Impact of mHealth-Augmented Social Support on Health Care Use Among Patients With Diabetes: Secondary Analysis of the TExT-MED+FANS Trial.

BACKGROUND: The rising cost of unscheduled acute health care, particularly for emergency department (ED) visits, poses significant financial burdens. In 2021, aggregate costs for treat-and-release ED visits in the United States accounted for an estimated US $80 billion, while the total annual cost of diabetes was US $412.9 billion in 2022-representing about 1 in every 4 health care dollars, 61% of which are directly linked to diabetes. OBJECTIVE: This study explores the impact of a mobile health (mHealth) intervention with augmented social support delivered via guided SMS text messaging on he…

Text4Heart II - improving medication adherence in people with heart disease: a study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Cardiac rehabilitation (CR) is an essential component of contemporary management for patients with coronary heart disease, including following an acute coronary syndrome (ACS). CR typically involves education and support to assist people following an ACS to make lifestyle changes and prevent subsequent events. Despite its benefits, uptake and participation in tradition CR programs is low. The use of mobile technologies (mHealth) offers the potential to improve reach, access, and delivery of CR support. We aim to determine the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of a text-messaging

Text Neck-Induced Cervical Osteoarthritis in a Young Adult: A Case Report.

Text neck is a syndrome characterized by pain and discomfort in the neck and shoulders resulting from holding the head forward for extended periods while using smartphones or texting messages. With the widespread use of mobile devices, cervical osteoarthritis is becoming increasingly prevalent among young people. A 25-year-old college student presented with recurrent headaches and persistent neck and shoulder pain for five years. Her symptoms significantly worsened during the COVID-19 pandemic due to extended hours spent texting on her smartphone (approximately 8-10 hours per day) and particip

Exploration of Implementation Patterns and Content from a Text-Based Outreach Intervention Clinical Trial for Newly Diagnosed, HIV-Positive MSM in Beijing, China.

The Multi-component HIV Intervention Packages for Chinese MSM (China MP3) project sought to facilitate engagement in care and initiation of antiretroviral therapy among newly HIV-diagnosed men who have sex with men in Beijing, China through the implementation of in-person peer-counseling (PC) and a weekly short message service (SMS)-based outreach text with as-needed follow-up during the first 12-months of living with HIV. Implementation of the interactive text-based intervention used a 'ticket system' to monitor and document responses to texted check-ins and PC follow-up. Using this tracking

Cultural adaptation of a digital health intervention for smoking cessation among Hispanic/Latino adults in Atlanta, Georgia, United States.

OBJECTIVE: Hispanic/Latino ("H/L") communities experience high levels of tobacco-related morbidity and mortality. Accessible, culturally appropriate interventions are needed to address barriers to smoking cessation. This qualitative study informed the linguistic and cultural adaptation of a mindfulness-based text messaging intervention for smoking cessation among H/L adults. METHODS: Individual interviews were conducted with H/L adults who currently smoke (n = 7), H/L adults who formerly smoked (n = 11), and other key informants (e.g., healthcare providers, medical translators, n = 8) in Atla…

The Effect of Mobile Health Intervention on Prelacteal Feeding Among Mothers in the First Month After Birth in South Ethiopia: A Cluster-Randomized Controlled Trial.

Introduction: Prelacteal feeding, the practice of giving newborns substances other than breast milk within the first few days of life, remains a common yet harmful practice in many low- and middle-income countries, including Ethiopia. No evidence in Ethiopia indicates that mHealth can help improve prelacteal feeding. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of mobile health (mHealth) intervention on reducing prelacteal feeding practices and improving antenatal care (ANC) and postnatal care (PNC) utilization among mothers in South Ethiopia. Methods: A cluster-randomized controlled trial (CRT) wa

Championing Hypertension Remote Monitoring for Equity and Dissemination (CHARMED): A multi-site factorial randomized controlled trial protocol.

INTRODUCTION: We have evidence-based strategies such as remote patient monitoring and digital health tools to improve hypertension outcomes. Still, we lack large-scale studies focusing on disseminating these practices into routine clinical care. This is especially important to study within safety-net healthcare settings that disproportionately care for marginalized patient populations. METHODS: We will conduct a hybrid type 1 implementation trial (2 × 2 factorial design) with 25 safety-net clinics across three of California's public healthcare delivery systems, enrolling 2500 English- and Spa

Comparison of digital behavioral interventions to prevent alcohol misuse among adolescents ages 12 to 19: A randomized clinical trial protocol.

Prevention of alcohol use and misuse among adolescents is a public health priority. A health care visit provides an opportunity for screening for alcohol use and delivery of early interventions. Digital intervention delivery may reduce barriers to implementation in these settings. Herein, we describe the protocol from an ongoing comparative effectiveness study testing digital interventions to prevent escalation of alcohol use among adolescents (ages 12-19) connected to pediatric healthcare. Adolescents screening positive for past-year alcohol use are eligible to participate. Enrolled participa

The Development of a Patient-Centered Digital Health Care Technology for Young Adults in Opioid Use Disorder Treatment: Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND: Young adults, defined as individuals between the ages of 18 and 29 years, drop out of opioid use disorder (OUD) treatment more often than older adults. Premature treatment drop-out substantially increases fatal overdose risk. Self-monitoring through text messaging has been researched extensively among people with OUD to identify drop-out risk factors. Self-monitoring could potentially improve methadone treatment engagement among young adults, who are a population that is both hard to reach and more likely to use technology compared to older adults. Self-monitoring can increase risk…

Effectiveness of Short Message Service Reminders on Timely Pick-up of Antiretroviral Therapy Among Consenting Persons with HIV in Zambézia Province, Mozambique.

A short message service (SMS) intervention was implemented in July 2016 at eight health facilities (HFs) within Zambézia Province, Mozambique. We assessed effectiveness by comparing antiretroviral therapy (ART) pick-up rates among persons with HIV (PWH) eligible for SMS reminders. All adult (≥15 years of age) PWH enrolled in ART services reporting cell phone access were offered SMS. PWH were sent messages 15, 7, and 2 days before scheduled ART pick-up appointments. Using routine data (July 2016-May 2018), mixed-effect logistic regression was used to determine adjusted odds ratios (aORs) of ART

Real-Time Pain Control Education After Outpatient General Surgery: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

INTRODUCTION: Opioid-related morbidity and mortality continue to rise with surgery often serving as the first exposure to opioids for patients. Few interventions focus on real-time education in the outpatient setting while patients are experiencing pain. The effect of short-messaging service (SMS) surveys with real-time opioid-use education (SMSE) and without (SMS) on outpatient postoperative opioid use was studied. METHODS: A double-blinded randomized controlled trial enrolled adults (≥18 y) who underwent outpatient general surgery procedures from January 1, 2020, to January 2, 2021. Partici

Design, Development, and Testing of an App for Dual-Task Assessment and Training Regarding Cognitive-Motor Interference (CMI-APP) in People With Multiple Sclerosis: Multicenter Pilot Study.

BACKGROUND: Dual tasking constitutes a large portion of most activities of daily living; in real-life situations, people need to not only maintain balance and mobility skills, but also perform other cognitive or motor tasks at the same time. Interest toward dual-task training (DTT) is increasing as traditional interventions may not prepare patients to adequately face the challenges of most activities of daily living. These usually involve simultaneous cognitive and motor tasks, and they often show a decline in performance. Cognitive-motor interference (CMI) has been investigated in different n

A prospective cohort study comparing the reactogenicity of trivalent influenza vaccine in pregnant and non-pregnant women.

BACKGROUND: Influenza vaccination during pregnancy can prevent serious illness in expectant mothers and provide protection to newborns; however, historically uptake has been limited due to a number of factors, including safety concerns. Symptomatic complaints are common during pregnancy and may be mistakenly associated with reactions to trivalent influenza vaccine (TIV). To investigate this, we compared post-vaccination events self-reported by pregnant women to events reported by non-pregnant women receiving TIV. METHODS: A prospective cohort of 1,086 pregnant women and 314 non-pregnant femal
