The Diagnosis of Spontaneous Coronary Artery Dissection by Optical Coherence Tomography.

Spontaneous coronary artery dissection (SCAD) is rare, but it frequently presents as acute myocardial infarction. It is frequently fatal and most cases are diagnosed at autopsy. We herein present the case of a 65-year-old woman with ST-elevation and myocardial infarction due to SCAD. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) helped us to confirm the diagnosis. The information on the intravascular morphology provided by OCT imaging is much more detailed in comparison to that provided by coronary angiography (CAG) and intravascular ultrasound (IVUS).

Optical coherence tomography findings in a patient with type 1 sialidosis.

Type 1 sialidosis is a metabolic storage disorder characterised by the accumulation of sialylated oligosaccharides. The condition is also known as macular cherry-red spot and myoclonus syndrome due to the characteristic macular appearance in affected individuals. This case outlines the presentation of a patient with type 1 sialidosis, including ophthalmological assessment with retinal photography and spectral domain optical coherence tomography (OCT). OCT scans showed thickening of the perimacular and peripapillary retinal nerve fibre layer, thought to be due to the abnormal accumulation of me

Optical coherence tomography platforms and parameters for glaucoma diagnosis and progression.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Optical coherence tomography (OCT) aids in the diagnosis and long-term monitoring of various ocular diseases, including glaucoma. Initially, the retinal nerve fiber layer was the only OCT structural parameter used in glaucoma. Subsequent research has resulted in more retinal and optic nerve head parameters. In addition, OCT is being investigated for its ability to assess ocular hemodynamics. This review summarizes these spectral domain-optical coherence tomography (SDOCT) parameters in the context of glaucoma. RECENT FINDINGS: Several new SDOCT retinal nerve fiber layer, op

Spectral-Domain Optical Coherence Tomography Angiography of Central Retinal Artery Occlusion.

The authors report the use of optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) to determine retinal blood flow in a patient with central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO). Spectral-domain OCTA (SD-OCTA) was performed on an eye with CRAO. En face vascular images were constructed using an optical microangiography algorithm. The retinal vasculature was clearly imaged with high fidelity; areas of perfused retina were identified with exquisite detail. This study supports use of OCTA in diagnosing and monitoring CRAOs. Future research is warranted to recognize full potential of this imaging modality. [

Biometry, optical coherence tomography, and further clinical observations in Knobloch syndrome.

PURPOSE: Knobloch syndrome is a pathognomonic vitreo-retinopathy that includes zonular weakness, high myopia, and a distinct fundus appearance with tessellation out of proportion to the degree of myopia. Whether myopia in Knobloch syndrome is axial or lenticular is unclear. Also not known are the optical coherence tomography (OCT) correlates to the distinct fundus appearance. In this study we assess cycloplegic refraction, biometry, and macular spectral domain (SD) OCT in children with Knobloch syndrome. METHODS: A retrospective case series of seven children (12 eyes) with Knobloch syndrome.

Optical Coherence Tomography and Biometry in High Myopia with Tilted Disc.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to compare retinal thickness and biometric parameters between highly myopic eyes with and without tilted optic discs. METHODS: A total of 60 eyes from 60 highly myopic individuals (defined as a mean spherical equivalent refraction of -6.00 D or greater and axial length ≥26 mm) underwent detailed ophthalmic examination. Twenty-one eyes (13 females and 8 males; mean age: 29 ± 7 years) with tilted optic discs were recruited and compared with 39 eyes (23 females and 16 males; mean age: 28 ± 6 years) of control subjects without tilted optic discs using spectr

A Focal Chorioretinal Bartonella Lesion Analyzed by Optical Coherence Tomography Angiography.

Neovascularization may be associated with cat-scratch neuroretinitis in the absence of retinal vascular occlusion. Bartonella organisms establish an intimate relationship with the vascular endothelium, causing angioproliferative lesions, which might represent a dedicated pathogenic strategy for expanding the bacterial host cell habitat. In the eye, pathological angiogenesis caused by Bartonella has been described as peripapillary or macular choroidal neovascularization, but the presence of neovascularization within foci of chorioretinitis has never before been reported. The authors present a c

Optical coherence tomography system requirements for clinical diagnostic middle ear imaging.

Noninvasive middle ear imaging using optical coherence tomography (OCT) presents some unique challenges for real-time, clinical use in humans. We present results from a two-dimensional/three-dimensional OCT system built to assess the imaging requirements of clinical middle ear imaging, and the technical challenges associated with them. These include the need to work at a low numerical aperture, the deleterious effects of transtympanic imaging on image quality at the ossicles, sensitivity requirements for clinical fidelity of images at real-time rates, and the high dynamic-range requirements of

Optical coherence tomography parameters in patients with photosensitive juvenile myoclonic epilepsy.

PURPOSE: Juvenile myoclonic epilepsy (JME) is commonly associated with photoparoxysmal response (PPR) with a reported prevalence of 25-42%. In this study, we aim to explore the relationship between the PPR and Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) parameters in order to determine whether optic nerve fiber layer or other structural differences have a pathophysiological role of photosensitivity in patients with JME. METHODS: We studied 53 consecutive patients with Juvenile myoclonic epilepsy (JME) at our outpatient department. The interictal electroencephalogram (EEG) findings for each patient wer

Neuromyelitis optica and multiple sclerosis: Seeing differences through optical coherence tomography.

Neuromyelitis optica (NMO) is an inflammatory autoimmune disease of the central nervous system that preferentially targets the optic nerves and spinal cord. The clinical presentation may suggest multiple sclerosis (MS), but a highly specific serum autoantibody against the astrocytic water channel aquaporin-4 present in up to 80% of NMO patients enables distinction from MS. Optic neuritis may occur in either condition resulting in neuro-anatomical retinal changes. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) has become a useful tool for analyzing retinal damage both in MS and NMO. Numerous studies showed

Optical Coherence Tomography in Cultivated Limbal Epithelial Stem Cell Transplantation Surgery.

PURPOSE: Cultivated limbal epithelial stem cell transplantation (CLET) is a surgical approach reserved for severe stem cell deficiency and anterior segment pathology. The recipient cornea typically displays a highly vascularized pannus that must be dissected before graft placement. Extensive pannus dissection, however, can result in corneal thinning and increase the risk of ectasia and ultimately, of perforation. We aimed to examine the value of anterior segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT) intraoperatively during pannus resection and long-term postoperative follow-up of CLET surgery.

Characterizing the lacrimal punctal region using anterior segment optical coherence tomography.

PURPOSE: Abnormalities of lacrimal punctum size and morphology probably contribute to excess tearing, with significant effects on quality-of-life for affected individuals. Our current understanding of normal punctal morphology originates from ex vivo studies, which are unlikely to capture the true nature of the living punctum. This study used enhanced depth anterior segment optical coherence tomography (OCT) to give improved characterization and understanding of lacrimal punctal structure. METHODS: Qualitative and quantitative assessments were performed on spectral domain OCT images collected
