Self-sealing sclerocorneal tunnel incisions with an external frown entry are widely used for implantation of poly(methyl methacrylate) intraocular lenses. Although safe and effective, these incisions have certain drawbacks. We developed a wound construction in which a straight external incision is used in conjunction with a tension-free, infinity-type suture. Out of 100 consecutive cases, only two did not seal satisfactorily at the conclusion of surgery but were tight upon placement of re-enforcing sutures. Postoperatively, the valve remained tight in all cases; there were no cases of hypotony…

Reports have demonstrated that Crouzon's disease is associated with a gene on chromosome 10 coding for the fibroblastic growth factor (FGF) receptor 2. The purpose of this investigation was to evaluate the FGF receptor 2 levels in cranial sutures of children with Crouzon's disease and nonsyndromic, isolated craniosynostosis. Twelve children between the ages of 6 and 24 months were studied. Four patients had Crouzon's disease with coronal suture stenosis. The 8 remaining had a nonsyndromic, isolated coronal stenosis. Stenosed and adjacent nonstenosed cranial sutures were removed at cranioplasty…

A new method has been developed for surgery of the lacrimal duct: direct suture with 10/0 nylon suture without intubation. The authors report their experience in the treatment of canalicular lacerations (20 cases) and herpetic canalicular stenosis (3 cases). Results were very good in the first group and variable in the second. Epiphora can persist in the second group, though to a lesser degree, because of the displacement of the lacrimal point.

BACKGROUND: While studies have demonstrated that the "hashtag" suture pattern may improve biomechanical repair properties in radial meniscal tears, the effect of the type of suture within the hashtag is unknown.
HYPOTHESIS/PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the repair strength of the hashtag repair using suture tape compared to traditional 2-0 suture. It was hypothesized that suture tape, particularly in the "rebar" portion of the hashtag repair, would significantly increase construct strength compared to traditional 2-0 suture.
STUDY DESIGN: Controlled laboratory study.

HYPOTHESIS AND BACKGROUND: Polyethylene (PE) wear debris has long been known to be important for the development of osteolysis and aseptic loosening in total joint replacements. Evaluation of shoulder hemiarthroplasty (HA) specimens provided a unique opportunity to study the histopathologic response when a PE-bearing surface was absent. We hypothesized that HAs would exhibit no significant inflammatory periprosthetic tissue response due to the absence of significant numbers of wear particles from the articulation.
METHODS: We analyzed 13 shoulder HAs. The explants were examined for damage to

As a basic science, craniofacial research embraces multiple facets spanning from molecular regulation of craniofacial development, cell biology/signaling and ultimately translational craniofacial biology. Calvarial sutures coordinate development of the skull, and the premature fusion of one or more, leads to craniosynostosis. Animal models provide significant contributions toward craniofacial biology and clinical/surgical treatments of patients with craniofacial disorders. Studies employing mouse models are costly and time consuming for housing/breeding. Herein, we present the establishment of…

BACKGROUND: Various suture materials are available for arthroscopic rotator cuff repair. More recently, suture tapes have become popular as they are perceived to be easier to use with less soft tissue irritation. However, little is known about their biomechanical and clinical properties compared with conventional sutures in rotator cuff repairs.
PURPOSE: To perform a systematic review and meta-analysis on whether suture tapes are biomechanically superior to conventional sutures in arthroscopic rotator cuff repairs and whether this translates to superior functional outcomes and a lower inciden…

BACKGROUND: A rupture of the distal biceps tendon is the most common tendon rupture of the elbow and has received increased attention in the past few years. Newly developed all-suture anchors have the potential to minimize surgical trauma and the risk of adverse events because of the use of flexible drills and smaller drill diameters.
PURPOSE/HYPOTHESIS: The purpose was to biomechanically compare all-suture anchors and titanium suture anchors for distal biceps tendon repair in cadaveric specimens. The hypothesis was that all-suture anchors would show no differences in load to failure or displ

The cranial suture complex is a heterogeneous tissue consisting of osteogenic progenitor cells and mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) from bone marrow and suture mesenchyme. The fusion of cranial sutures is a highly coordinated and tightly regulated process during development. Craniosynostosis is a congenital malformation caused by premature fusion of cranial sutures. While the progenitor cells derived from the cranial suture complex should prove valuable for studying the molecular mechanisms underlying suture development and pathogenic premature suture fusion, primary human cranial suture progenit…
