15 insulin-dependent diabetics who had been hospitalised for evaluation and modification of their treatment regimen were trained to take their own blood samples with 10 microliter glass capillaries. Blood sugar self-profiles were analysed from each patient twice in hospital and afterwards at home. Urine samples were also self-tested for sugar. The profiles were carried out reliably and seem to cause a minimum of trouble to the patient. This method of feedback, with comparison of blood and urine sugar values, increased the patient's understanding and ability to vary his own insulin dosis. The a

Blood surgar and serum potassium (K+) concentrations were measured before, during and 60 min after surgery in two groups of 10 non-diabetic patients during nitrous oxide/halothane/tubocurarine anaesthesia. In the control group the arterial pressure was maintained within the patients' normal ranges, while in the study group pentolinium was administered i.v. (average 22 mg per patient) to achieve and maintain a mean arterial pressure of 50 mm Hg (+/-10 SEM). In the normotensive group the blood sugar concentration increased markedly and significantly during surgery and in the early postoperative

A striking increase in birth weights and height measurements in children of Canadian Eskimos was observed in recent years. The growth acceleration seen to varying degrees in different Eskimo groups appears most closely to parallel the increase in the per capita annual sugar consumption which has more than quadrupled during the last decade in some trading areas of the Canadian Central and Eastern Arctic, while the per capita consumption of protein derived from animal sources shows a reverse relationship.Canadian Eskimos do, therefore, contrary to what is stated in earlier publications, conform t
