Induced accumulation of Au, Ag and Cu in Brassica napus grown in a mine tailings with the inoculation of Aspergillus niger and the application of two chemical compounds.

This study evaluated the ability of Brassica napus for extracting gold (Au), silver (Ag) and copper (Cu) from a mine tailings, with the inoculation of two Aspergillus niger strains, and the application of ammonium thiocyanate (NH4SCN) or ammonium thiosulfate [(NH4)2S2O3]. After seven weeks of growth inoculated or non-inoculated plants were applied with 1 or 2 g kg-1 of either NH4SCN or (NH4)2S2O3, respectively. Eight days after the application of the chemical compounds, plants were harvested for determining the total dry biomass, and the content of Au, Ag, and Cu in plant organs. Application o

Roles of Sulfur Metabolism and Rhodanese in Detoxification and Anti-Oxidative Stress Functions in the Liver: Responses to Radiation Exposure.

Organisms must confront various environmental stresses. The liver is central to protecting against such stresses in mammals, and it has many detoxification and anti-oxidative stress functions. Radiation is a source of oxidative stress and is known to affect the liver and induce anti-oxidative responses. The detoxification enzyme rhodanese, which is also called thiosulfate sulfurtransferase (TST), has been demonstrated to be induced in the liver in response to radiation. Cyanide detoxification is a function of the liver, and rhodanese is a key enzyme involved in sulfur metabolism in that detoxi

Calciphylaxis and sodium thiosulphate: a glimmer of hope in desperate situation.

BACKGROUND: Calciphylaxis is an uncommon and often under diagnosed condition affecting patients undergoing chronic dialysis. Its pathogenesis is poorly understood. The abnormalities of calcium, phosphate and parathyroid hormone homeostasis leading to vascular calcification and ischaemic skin necrosis are thought to be the central problem. Meticulous wound care and aggressive metabolic control remain the cornerstone of the treatment; however, the overall benefit of these treatment options remains low and mortality and morbidity remain very high. Sodium thiosulphate is an inorganic salt, which i

Enzymatic detoxification of cyanide: clues from Pseudomonas aeruginosa Rhodanese.

Cyanide is a dreaded chemical because of its toxic properties. Although cyanide acts as a general metabolic inhibitor, it is synthesized, excreted and metabolized by hundreds of organisms, including bacteria, algae, fungi, plants, and insects, as a mean to avoid predation or competition. Several cyanide compounds are also produced by industrial activities, resulting in serious environmental pollution. Bioremediation has been exploited as a possible alternative to chemical detoxification of cyanide compounds, and various microbial systems allowing cyanide degradation have been described. Enzyma

[Cyanide poisoning: treatment with hyperoxygenation and sodium thiosulphate].

A 23-year-old man survived a suicide attempt in which he had swallowed 1500 mg potassium cyanide. Initially there were cerebral seizure and marked lactacidosis. Six hours after hospital admission the cyanide blood level was 6 mg/l. The poisoning having at first not been recognized he at that time merely received supportive treatment to counteract the acidosis, as well as assisted ventilation with hyperventilation and hyperoxigenation. Afterwards, sodium thiosulphate was given additionally for 24 h at a dosage of 1 g per hour. The clinical course underlines the great importance of supportive me

Production of thiosulphate during sulphide oxidation by mitochondria of the symbiont-containing bivalve Solemya reidi.

Isolated mitochondria of the bivalve Solemya reidi Bernard oxidize sulphide and couple this oxidation to ADP phosphorylation. The products of mitochondrial sulphide oxidation were analyzed by HPLC using monobromobimane derivatization. Concurrent measurements of respiration were made using sulphide-insensitive oxygen electrodes. S. reidi mitochondria oxidized sulphide exclusively to thiosulphate. The reaction occurred in two steps. One sulphide molecule was first oxidized to sulphite. A second molecule of sulphide was then added oxidatively to form the free product thiosulphate. This oxidation

Binding of metal cyanide complexes to bovine liver rhodanese in the crystalline state.

Bovine liver rhodanese, which catalyzes the transfer of sulfur atoms between a variety of sulfur donor and sulfur acceptor substrates, is inhibited by metal cyanide complexes [Volini, M., Van Sweringen, B., & Chen, F.-Sh. (1978) Arch. Biochem. Biophys. 191, 205-215]. Crystallographic studies are described which reveal the binding mode of four different metal cyanides to bovine liver rhodanese: Na[Au(CN2], K2[Pt(CN)4], K2[Ni(CN)4], and K2[Zn(CN)4]. It appears that these complexes bind at one common site at the entrance of the active site pocket, interacting with the positively charged side chai

Effects of cyanide antidotes used with sodium nitroprusside infusions: sodium thiosulphate and hydroxocobalamin given prophylactically to dogs.

Cyanide antidotes were given to dogs before an infusion of sodium nitroprusside 1.5 mg kg-1 for 1 h. Dogs given thiosulphate 75 mg kg-1 had significantly lower plasma and red cell cyanide concentrations while plasma thiocyanate concentrations were significantly increased in comparison with control. These changes were associated with only minimal disturbance of tissue oxygenation. There was no effect on red cell cyanide or thiocyanate concentrations in dogs treated with hydroxocobalamin 1.5 mg kg-1, but plasma cyanide concentrations were significantly greater than in those receiving no antidote
