Surgical management of an unstable occipital condyle fracture in a dog using a patient-specific CNC-milled titanium implant: a case report.

A 10-year-old castrated male Pomeranian was evaluated after a fall and presented with tetraparesis, dysphagia, and headturn. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed a right occipital condyle fracture that caused brainstem compression and cerebellar infarction from a displaced bony fragment. According to the Anderson and Montesano classification in human medicine, this case was presumed to be Type 3, indicating instability, and surgical correction was considered. A bone fragment located in the medulla oblongata was left in situ owing to the potential risk of severe complications from removal.

Mesenchymal stem cells from Cerdocyon thous: in vitro characterization and therapeutic potential.

Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) exhibit immunomodulatory and regenerative properties that have been extensively investigated in domestic species. However, knowledge of their biological characteristics in wildlife species remains limited and is critical for advancing translational research and conservation medicine. Thus, this study aimed to isolate, characterize, and evaluate the immunomodulatory and neuroregenerative potential of adipose tissue-derived MSCs (AT-MSCs) from crab-eating foxes (Cerdocyon thous). Subcutaneous adipose tissue samples were collected from five healthy adult animals duri

Utility of PLUS CYCLE to measure physical activity and sleep duration and detect postoperative sleep disturbances in hospitalized dogs.

Sleep is essential for animal health and welfare. In humans, postsurgical sleep disturbances can delay postoperative recovery. However, objective sleep evaluation in dogs and studies of postoperative sleep disturbances in animals have not been reported. This study aimed to determine whether activity monitors (PLUS CYCLE®; JARMeC, Kanagawa, Japan) can accurately monitor the condition of hospitalized dogs and postoperative sleep disturbances. First, the activity data collected by PLUS CYCLE® were compared with the observation data in a video of hospitalized dogs (n = 9). We determined the correl

Treatment outcomes of dogs with transitional cell carcinoma.

Transitional cell carcinoma (TCC) is the most prevalent cancer of the urinary tract in dogs. The prognosis is often poor, and the optimal standard treatment has not been established. The objectives of this study were to (1) describe the clinical outcomes of dogs with TCC, and (2) determine the potential effects of tumor locations and treatment modalities on the survival times of patients. Electronic records of client-owned dogs with TCC treated with different modalities in a large veterinary hospital in Hong Kong (2005-2024) were evaluated. Of 84 confirmed cases included in the study, 49 (58.3

Comparison of survival time of Echinococcus granulosus protoscolices in different culture media and temperatures and evaluation of their ability to generate cysts in mice.

Hydatidosis is a disease caused by the larval stage of Echinococcus granulosus, which has great importance in medicine and veterinary medicine. Protoscolices (PSCs) of fertile hydatid cysts play a critical role in secondary echinococcosis after surgery. Fertile cysts were acquired from infected sheep at the local municipal abattoir in Ahvaz, southwest of Iran. PSCs were obtained aseptically and transferred to 10 different culture media and kept at 4°C and 37°C to determine the duration of PSCs’ survival. Then, 2000 live PSCs from each of the culture media were injected into the peritoneal cavi
