Diversity in sound pressure levels and estimated active space of resident killer whale vocalizations.

Signal source intensity and detection range, which integrates source intensity with propagation loss, background noise and receiver hearing abilities, are important characteristics of communication signals. Apparent source levels were calculated for 819 pulsed calls and 24 whistles produced by free-ranging resident killer whales by triangulating the angles-of-arrival of sounds on two beamforming arrays towed in series. Levels in the 1-20 kHz band ranged from 131 to 168 dB re 1 microPa at 1 m, with differences in the means of different sound classes (whistles: 140.2+/-4.1 dB; variable calls: 14

Increasing on-task behaviour through interruption-prompting.

This study was designed to assess the effects of response-contingent interruption-prompting of stereotypic behaviour on on-task behaviour, inactivity and inappropriate behaviour. Also, the relationship between these behaviours was investigated. Five individuals with severe intellectual disability and autism participated. Data were collected within a reversal design. The results showed a statistically significant increase of on-task behaviour when interruption-prompting of stereotypic behaviour was in effect. Inactivity was statistically related to inappropriate behaviour. In terms of the conti

Behavioural Phenotypes and Neural Circuit Dysfunctions in Mouse Models of Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition primarily characterised by alterations in social interaction and communication combined with the presence of restricted interests and stereotyped behaviours. Mutations in several genes have been associated with ASD resulting in the generation of corresponding mouse models. Here, we focus on the behavioural (social and stereotyped behaviours), functional and structural traits of mice with mutations in genes encoding defined synaptic proteins including adhesion proteins, scaffolding proteins and subunits of channels and receptors.

Behaviour problems in institutionalised people with intellectual disability and schizophrenia spectrum disorders.

BACKGROUND: Although our understanding of dual diagnosis has improved, a deficit still exists in our knowledge of how schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SSD) manifest themselves in individuals with intellectual disability (ID). In addition, little is known about the relationship between behaviour problems and psychopathology in this population. METHOD: Utilising the Behavior Problems Inventory (BPI), three areas of problem behaviour (self-injurious, stereotyped, and aggressive/destructive) were assessed in 58 individuals with ID divided into three groups (with SSD, with a diagnosis of psychopa

Aggression and the termination of "rituals": a new variant of the escape function for challenging behavior?

Aggression and stereotyped behaviors are not uncommon among people with intellectual disabilities and they are often treated separately as operant behaviors. In this single case study, it is argued that the function of a young woman's aggressive behavior appeared to be that of avoiding or escaping the termination of a chain of complex stereotyped behavior (or "ritual"). She became aggressive only when this chain of stereotyped behavior was terminated and the aggression appeared to extinguish when it no longer led to escape from the termination of the "ritual". It is suggested that this is an e

Refinement of gerbil housing and husbandry in the laboratory.

Mongolian gerbils, Meriones unguiculatus, are widely used as model species in parasitology, and in research on epilepsy and ischaemia. When kept under standard laboratory housing conditions, gerbils develop two distinctive behavioural abnormalities: stereotypic digging and bar chewing. Our work centred on assessing the mechanisms leading to these stereotypies. We aimed at finding practical housing and husbandry solutions that would prevent the development of such stereotypies in the laboratory by addressing the behavioural needs of gerbils. Faecal cortisol levels were used as a non-invasive me

Efficacy of fluvoxamine as a treatment for behavioral symptoms in frontotemporal lobar degeneration patients.

Patients with frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD) present a profound personality change, social misconduct, overeating, and stereotyped behavior. We examined the hypothesis that many of the behavioral symptoms of FTLD will respond to selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). Sixteen FTLD patients were treated with an SSRI (fluvoxamine maleate) in an open 12-week trial. Treatment responses for stereotyped behavior and other neurobehavioral symptoms were evaluated by the Stereotypy Rating Inventory and the Neuropsychiatric Inventory. The behavioral symptoms, especially stereotyped be

Hippocampal replay contributes to within session learning in a temporal difference reinforcement learning model.

Temporal difference reinforcement learning (TDRL) algorithms, hypothesized to partially explain basal ganglia functionality, learn more slow … th. Adding developing replay to the model accelerates learning the correct path, but slows down the stereotyping of that path. These models provide testable predictions relating the effects of hippocampal inactivation as well as hippocampal replay on this task.

Changes in behavioural responses to the combined administration of D1 and D2 dopamine agonists in normosensitive and D1 supersensitive rats.

The selective D1 receptor stimulant SKF 38393 dose-dependently increased grooming time in rats without affecting locomotor activity or eliciting stereotyped behaviour. The selective D2 receptor agonist LY 171555 induced a dose-dependent increase in rat motility, a marked decrease in grooming time and a low occurrence of stereotyped behaviour. Concurrent administration of the two selective agonists induced high-degree stereotyped responses and reductions in locomotor and grooming behaviours. Rats withdrawn from repeated treatment with the selective D1 receptor blocker SCH 23390 (0.05 mg/kg twic

DRD3 gene and striatum in autism spectrum disorder.

A single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) of the DRD3 gene (rs167771) was recently associated with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). Different polymorphisms of rs167771 corresponded to varying degrees of stereotyped behaviour. As DRD3 receptors are relatively overexpressed in the striatum, we investigated whether striatal volume was related to these polymorphisms in autism. We assessed volumes of caudate nucleus and putamen in 86 participants with ASD (mean age 15.3 years). MANCOVA showed an association between alleles of the rs167771 SNP and the volume of striatal structures. Furthermore, greater

A Gender Bias in the Attribution of Creativity: Archival and Experimental Evidence for the Perceived Association Between Masculinity and Creative Thinking.

We propose that the propensity to think creatively tends to be associated with independence and self-direction-qualities generally ascribed to men-so that men are often perceived to be more creative than women. In two experiments, we found that "outside the box" creativity is more strongly associated with stereotypically masculine characteristics (e.g., daring and self-reliance) than with stereotypically feminine characteristics (e.g., cooperativeness and supportiveness; Study 1) and that a man is ascribed more creativity than a woman when they produce identical output (Study 2). Analyzing arc

A functional separation of behavioral stereotypy based on naloxone-reversible effects of seryl enkephalinamide: comparison with morphine.

Amphetamine's stereotypic behavioral actions, produced by the stimulant at a moderate dose, were inhibited by the systemic administration of seryl enkephalinamide, D-Ser2-D-Ser5-enkephalinamide, (Wy 42,896). The classical sequelae of stimulatory behavioral events: sniffing, head bobbing, rearing and locomotor activity, were significantly inhibited by the seryl enkephalinamide. Subsequently, pretreatment with the opiate receptor antagonist, naloxone, significantly blocked the inhibitory effects of the seryl enkephalinamide on the stereotypic and locomotor components. Concomitantly, the behavior

Self-stigma in alcohol dependence scale: development and validity of the short form.

BACKGROUND: Self-stigma is associated with low self-esteem, high shame and reduced drinking-refusal self-efficacy in people with alcohol use disorder (AUD). The Self-Stigma in Alcohol-Dependence Scale-Short Form (SSAD-SF) was designed to enable a brief, but valid assessment of AUD self-stigma. METHODS: We reduced the 64-item SSAD, originally derived from 16 stereotypes towards people with AUD, by removing the most offensive items based on perspectives of people with lived experience. The newly created scale was then assessed and validated in a cross-sectional study involving 156 people report

Expanding Benevolent Ageism: Replicating Attitudes of Overaccommodation to Older Men.

BACKGROUND: Older adults are stereotyped in a paternalistic manner (warm, but incompetent), deserving of assistance regardless of their need; however, little is known about how gender contextualizes these attitudes. The purpose of this study was to extend previous work that examined the malleability of the paternalistic older adult stereotype using a two-part experimental vignette. The goals of the current study included: (1) to examine attitudes of benevolent ageist behavior toward a male target, (2) to confirm whether attributions made toward an older male target change if they defy or confi

A reading of stereotypy in autism through the concept of iteration.

Stereotypies currently occupy an important place in the clinical profile of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Since they are usually described with the notions of sameness, resistance to change, or lack of variation, it would seem as if everything were repeated, and nothing could change. In this context, the following question arises: What is it that is repeated in stereotypical repetition? To answer this question, one must turn to clinical vignettes of patients diagnosed with ASD and to the concept of iteration stemming from two different epistemic fields (psychiatry and fractal geometry). Firs

Effects of gendered behavior on testosterone in women and men.

Testosterone is typically understood to contribute to maleness and masculinity, although it also responds to behaviors such as competition. Competition is crucial to evolution and may increase testosterone but also is selectively discouraged for women and encouraged for men via gender norms. We conducted an experiment to test how gender norms might modulate testosterone as mediated by two possible gender→testosterone pathways. Using a novel experimental design, participants (trained actors) performed a specific type of competition (wielding power) in stereotypically masculine vs. feminine ways

Cocaine-induced stereotypy is linked to an imbalance between the medial prefrontal and sensorimotor circuits of the basal ganglia.

The dysfunction of basal ganglia circuits related to stereotyped motor activity was analysed using the well-established model of cocaine-induced stereotypy in the rat. We examined and compared the neurochemical and electrophysiological effects occurring in medial prefrontal and sensorimotor basal ganglia circuits of the dorsal striatum after cocaine injection in sensitized and non-sensitized rats. Acute injections of cocaine (25 mg/kg), not inducing stereotyped behaviour, affected both medial prefrontal and sensorimotor circuits in a similar way: (i) a mild and delayed increase and decrease of
