This is a study of 49 patients with lesions of the spine excluding primary tumors of the spinal cord. All patients were examined by computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging. Comparing both methods we observed slight diagnostic advantages for magnetic resonance imaging in inflammatory and neoplastic disease. Especially for evaluation of the spinal cord and subarachnoid space MR-imaging is far superior to computed tomography.

A case of cavernous angioma of the medulla oblongata with clinical manifestations developing during the course of upper respiratory tract infection in a boy aged 16 years is described. In the first stage of the disease there were bulbar signs of gradually increasing intensity without changes in CSF. In the third week fatal haemorrhage to the medulla oblongata perforating into the cerebral ventricles and subarachnoid space occurred.

BACKGROUND: The flow of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) has been described as a unidirectional system with the choroid plexus serving as the prima … nstrates similar physiology to that of water elsewhere in the body. CSF "circulates" throughout the subarachnoid space in a pulsatile to-and-fro fashion. Osmolarity plays a critical role in CSF dynamics. Aquaporin-4 and the glymphatic system contribute to CSF volume and flow by establishing osmolarity gradients and facilitating CSF movement. Multiple studies demonst …

BACKGROUND: Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF)-venous fistula presents a pathologic connection between spinal subarachnoid space and adjacent epidural vein or veins. It is one of the 3 main causes of spontaneous intracranial hypotension along with dural defects and meningeal diverticulum. We performed a systematic review of the literature and analyzed individual participants' data focusing on clinical outcomes after different treatment modalities of CSF-venous fistula.
METHODS: Systematic review was conducted according to PRISMA recommendations. Literature search was performed in PubMed and Web of Sci…

Spinal cord subependymomas (SCSEs) in children are extremely rare, and no reports distinguishing SCSEs from syringomyelia have been published. We report a case of a 10-year-old boy who presented with torticollis, scoliosis, as well as pain that had begun in the posterior portion of the neck and progressed to the right shoulder and upper arm. Magnetic resonance imaging showed an intramedullary cyst-like lesion with the same signal intensity as that of cerebrospinal fluid. Idiopathic syringomyelia with scoliosis was first suspected, and a syrinx-subarachnoid space shunt was performed. After surg…

BACKGROUND: Virchow-Robin spaces (VRSs) surround perforating cerebral arteries and are reported to be found with increasing frequency with advancing age. In addition, some studies indicate an association between VRSs and vascular dementias. The present study examined the incidence of VRSs in patients with idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (INPH) and considered their use as a potential surrogate imaging marker of coexisting microvascular disease in patients with this condition.
METHODS: The MRI incidence of VRS in the centrum semiovale (CS), basal ganglia (BG), mesencephalon (MES), and

Subarachnoid-pleural fistula is an unusual complication of spinal cord injury without radiologic abnormality (SCIWORA) and a rare cause of posttraumatic pleural effusion. The clinical presentation and surgical management of a child, the first with this complication seen at our institution, who sustained a T-6 SCIWORA and a cerebrospinal fluid-pleural effusion following a pedestrian-motor vehicle collision is discussed. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) proved superior to myelography in demonstrating the fistulous connection and associated cord damage. The fistula was successfully closed via a t

A 66-year-old woman had autopsy-proven miliary tuberculosis, with regional involvement of the meninges of the left Sylvian fissure. Radionuclide studies of the brain demonstrated the unusual findings of increased perfusion to the left hemisphere and linear increased activity corresponding to the left Sylvian fissure. Computed tomography of the brain was initially within normal limits at a time when the radionuclide study was clearly abnormal.

The relationship between high density (HD) on computed tomographic (CT) scans (which indicates a collection of blood in the subarachnoid space) and cerebral vasospasm was studied in 177 patients with ruptured aneurysm. The development of cerebral vasospasm was confirmed at the high rate of 84.6% in 26 cases where HD was demonstrated on the CT scan within 4 days after subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). In 8 cases where HD was not found on the CT scan obtained within 4 days after SAH, no cerebral vasospasm was seen. However, no relationship was found between HD and the occurrence of cerebral vasospa…

A 35-year-old female developed a subarachnoid hemorrhage from an aneurysm located at the fenestration of the vertebrobasilar (VB) junction. The patient was treated with Guglielmi detachable coils (GDCs). The aneurysm was successfully occluded using 8 coils despite the fact that 2 major complications occurred during the procedure: perforation of the aneurysm with a coil and thrombosis of the parent artery. The GDC that had perforated the aneurysm was left and remained partially in the subarachnoid space, and embolization was continued. The thrombus was mechanically crushed and dissolved. Forty …

A technique for intracranial pressure (ICP) monitoring in the rat that uses a permanent cisterna magna cannula is described. The cannula is placed into the subarachnoid space through the atlanto-occipital membrane with the operating microscope and is secured with cement. The distal end is connected to a pressure transducer and a polygraph recorder. To study the consistency of this technique, 12 anesthetized adult rats were subjected to baseline ICP measurements 2 days after placement of the cannula. Baseline pressures ranged between 1.0 and 10.0 cm H2O, with a mean of 5.6 cm H2O. Respiratory v…

Chronic communicating hydrocephalus was produced in adult dogs by injection of silastic into the subarachnoid space. Electron microscopy was used to verify the sequence of pathologic changes in the ventricular wall. The pathologic findings were correlated with cisternographic images and measurements of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) pressure. Early in hydrocephalus, the CSF pressure was increased and cisternograms showed ventricular entry and clearing; the ependyma was stretched and fluid accumulated in subependymal regions. In animals with chronic hydrocephalus, the CSF pressure was normal and cis…

The normal suprasellar subarachnoid space (so-called "suprasellar hexagon") and its content are fairly well demonstrated by CT. Abnormal appearance (obstruction, stenosis, asymmetry) of this space is always suspect of a suprasellar space occupying lesion. Enhancing (intravenous application of iodine containing contrast medium) helps to delineate the exact tumor extension. The point of origin--important for deciding on the nature of a lesion--is often difficult to determine. The CT-pattern itself is not specific for a certain kind of tumor. We have observed a typical chiasmatic syndrome with al…

INTRODUCTION: Cerebrospinal Fluid (CSF) rhinorrhea results from breakdown in the integrity of structures separating the subarachnoid space and nasal cavity, namely subarachnoid space and dura mater, the bony skull base and periostea alongside the upper aerodigestive tract mucosa. Endoscopic repair is considered the treatment of choice for CSF rhinorrhea. Our aim of study was to analyze the etiopathogenesis and outcomes of treatment.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A retrospective study review of patients treated with endoscopic repair of CSF rhinorrhea at tertiary care hospital in ENT Department Benazi…

OBJECT: Inflammation in the subarachnoid space and apoptosis of arterial endothelial cells have been implicated in the development of delayed cerebral vasospasm after subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). The authors investigated mechanisms of possible antivasospastic effects of N-benzyl-oxycarbonyl-Val-Ala-Asp-fluoromethylketone (Z-VAD-FMK), a caspase inhibitor that can inhibit both inflammatory and apoptotic systems, in animal models of SAH.
METHODS: Rabbits were assigned to three groups of eight animals each and were subjected to SAH by injection of blood into the cisterna magna. The experiments …
