Seasonality of sporotrichosis in Brazil: A modelled analysis of the epidemic in São Paulo, 2011-2020.

BACKGROUND: Sporotrichosis is an endemic subcutaneous mycosis classically caused by the Sporothrix schenckii species complex. Recently, sporotrichosis has emerged in Brazil as a cat-transmitted epidemic caused by a new species, Sporothrix brasiliensis. OBJECTIVES: To survey the clinical-epidemiological profile of all sporotrichosis cases diagnosed between 2011 and 2020 at a reference hospital in São Paulo metropolitan area and evaluate the annual distribution of cases in relation to seasonality. METHODS: Patients' demographic and clinical-epidemiological data were surveyed. A generalized lin…

Infant sporotrichosis in northeast China: a report of 15 cases.

BACKGROUND: Sporotrichosis is a deep mycosis caused by Sporothrix schenckii. It is not uncommon in adults and children but is very rare in infants. METHODS: We collated a series of case reports. Clinical data and laboratory and therapeutic results in 15 infants with cutaneous sporotrichosis were analyzed. RESULTS: A total of 15 cases of sporotrichosis in infants aged <10 months (mean age: 5.2 months; 10 male, five female) were diagnosed at the Department of Dermatology and Venereology, First Hospital of Jilin University, Changchun, Jilin, China, between May 2007 and May 2009. The mean durati…

Implementation of an Animal Sporotrichosis Surveillance and Control Program, Southeastern Brazil.

We report the implementation of an animal sporotrichosis surveillance and control program that evaluates strategies to identify suspected and infected cats in a municipality in southeastern Brazil. All adopted measures reinforced the program, although strategies had different abilities to detect the presence of infection.

Localized lymphatic sporotrichosis after fish-induced injury (Tilapia sp.).

Localized lymphatic sporotrichosis generally develops after the fungus Sporothrix schenckii is traumatically introduced into skin or mucosa by contaminated plant material. An 18-year-old male fisherman was injured by spines of the dorsal fin of a fish on the left third finger. The lesion became ulcerated, edematous and suppurative and did not respond to tetracycline and cephalexin. Fifteen days after the accident, a nodular lymphangitic pattern of swelling was observed. Histopathological findings and an intradermal test were suggestive of sporotrichosis and mycological cultures confirmed the d…

Primary pulmonary sporotrichosis with unusual fungal morphology.

Primary pulmonary sporotrichosis is a rare disease. Comstock and Wolson (1975) were able to trace approximately 30 such cases. We report a further case; to our knowledge, the various stages in the development of sporotrichosis, from a cigar body to the mature asteroid body with radiations which were present in our case, have not been so well demonstrated in a single case.

Disseminated sporotrichosis masquerading as tuberculosis in a patient without overt immunodeficiency: challenges in tuberculosis-endemic area.

Sporotrichosis is a mycosis with multitudinous clinical manifestation based on varying factors. We report a 78-year-old man who came to an out-patient clinic for progressive ulcerative cutaneous lesions for 6 months with concurrent pulmonary symptoms and osteomyelitis. Initial investigations were negative for infectious organisms and therapeutic trial of standard anti-tuberculous regimen failed to improve clinical symptoms. Subsequent fungal culture from the ulcerative skin showed dark colonies of Sporothrix schenckii complex. A review of sporotrichosis cases mimicking tuberculosis is provided…

Psoriasiform Sporotrichosis in a Child: A Rare Case Mimicking Psoriasis.

Fixed cutaneous sporotrichosis is rare and often mimics chronic inflammatory dermatoses, which can delay diagnosis. We describe an 11-year-old boy with an erythematous plaque on the left elbow persisting for 11 months after minor trauma, initially misdiagnosed as psoriasis. Fungal culture confirmed Sporothrix spp., while histopathology revealed nonspecific inflammation, and treatment with oral itraconazole 100 mg daily led to complete resolution within 12 weeks. This case highlights the need to consider sporotrichosis in the differential diagnosis of chronic, fixed plaques unresponsive to stan…

Ocular involvement in sporotrichosis: report of two cases in children.

Sporotrichosis is a subcutaneous mycosis that affects humans and animals, with a typically subacute or chronic evolution, caused by Sporothrix spp., a dimorphic fungus. Although the cutaneous form is the most frequent presentation, the ocular involvement has been more frequently diagnosed in endemic areas, affecting mainly children and the elderly. Approximately 80% of affected patients have the lymphocutaneous form, while only 2.3% have conjunctival lesions, with 0.7% showing primary ocular involvement. We describe two cases of sporotrichosis with ocular involvement in children through inocul…

Immunoreactive cutaneous sporotrichosis.

Sporothrix spp. infection can occur through the inoculation of the organism in the skin through direct contact with the soil (sapronotic infection), through contact with animals, such as infected cats and dogs (zoonotic infection), or less frequently via inhalation. With a subacute or chronic evolution, approximately 80% of patients affected by the disease present with the lymphocutaneous form; episodes associated with a hypersensitivity reaction are rare. The authors report the case of a 12-year-old child with immunoreactive sporotrichosis manifested clinically as erythema nodosum lesions in …

Squamous cell carcinoma subsequent to scarring caused by sporotrichosis: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Sporotrichosis is a fungal disease caused by the Sporothrix schenckii species complex. It is usually acquired by trauma with plants. Lymphatic-cutaneous is the most common clinical manifestation. CASE REPORT: The present case describes the development of an epidermoid carcinoma as a late complication on a long evolution sporotrichosis scar. During a period of 50 years, the patient had lesions in the right hand. Sporotrichosis was diagnosed and treated with potassium iodide. Eleven years after the healing of the lesions, a squamous cell carcinoma on the scar of this mycosis was dia…

Fine-needle aspiration biopsy of disseminated sporotrichosis: a case report.

In this report, we describe a case of disseminated sporotrichosis that was diagnosed by fine-needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB). The cytologic smears exhibited a large number of macrophages, few polymorphonuclear neutrophils and numerous round or oval, sometimes elongated, isolated and scattered yeast-like structures localized extracellularly or inside macrophages. These structures were clearly visualized by Giemsa and Papanicolaou methods. Cultures from skin biopsy material revealed fungal colonies which were subsequently identified as Sporothrix schenckii. The cytologic aspects, the correlation…
