Chronic gastric volvulus in dogs results in long-standing gastrointestinal signs unlike those of acute gastric dilatation and volvulus. This report describes chronic gastric volvulus in seven dogs. The majority of dogs presented with weight loss, chronic vomiting, lethargy and abdominal pain. A combination of radiographic, ultrasonographic and endoscopic imaging indicated altered positioning of gastric landmarks. Dynamic changes were identified in some cases. Exploratory coeliotomy and surgical gastropexy were performed in all dogs. Clinical signs improved or resolved in six of seven dogs post

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether myoglobin (Mb) is a useful prognostic indicator for outcome and to investigate any relationship between Mb and mortality in dogs with gastric dilatation-volvulus (GDV).
DESIGN: Prospective study.
SETTING: Veterinary teaching hospital.
ANIMALS: Seventy-two dogs with GDV.
INTERVENTIONS: Blood sampling.
MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS: Mb levels were measured at the time of diagnosis (Mbt0), 24 hours (Mbt1), and 48 hours (Mbt2) after signs of GDV were recognized. Fifty-seven dogs survived (group I) and 15 dogs did not survive (group II). Mbt0 differed significan

The purpose of the study was to evaluate ischaemia/reperfusion injury in simulated abomasal volvulus in sheep. Sixteen ewes were randomly allocated to three groups. The control group (n=4) served as sham-operated controls. The animals of the ischaemia group and reperfusion group (n=6, each) underwent a simulated 'abomasal volvulus'. The abomasum was exteriorized under general inhalation anesthesia and forced into a 180( composite function) anticlockwise rotation around its longitudinal axis, followed by another 270( composite function) anticlockwise rotation around its transectional axis. Gastric volvulus can result in complications such as gastric ischemia, perforation, and haemorrhage. There is consensus on repair upon diagnosis. We present a patient of gastric volvulus, who remained under the care of physicians with symptom of chest pain for over three years and was eventually treated by laparoscopic surgery.

We report on a case of a patient with recurrent pneumonia related to a pharygo-esophageal (Zenker's) diverticulum associated with a chronic thoracic gastric volvulus. Mechanism, diagnosis and treatment of this rare disease are discussed.

The case of a 75-year-old man with a history of hiatal hernia, who develops an acute gastric volvulus 17 days after a superior lobectomy of the left lung, is described. No similar cases were found in literature.

Gastric myoelectric activity was measured in 10 dogs with spontaneous gastric dilatation-volvulus (GDV). Myoelectric activity was recorded with temporary, retrievable wire electrodes placed on the serosal surface of the stomach after derotation and tube gastrostomy. Gastric myoelectric activity was recorded for 1 hour daily, beginning with the day of surgery (less than 24 hours), 24, 48, 72, 96, 120, 144, and 168 hours after surgery. Recordings were also obtained for 1 hour daily after feeding, beginning 24 hours after surgery. Bradygastria was the predominate dysrhythmia immediately after sur

Gastric volvulus is not a rare condition and 350 authentic cases have been documented in the adult population. Most often, gastric volvulus was associated with a large paraoesophageal hernia (40%). We report seven new cases of gastric volvulus: 5 were due to a large paraoesophageal hernia, 1 to mixed hiatus hernia, and 1 to a sliding hiatus hernia. We did not observe any cases of acute strangulation with gastric necrosis. The lesions were reversible in the three cases of acute and four cases of chronic gastric volvulus. Surgical treatment included gastric volvulus reduction and repair of hiatu

Gastric volvulus is a rare medical condition that necessitates a high suspicion index to diagnose. Acute gastric volvulus will often present with nonspecific but severe symptoms of abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and in some instances, evidence of organ ischemia. In this case report, we present an 88-year-old woman who was admitted after a mechanical fall. On the third day of hospitalization, she complained of new-onset epigastric pain, nausea, and vomiting. Imaging demonstrated nonobstructed intrathoracic organo-axial gastric volvulus. Given the patient's significant comorbidities, surgical

OBJECTIVES: To report the short- and long-term complications and clinical outcomes of a cohort of dogs managed for gastric dilatation-volvulus using a modified right-sided tube gastropexy technique.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Retrospective case series.
RESULTS: Of 31 dogs treated, 29 (93·5%) had an excellent short-term outcome, and gastric dilatation-volvulus did not recur in any dog. Twenty-six dogs (84%) were initially fed via the gastrostomy tube postoperatively; three (9·7%) suffered a major complication including septic peritonitis (n=1), and premature tube removal (n=2). Fourteen dogs (45·
