The socio-economic and demographic changes that occurred over the past 50 years have dramatically expanded urban areas around the globe, thus bringing urban settlers in closer contact with nature. Ticks have trespassed the limits of forests and grasslands to start inhabiting green spaces within metropolitan areas. Hence, the transmission of pathogens causing tick-borne diseases is an important threat to public health. Using volunteered tick bite reports collected by two Dutch initiatives, here we present a method to model tick bite risk using human exposure and tick hazard predictors. Our meth

Ornithodoros moubata ticks were fed on blood infected with Babesia equi. However, the parasites were quickly cleared as evidenced by the disappearance of B. equi-specific ribosomal RNA from the ticks. We hypothesized that if the Babesia parasite can escape midgut-associated barriers a non-vector tick can become infected with Babesia. To test this hypothesis, B. equi parasite-infected blood from in vitro culture was injected into the haemocoel of ticks. B. equi-specific rRNA was surprisingly detected 45 days after injection even in the eggs. Babesia-free dogs were infested with O. moubata ticks

In May 1993, we collected unfed ticks in Anan, Tokushima Prefecture, Shikoku District, Japan, a highly endemic area of Japanese spotted fever (JSF). We isolated JSF rickettsiae from these ticks by inoculating tick-emulsions into L-929 cells. Of the four genera and seven species of ticks examined, only one larva of Dermacentor taiwanensis Sugimoto yielded a rickettsial isolate. The isolate (DT-1 strain) was found to belong to the serotype common to the causative agent of JSF. This was based on its specific reactivity to mouse antisera and to a monoclonal antibody to JSF rickettsiae from the Shi

Lyme borreliosis is a vector-borne disease transmitted through the bite of ticks infected by Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato group, including B. burgdorferi sensu stricto, B. afzelii, and B. garinii. The goal of the present study was to detect Borrelia species in ticks infesting wild Korean water deer (KWD; Hydropotes inermis Swinhoe), using molecular and genotypic analyses. In total, 48 ticks were collected from KWD, all of which were morphologically identified as Haemaphysalis longicornis Neumann that is dominant in Korea. Nested PCR was performed to detect the Borrelia-specific 5S (rrf)-23S

Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever (CCHF) virus was inoculated into West African sheep that were simultaneously infested with adult Hyalomma truncatum ticks. Certain sheep developed a viraemia and antibodies, indicating virus infection and replication; however, the length and magnitude of the viraemia and serological responses corresponded to the animals' immunological status. Tick attachment and feeding was not influenced by sheep infection. CCHF virus infection was acquired by 11-33% of female and 0-60% of male ticks. Infection in the ticks did not influence their feeding success, as judged by

Amblyomma species are non-endemic ticks in Egypt, which have been recorded from imported animals. This study was carried out in 2022 to monitor Amblyomma spp. from dromedary camels, cattle, and snakes in Egypt. During this study, 400 camels, 200 cattle, and two snakes (Pythonidae) were inspected for tick infestation. Collected specimens were identified based on morphological characters and confirmed by phylogenetic analysis of the 12S rRNA gene. Camels were infested by adult specimens of Amblyomma variegatum and Amblyomma lepidum, but no Amblyomma spp. were collected from cattle. Amblyomma var

Infestation by immature Ixodes dammini and infection by Borrelia burgdorferi of the white-footed mouse Peromyscus leucopus were studied in Castle Rock State Park in northwestern Illinois during June-October 1990. Prevalence and intensity of infestation of larvae on mice were highest in August with a smaller peak in early June. The distribution of larvae on mice was highly aggregated during each of the sampling periods. Aggregation appears to be the result of a series of nonrandom successful attachments by single larvae, rather than of simultaneous attachment by clumps of larvae. Infection rate

The life cycle of Ixodes luciae was evaluated for five consecutive generations in the laboratory. Wild mice Calomys callosus and laboratory rats Rattus norvegicus were used as hosts for larvae and nymphs. For adult ticks, opossums Didelphis aurita were used as hosts. Off-host developmental periods were observed in an incubator at 27 degrees C and 95% RH. The life cycle of I. luciae lasted 95-97 days, excluding prefeeding periods. C. callosus, one of the natural host species for I. luciae immature stages, was shown to be much more suitable than the artificial host R. norvegicus. Significantly (

From May 2007 to March 2008, blood samples were collected from 92 healthy dogs living in 21 households (17 farms in rural area, and 4 homes in urban area) in 6 counties of the State of Espírito Santo, southeastern Brazil. In addition, ticks were collected from these dogs. A mean of 4.4+/-3.0 dogs (range: 1-12) were sampled per household; 78 and 14 dogs were from rural and urban areas, respectively. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) designed to amplify fragments of the 18S rDNA gene of Babesia spp or Hepatozoon spp revealed amplicons of the expected size in 20 (21.7%) dogs for Babesia, and 54 (58

BACKGROUND: Both Simparica® and Simparica TRIO® chewable tablets are efficacious within 12 h against existing Ixodes scapularis infestations and within 24 h against re-infestations for 1 month. It is therefore expected that treatment with either product prevents Lyme infections due to their efficacy against I. scapularis ticks before the anticipated transmission of Borrelia burgdorferi by infected ticks.
METHODS: In total, four laboratory studies were conducted in which dogs were randomly allocated to two treatment groups of 10 dogs each. On day 0, dogs were either administered a placebo trea

Ixodes scapularis ticks are expanding their range in parts of northeastern North America, bringing with them pathogens of public health concern. While rodents like the white-footed mouse, Peromyscus leucopus, are considered the primary reservoir of many emerging tick-borne pathogens, the contribution of birds, as alternative hosts and reservoirs, to local transmission cycles has not yet been firmly established. From 2016 to 2018, we collected host-seeking ticks and examined rodent and bird hosts for ticks at 48 sites in a park where blacklegged ticks are established in Quebec, Canada, in order

The capability of imidacloprid 10% + flumethrin 4.5% (Seresto®) collars to prevent transmission of Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato (Bbsl) and Anaplasma phagocytophilum (Ap) by naturally infected ticks was evaluated in two studies with 44 dogs. In each study, one group served as non-treated control, whereas the other groups were treated with the Seresto® collar. All dogs were exposed to naturally Bbsl- and Ap-infected hard ticks (Ixodes ricinus, Ixodes scapularis). In study 1, tick infestation was performed on study day (SD) 63 (2 months post-treatment [p.t.]); in study 2, it was performed on S

Rio Grande do Sul is the southernmost state of Brazil, bordering Uruguay. Clinical cases of spotted fever group (SFG) rickettsiosis were recently reported in Rio Grande do Sul. None of these cases was lethal, and all were confirmed by seroconversion to R. rickettsii antigens. Because serological cross-reactions are well known to occur between different SFG agents, the SFG agent responsible for the clinical cases remains unknown in Rio Grande do Sul, where no rickettsial agent is known to infect ticks. During 2013-2014, ticks and blood sera samples were collected from domestic dogs and wild sma

A randomized, blinded, negative controlled study was conducted to determine whether treatment with afoxolaner (NexGard®, Merial, Inc.) would prevent the transmission of Borrelia burgdorferi to dogs by wild caught Ixodes scapularis ticks. Twenty healthy dogs were randomly assigned to two groups of ten dogs each. Ten dogs were treated orally on Day 0 at a dose near the minimum recommended dose of afoxolaner of 2.5mg/kg (actual doses 2.5-3.1mg/kg) and ten control dogs were not treated. On Day 28, each dog was infested with approximately 50 adult unfed wild caught I. scapularis that had a 67% B. b

The effects of vaccination with the Bm 86 vaccine TickGARD(PLUS) against infestation with cattle tick (Boophilus microplus) and of holding cattle on a feedpad until 09:00 hours after the morning milking was tested on 40 mid lactation Holstein cattle using a factorial design. Vaccination resulted in a 56% reduction in tick numbers in the field over one generation, and a 72% reduction in laboratory measures of the reproductive efficiency of ticks. The liveweight gain of vaccinated cattle over 27 weeks was 18.6 kg higher than that of controls, and vaccinated cattle tended to have lower somatic ce

Controlling populations of Ixodes ticks has emerged as a core strategy for reducing human exposure to tick-borne infections. Several means of reducing the size of the tick population using chemical and biological acaricides show promise in field trials and are frequently used commercially in North America and Europe. The Tick Project (TTP) assessed whether the use of two commercially available methods of reducing the abundance of host-seeking blacklegged ticks (Ixodes scapularis) reduced encounters with ticks and reported cases of tick-borne disease in humans and their outdoor pets. Residentia

In camels and their infesting ectoparasites, specific detection of pathogenic Anaplasma platys and genetically related strains (A. platys-like strains) remains problematic. This requires sequencing of the hemi-nested PCR products specific to A. platys and related strains. In this study, a PCR/RFLP method, earlier developed for specific detection of A. platys-like strains in animal species other than camels, was adapted in order to subtype A. platys-like strains isolated from camels and their ticks and to differentiate them from pathogenic A. platys without going through a sequencing step. This

Ticks are known to harbor a great diversity of bacterial agents with potential human and animal health implications. This study investigated the occurrence of Rickettsia and Bartonella spp. in ticks collected from stray cats in the Jerusalem District. Between March 2021 and October 2024, 5002 stray cats were examined, and 330 ticks were collected from 165 infested individuals (3.3%). Three tick species were detected, Rhipicephalus turanicus (n = 224), Haemaphysalis adleri (n = 99), and Rhipicephalus rutilus (n = 7). Rickettsia massiliae-DNA was detected in 31% of the ticks. Moreover, Bartonell
