Pentalogy of Cantrell is characterised by a combination of severe defects in the middle of the chest including the sternum, diaphragm, heart, and abdominal wall. Mortality rate after cardiac surgery is usually high. We report a successful total correction of the cardiac defects in a case of Pentalogy of Cantrell with a double-outlet right ventricle prior to abdominal wall defect repair.

A 20-year-old heroin user developed staphylococcus septic arthritis of the manubrium joint. The diagnosis was established by a culture of the infected tissue and blood culture. The clinical impression was aided by 99mTc radionuclide scintimetry. Early diagnosis localized the infection. Immediate antibiotic therapy solved a problem in the sternum that seems not to have been reported in the English literature.

Recent experience indicates that the intra-aortic balloon catheter, which is commonly inserted percutaneously into a femoral artery, can be inserted into the ascending aorta, despite lack of space because of the presence of the aortic cannula and coronary artery bypass grafts. Insertion is simple and removal of the balloon catheter is carried out under local anesthesia without opening the sternum.

We describe a baby with external and internal anomalies of the Majewski form of the short rib-polydactyly (SRP) syndromes. Previously unreported abnormal vertebral bodies, delayed ossification of the sternum and fibulae, and a diencephalic hamartoma are noted. These abnormalities and minimal histologic abnormality at the chondro-osseous junction suggest that this syndrome may be heterogeneous or more variable than previously known.

AIM: To present our experience in surgical treatment of funnel chest.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Seven patients (6 males and 1 female) aged 13 to 18 years were treated in the Department using Rathke-Schlegel's modification of Ravitch operative technique. In 2 patients the corrected deformity status was maintained by 2 Kirschner's pins that were placed substernally and attached bilaterally to the adjacent ribs. Syphilitic aortic aneurysm is a rare occurrence in the current antibiotic era. Cardiovascular syphilis has nearly disappeared in developed countries, although it remains a factor in differential diagnosis in developing nations. We report a case of syphilitic aortic aneurysm eroding through the sternum in a 52-year-old man who underwent successful surgical repair.
