Gross Anatomy and Approach to the Humerus and Femur in the White-Eared Opossum (Didelphis albiventris).

The white-eared opossum (Didelphis albiventris) is a Neotropical marsupial that readily adapts to urban environments. Due to its presence in anthropogenic habitats, this species is frequently exposed to vehicle collisions and dog attacks. Such trauma often results in long bone fractures, with humeral and femoral fractures being common in roadkill specimens. Long bone fractures can be stabilised using external or internal skeletal fixation devices. Therefore, detailed knowledge of the anatomical features of the humerus and femur, as well as the associated muscular and neurovascular structures i

Clinical outcome of femoral neck system versus cannulated compression screws for fixation of femoral neck fracture in younger patients.

BACKGROUND: The clinical outcome of a new fixation device (femoral neck system, FNS) for femoral neck fractures remains unclear. The main purpose of this study was to evaluate two different internal fixation methods for the treatment of femoral neck fractures in patients aged under 60 years. METHODS: We retrospectively studied patients who underwent internal fixation surgery in our hospital for femoral neck fractures between January 2017 and January 2020. Cannulated compression screws (CCS) and FNS groups were divided according to different internal fixation methods. General data (such as sex

Review of Calcaneal Osteotomies Fixed With a Calcaneal Slide Plate.

BACKGROUND: The calcaneal slide osteotomy is a common procedure used for the surgical correction of heel varus and valgus deformities. A variety of fixation methods exist including screws and plates. The literature shows a high rate of hardware prominence with screws leading to subsequent removal of hardware. Few studies have examined the use of plates for fixation of a calcaneal osteotomy. The purpose of this study was to assess outcomes following fixation of a calcaneal osteotomy with a calcaneal slide plate. METHODS: This is a retrospective consecutive case series of all patients who under

Comparative analysis of intramedullary nail fixation versus casting for treatment of distal radius fractures.

PURPOSE: Intramedullary fixation is one treatment option for distal radius fractures. Our purpose was to compare the outcomes of intramedullary nailing to those of casting for these injuries. METHODS: From 2006 to 2009, we reviewed 63 adult patients with isolated distal radius fractures. Thirty-one patients had surgical fixation with an intramedullary device (IMN group) within 4 weeks of the injury, and 32 (cast group) had casting as definitive treatment of the fracture. Clinical outcomes (grip strength; Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder, and Hand scores; active wrist range of motion; and com

Posterior atlanto-axial fusion with the Olerud Cervical Fixation System for odontoid fractures and C1-C2 instability in rheumatoid arthritis.

In posterior C1-C2 fusion, traditional wire fixation gives poor stability. The bone quality is often insufficient to provide the competent structural bone graft that is required, and the introduction of sublaminar wires is somewhat dangerous. The stability is markedly improved by adding transarticular screws, but the drawbacks of structural bone graft and sublaminar wires remain. The C1 claw of the Olerud Cervical Fixation System improves C1-C2 fixation without relying on structural bone graft or compromising the spinal canal. The aim of this study was to evaluate radiological healing and poss

Revision anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction using autografts with a polyester fixation device.

Twenty-nine patients who had undergone anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) revision were evaluated retrospectively between 1992 and 2000. A similar surgical technique was used in all cases. Twenty-six patients underwent revision following failed primary and revision surgery with the ABC scaffold ligament. There were 2 failed primary semitendinosus/gracilis (STG) autografts and one failed bone patella tendon bone (BPTB) autograft. Autologous hamstring tendons (STG) were used in 26 knees, quadriceps tendon in 2 and BPTB autograft in 1 knee. The Mark I Soffix soft tissue fixation device was used in

Use of ring fixator in the management of degloving injuries of lower limb.

High-velocity trauma causes degloving injuries of extremities. Management depends upon the viability of the degloved flap. The degloved area must be covered either with flaps or with split skin grafts. Various methods have been described to provide skin coverage. However, graft uptake depends upon the surgical expertise, graft quality, graft bed circulation and of course immobilization of the grafted area, especially across joints. We describe here a simple technique, which eventually helps graft bed preparation, eases application of graft tissue, facilitates graft care and allows passive mobi

Impact of pectus excavatum on pulmonary function before and after repair with the Nuss procedure.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Patient reports of preoperative exercise intolerance and improvement after surgical repair of pectus excavatum (Pex) have been documented but not substantiated in laboratory studies. This may be because no study has been large enough to determine if pulmonary function tests (PFTs) in the Pex population are significantly different from the normal population, and none has assessed improvement in pulmonary function after Nuss bar removal. METHODS: The authors studied PFT results in 408 Pex patients before repair and in a subset of 45 patients after Nuss procedure and bar remo

Outcomes of length-stable fixation of femoral neck fractures.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

INTRODUCTION: The most common implants for treating unstable femoral neck fractures are sliding constructs, which allow postoperative collapse. Successful healing, typically, is a malunion with a shortened femoral neck. Functional sequelae resulting from altered femoral neck biomechanics have been increasingly reported. Re-operation rate due to nonunion, avascular necrosis, hardware cut-out and prominence is high with this treatment modality. We evaluated the outcomes of patients with femoral neck fractures treated with stable calcar pivot reduction, intraoperative compression across the fract

Changes in Nerve Conduction Studies After Distal Radius Fracture Fixation Using a Volar Approach and Locked Plate.

PURPOSE: To determine whether there are changes in nerve conduction studies (NCS) of the median nerve after distal radius fracture (DRF) and to determine how operative fixation through a volar approach with a locking plate contributes to nerve conduction changes. We hypothesized that a considerable percentage of patients would have electrodiagnostic evidence of median neuropathy at the wrist after fracture, but fixation with a volar locked plate would not worsen the electrodiagnostic findings. METHODS: This was a prospective cohort study of 14 neurologically asymptomatic patients who underwen

Magnetic Laryngeal Reanimation as a Novel Treatment of Vocal Fold Immobility.

OBJECTIVE: Vocal fold paralysis may result from surgical complications, trauma, tumor, or unknown causes. When both cords are affected, paramedian fixation can lead to life-threatening obstruction. Current treatments, including tracheostomy, cordotomy, and arytenoidectomy, compromise speech and swallow function to maintain a safe airway. To preserve all three critical laryngeal functions, Otolaryngologists need a solution for bilateral vocal fold paralysis that restores motion. This study uses implantable electromagnet technology to create dynamic vocal fold movement in a proof-of-concept, pre
