUND: There is currently no information on the anatomical risk factors for splenic artery aneurysm rupture, specifically the location or size of the lesion; therefore, reporting this entity to obtain data and ultimately reduce morbidity and mortality is essential. Here we report a case of a male patient with spontaneous rupture of a large splenic artery aneurysm presenting with abdominal pain.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 59-year middle-eastern male, with known pemphigus vulgaris presented with a chief complaint of headache and syncope, followed by abdominal pain along with severe metabolic aci

We successfully managed a splenic injury and delayed splenic rupture in a patient with an implantable left ventricular assist device (iLVAD). A 42-year-old man with an iLVAD for idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy was admitted to our department complaining of dizziness. Laboratory data showed severe anemia, and computed tomography demonstrated a traumatic splenic injury. Following conservative treatment, partial splenic embolization was performed. Fifteen days after the intervention, the patient went into hemorrhagic shock due to delayed splenic rupture. Emergency total splenic embolization was …
