The role of the wolf in endemic sylvatic Trichinella britovi infection in the Abruzzi region of Central Italy.

During the period 2004-2014 in the Abruzzi region (Central Italy), muscle samples gathered from hunted wild boars (n=16,323) and retrieved from carcasses of other susceptible wild mammals (n=838) and birds (n=438) were tested for Trichinella larvae according to European Union regulations. Although no positive samples were found from wild birds, 91 wild mammals tested positive. Six species were found to harbor Trichinella spp. infections, namely wolf (Canis lupus, 59 positive samples out of 218), red fox (Vulpes vulpes, 24/480), wild boar (Sus scrofa, 3/16,323), stone marten (Martes foina, 2/27…

The effect of weather conditions on burnt bone fragmentation.

This research assesses how weather conditions, such as temperature and rainfall, affect the fragmentation of burnt bone. The recovery of hum … ected fragmentation, and expected differences in fragmentation, under different weather conditions. Sus scrofa (domestic pig) limbs were burned in a series of wood fires spaced over a period of eight months, from winter through fall, in a warm summer continental climate (Köppen-Geiger classification Dfb). Bone fragments were sorted by size and the proportion …

Comparative genomics and proteomics to study tissue-specific response and function in natural Mycobacterium bovis infections.

Bovine tuberculosis (bTB) is an established zoonotic disease which affects cattle and wildlife worldwide and new strategies are required to control and eradicate the disease. The European wild boar (Sus scrofa) is a major reservoir of bTB in Spain. The objective of this paper was to review tissue-specific response and function of mandibular lymph nodes (MLN) and oropharyngeal tonsils (OT) in European wild boar naturally infected with Mycobacterium bovis. Genomics and proteomics data were used to compare differential gene expression and global protein patterns in OT and MLN of M. bovis-infected…

Trichinellosis and trichinellosis control in Germany.

In nineteenth century Germany, trichinellosis was a relatively frequent disease. From 1861 to 1890 more than 12,500 cases, with an average m … ly slaughtered pigs, minced pork and sausages of partly unknown origin, and uninspected wild boars (Sus scrofa). Today, besides pigs, wild boars can be regarded as main sources of human infections. During the last two decades, two positive wild boars have been detected every year, thus demonstrating that a sylvatic cycle still exists. Measures to control tri …

A Pilot Study for Establishing DSS-Induced Colitis Model in Minipigs.

BACKGROUND: Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease characterized by relapsing and remitting colonic mucosal inflammation. Rodent dextran sodium sulfate (DSS) induced colitis models are widely used but have limited translational relevance due to anatomical and physiological differences. As a pilot feasibility study, this work aimed to explore whether graded DSS administration could induce reproducible colitis-like features in minipigs. METHODS: We developed a pilot large-animal UC model using Sus scrofa minipigs. Eight male Micropigs® were divided into four groups, wit…

Multiplex serological screening of wild boar as sentinels of emerging zoonoses: HEV, WNV, and TBEV distribution in Saxony, Germany.

Targeted wildlife surveillance enables early detection of emerging infections and facilitates prevention of wildlife-human spillover events. The Eurasian wild boar (Sus scrofa) serves as a valuable indicator species for wildlife surveillance due to its broad European distribution and its ability to adapt to diverse habitats. Wild boar and domestic pigs are the main reservoir for hepatitis E virus (HEV) genotype 3, which can be transmitted to humans mainly through consumption of undercooked meat. Wild boar can also be infected by vector-borne pathogens like the mosquito-transmitted orthoflavivi…

Seroprevalence and risk factors of Toxoplasma gondii infection in wild ungulates that cohabit in a natural park with human-animal interaction in the Mediterranean ecosystem.

The possibility of Toxoplasma gondii transmitted from game meat to humans is of public health concern. Here we determined seroprevalence and risk factors associated with T. gondii in large game ungulates that cohabit in Sierras de Cazorla, Segura and Las Villas Natural Park (SCSV-NP) (Southern Spain), a natural park with high human-animal interaction. Antibodies against T. gondii in 328 wild ungulates were assayed by the modified agglutination test (MAT ≥ 1:25). Antibodies were found in 39 (11.9%, 95% CI: 8.4-15.4) wild ungulates, with seroprevalence levels of 20.8% in wild boars (Sus scrofa) …

ESBL/AmpC-Producing Escherichia coli in Wild Boar: Epidemiology and Risk Factors.

The complex health problem of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) involves many host species, numerous bacteria and several routes of transmission. Extended-spectrum β-lactamase and AmpC (ESBL/AmpC)-producing Escherichia coli are among the most important strains. Moreover, wildlife hosts are of interest as they are likely antibiotics free and are assumed as environmental indicators of AMR contamination. Particularly, wild boar (Sus scrofa) deserves attention because of its increased population densities, with consequent health risks at the wildlife-domestic-human interface, and the limited data ava…

A framework for surveillance of emerging pathogens at the human-animal interface: Pigs and coronaviruses as a case study.

Pigs (Sus scrofa) may be important surveillance targets for risk assessment and risk-based control planning against emerging zoonoses. Pigs have high contact rates with humans and other animals, transmit similar pathogens as humans including CoVs, and serve as reservoirs and intermediate hosts for notable human pandemics. Wild and domestic pigs both interface with humans and each other but have unique ecologies that demand different surveillance strategies. Three fundamental questions shape any surveillance program: where, when, and how can surveillance be conducted to optimize the surveillanc…

Transcription from a gene desert in a melanoma porcine model.

The genetic mechanisms underlying cutaneous melanoma onset and progression need to be further understood to improve patients' care. Several studies have focused on the genetic determinism of melanoma development in the MeLiM pig, a biomedical model of cutaneous melanoma. The objective of this study was to better describe the influence of a particular genomic region on melanoma progression in the MeliM model. Indeed, a large region of the Sus scrofa chromosome 1 has been identified by linkage and association analyses, but the causal mechanisms have remained elusive. To deepen the analysis of th…

Application of Genetically Engineered Pigs in Biomedical Research.

Progress in genetic engineering over the past few decades has made it possible to develop methods that have led to the production of transge … ntation into human recipients, i.e., xenotransplantation. Numerous studies have shown that the pig (Sus scrofa domestica) is the most suitable species both as a research model for human diseases and as an optimal organ donor for xenotransplantation. Short pregnancy, short generation interval, and high litter size make the production of transgenic pigs less t …

Hemispheric Specialization for Processing the Communicative and Emotional Content of Vocal Communication in a Social Mammal, the Domestic Pig.

In humans, speech perception is lateralized, with the left hemisphere of the brain dominant in processing the communicative content and the right hemisphere dominant in processing the emotional content. However, still little is known about such a division of tasks in other species. We therefore investigated lateralized processing of communicative and emotionally relevant calls in a social mammal, the pig (Sus scrofa). Based on the contralateral connection between ears and hemispheres, we compared the behavioural and cardiac responses of 36 young male pigs during binaural and monaural (left or …

Multiple refinements to the anaesthetic protocol for laparoscopic orthotopic kidney auto-transplantation in a pig model.

Fifty-four pigs ( Sus scrofa, Large White cross) from a commercial pig farm were anaesthetised over a six-year period from October 2011. The procedural stages included initial instrumentation for intra-operative monitoring, laparoscopic nephrectomy, preparation of the kidney graft, orthotopic auto-transplantation by either a laparoscopic approach or an open surgical approach, and ligation of the contralateral ureter. During the evolution and establishment of this pig model multiple refinements were introduced: (1) a heat pad was changed to a circulating warm air blanket; (2) routine administra…

Prevalence of hepatitis E virus infection in wild boars from Spain: a possible seasonal pattern?

BACKGROUND: It has been shown that wildlife can serve as natural reservoirs of hepatitis E virus (HEV). The wild boar (Sus scrofa) is probably the main natural reservoir of HEV and could therefore represent an important route of transmission in Europe, especially in regions where game meat is widely consumed. We evaluated the prevalence of HEV infection in wild boar in the south of Spain, with the aim of identifying associated risk factors. A cross-sectional study that included hunted wild boar was carried out during the 2015/2016 hunting season (October 15 to February 15) in Andalusia (southe…
