Periodontal disease (PD) is a complex and infectious illness that begins with a disruption of bacterial homeostasis. This disease induces a host inflammatory response, leading to damage of the soft and connective tooth-supporting tissues. Moreover, in advanced cases, it can contribute to tooth loss. The aetiological factors of PDs have been widely researched, but the pathogenesis of PD has still not been totally clarified. There are a number of factors that have an effect on the aetiology and pathogenesis of PD. It is purported that microbiological, genetic susceptibility and lifestyle can det…

Loss of anterior maxillary teeth always results in bone resorption and loss of interdental papillae, and the resorption makes a single tooth replacement by a dental implant very difficult. When infections have been present and the patient's history shows previous surgery at the apex of the root, bone destruction is substantial, which results in an increased resorption defect, thereby further increasing the aesthetic and prosthetic problems. This paper describes the steps necessary for implant surgery and the prosthetics; a brief summary is provided. The quality and quantity of bone, along with

The therapy of dilacerated permanent anterior teeth usually involves surgically removing the tooth. Subsequently, orthodontic methods for closing the space or keeping it open are preferred until the patient reaches an age when definitive implantological or prosthetic treatments may be used. Anterior tooth transplantation should be considered as an alternative to surgically extracting the tooth. This study describes a period of investigation covering 3 years during which neither replacement resorption nor inflammatory resorption was diagnosed in the five transplanted teeth. The clinical tooth m

The restoration of teeth that have been compromised by loss of crown and radicular structure due to caries, fractures, root resorption or iatrogenic lesions could result in the violation of the biologic width, with consequent gingival inflammation, loss of attachment, and alveolar bone loss. It is essential in these cases to obtain an adequate enough portion of the tooth structure to allow for a restoration that respects the biologic width. This can be achieved using a procedure that allows for the extrusion of the root in a single step, thereby shifting the compromised site from subgingival t

A technique that may effectively create a greater volume of available hard and soft tissue in the vertical plane without surgical intervention is reported and explained. Limitations of the forced eruption are also discussed. Creating an esthetic implant-supported restoration is a challenge in patients who have alveolar resorption and/or attachment loss, especially when they present with a high smile line. Many methods to augment this loss of tissue have been proposed; most involve surgical procedures to add bone or bone substitutes to compensate for the loss of alveolar tissue. This case repor

The teeth are unique in that they provide a direct pathway for spread of infection into surrounding osseous and soft tissue structures. Periodontal disease is the most common cause of tooth loss worldwide, referring to infection of the supporting structures of the tooth, principally the gingiva, periodontal ligament, cementum, and alveolar bone. Periapical disease refers to an infectious or inflammatory process centered at the root apex of the tooth, usually occurring when deep caries infect the pulp chamber and root canals. We review the pathogenesis, clinical features, and radiographic findi…

Invasive cervical resorption (ICR) is a relatively uncommon form of external resorption, which may occur in any tooth in the permanent dentition. Characterized by its cervical location and invasive nature, this resorptive process leads to progressive and usually destructive loss of the tooth structure, the clinical features of which often resemble internal resorption ("pink tooth"). This article describes a case report of ICR and its management. The salient features were a large resorptive defect and localized fibrous in-growth located almost wholly on the cervicolabial aspect of the maxillary

Dental caries and periodontal disease are the most common afflictions of the tooth. These infectious diseases cause considerable pain and discomfort and ultimately loss of the tooth. Apart from local effects, these infections may extend beyond natural barriers and result in complications that can vary in severity from the excruciating pain of acute pulpitis to life-threatening infections of the deep fascial spaces of the head and neck. In this article, the clinical and pathologic features of dental caries, pulpitis, periapical abscess, pericoronitis, and periodontal infections are discussed as

OBJECTIVE: Apply a case-control retrospective analysis to assess possible differences in the prevalence of endodontically treated teeth in p … no significant association between DM appearance and the number of endodontically treated teeth or tooth loss when compared with NDM.
CLINICAL RELEVANCE: This suggests that in periodontitis patients DM appears not to be a risk factor influencing the degree of tooth decay necessitating endodontic intervention, nor does it seem to contribute to an increased …

Evidence suggests that patients suffer the painful symptoms of dentine hypersensitivity when dentine is exposed and the dentinal tubule system is opened to the oral cavity to allow stimuli to trigger a neural response in the pulp via a hydrodynamic mechanism. The processes needed to localise lesions of dentine hypersensitivity include loss of enamel and/or gingival recession. Whilst tooth brushing with or without toothpaste appears to cause minimal wear to enamel (in the absence of acids), circumstantial evidence implicates tooth brushing with gingival recession and exposure of dentine. Other

The koala is one of Australia's most highly specialized folivores with a diet exclusively of eucalyptus leaves to provide all nutritive needs and therefore requires to be free of oral disease as they are dependent on good dentition for optimal health and quality of life. We developed an oral examination methodology based on protocols for companion animals and human dentistry to chart the oral health of koalas. Thirty free-ranging koalas from South-East Queensland, Australia were examined for general body and oral health. Inspection of the oral cavity was conducted for the presence or absence o

Background and Clinical Significance: Advanced periodontitis with severe vertical bone loss and grade III mobility is usually managed by extraction and implant placement. Digital workflows and modern regenerative techniques have opened the possibility of preserving teeth that would traditionally be considered for extraction. This report describes a digitally guided modified intentional replantation (MIR) protocol applied to a maxillary tooth with severe periodontal involvement and unfavourable prognosis. Case Presentation: A 68-year-old male, non-smoker, with a history of heart transplantation

The vibration characteristics of a maxillary central incisor were investigated by using the finite element method (FEM) according to nonlinear behavior of the human periodontal ligament (PDL). The effect of alveolar bone loss was also studied to obtain the relationship between the vibration property of the tooth in the periodontal system and the level of periodontal attachment for assessing the condition of periodontium. Three-dimensional (3D) finite element model of the tooth was constructed using CT image-reconstruction, and the elastic face foundation constraint was applied to the surface o

Infantile congenital agranulocytosis or Kostmann syndrome is a rare hereditary kind of severe neutropenia. The typical symptoms, which appear since the first days of life, are abscesses located on various parts of the body: ear, cutis, lung and oral cavity. These abscesses are due to an almost total disimmunity typical of the neutropenia. The aim of this article is to describe the most typical signs of this pathology in the oral cavity, reporting a case observed in our department in Florence, Italy. On the basis of the personally observed case and of the review of the literature, it is possibl

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to introduce a minimally invasive bone splitting technique which is suitable for cases with missing anterior teeth and obvious depression of alveolar bone in labial side, and to evaluate its clinical results.
METHODS: Minimally invasive bone splitting technique was used in 8 healthy adults with bone defects in the aesthetic zone. The labial alveolar bone incisions were confined around the bone defects which were smaller than traditional incisions. The other procedures were the same as conventional bone splitting technique. Cone-beam CT (CBCT) for missing
