Maxillary distraction is increasingly used for the correction of severe maxillary retrusion in patients with cleft lip and palate. However, control of the maxillary movement is difficult, and the need to wear visible distractors for a long period of time causes psychosocial problems. A two-stage surgical approach consisting of maxillary distraction and mandibular setback was developed to overcome these problems. In this study, changes in maxillofacial morphology and velopharyngeal function were examined in 22 patients with cleft lip and palate who underwent this two-stage approach. Lateral cep

BACKGROUND: Dental erosions are determined by a mechanism involving increased oral acidity. Gastro-esophageal reflux disease (GERD) represents the pathological reflux of gastric content into the oral cavity, affecting the hard dental tissues integrity, with a major risk of advanced tooth wear.
AIM: This study aims to investigate the prevalence of dental erosions in GERD patients, in order to obtain a basis for therapeutic strategies and specific prophylactic measures.
METHODS: We incorporated a mandatory dental consultation in the therapeutic protocol of GERD patients. The study was carried

The aim of this in vitro study was to determine the influence of remineralisation time on rehardening of surface-softened enamel after citric acid erosion. Seven groups of 13 samples of human enamel were eroded in 0.3% citric acid at pH 3.2 for 2 h followed by profilometric measurements. Individual groups of specimens were placed in artificial saliva for 1, 2, 4, 6, 9 or 24 h. A control group was placed in isotonic saline for 24 h. After new profilometric measurements samples were ultrasonicated stepwise up to 480 s with profilometric measurements performed at 5, 30, 120, 240 and 480 s to meas

To study the relationship between aging and alveolar bone loss, the periodontia of young (12-week-old) and aged (94-week-old) C57B1/6 Nia mice were compared, giving special attention to the alveolar bone. The tibiae were also examined to distinguish local from systemic bone changes. The mean area of interproximal bone between the first and second mandibular molars was significantly less in the aged mice than in the young mice. While there was no difference in the distance from the cementoenamel junction (CEJ) to the alveolar crest, the width of the interproximal bone was narrower in the aged a

BACKGROUND: This report presents a multidisciplinary approach combining orthodontic clear aligners and minimally invasive ceramic laminate veneers in the esthetic zone.
METHODS: The patient expressed dissatisfaction with her smile due to the overlap of the left central incisor over the right central incisor, mild incisal wear, and the shade of her teeth. The treatment plan involved the use of clear aligners to improve the alignment of the anterior teeth, followed by minimally invasive tooth preparations to accommodate ultrathin ceramic laminate veneers. Clear aligners have become a popular tr

Estimating adult age at death in skeletal remains is problematic, particularly in older adults. Molar wear is arguably the most reliable ageing technique for palaeopopulations, but many older adult skeletons have lost their molar teeth ante mortem, precluding its application. Resorption of the alveolar process occurs following tooth loss, and this appears to continue for a prolonged period. The current work investigates the relationship of this process to individual age in a nineteenth century AD European archaeological skeletal series of known age at death (N = 92 individuals), and discusses

Attrition and wear of tooth surface occur with aging and result in loss of enamel, with exposure and histological changes in dentin. Dealing with attrited teeth and restoration of the lost tissue are clinically challenging. The main objective of this study is to characterize the exposed transparent dentin in the occlusal surface of attrited teeth by optical coherence tomography (OCT). Naturally attrited, extracted human teeth with occlusal-transparent dentin were investigated in comparison to sound and carious teeth. The teeth were subjected to OCT imaging and then cross-sectioned and polished

Methamphethamine (TIK) is a highly addictive drug that acts as a stimulant for the central nervous system. It increases wakefulness and physical activity and can cause cardiac dysrhythmias, hypertension, hallucinations and violent behavior. Dental patients abusing methamphetamine often present with poor oral hygiene, xerostomia, rampant caries ("meth mouth") and excessive tooth wear. Management of these conditions is often challenging. A 24-year-old Caucasian man presented with severe dental pain, halitosis and self-reported poor dental appearance. A comprehensive examination including his med

OBJECTIVE: The reduced use of sugars-containing (SC) liquid medicines has increased the use of other dose forms, potentially resulting in more widespread dental effects, including tooth wear. The aim of this study was to assess the erosive potential of 97 paediatric medicines in vitro.
METHODS: The study took the form of in vitro measurement of endogenous pH and titratable acidity (mmol). Endogenous pH was measured using a pH meter, followed by titration to pH 7.0 with 0.1-M NaOH.
RESULTS: Overall, 55 (57%) formulations had an endogenous pH of < 5.5. The mean (+/- SD) endogenous pH and titra

The amelogenin proteins regulate enamel mineral formation in the developing tooth. The human AMELX gene, which encodes the amelogenin proteins, is located within an intron of the Arhgap 6 gene. ARHGAP 6 encodes a Rho GAP, which regulates activity of Rho A, a small G protein involved in intracellular signal transduction. Mice were generated in which the entire ARHGAP 6 gene was deleted by Cre-mediated recombination, which also removed the nested Amel X gene. Enamel from these mice appeared chalky white, and the molars showed excessive wear. The enamel layer was hypoplastic and non-prismatic, wh

INTRODUCTION: The nasopalatine duct cyst (NPDC) is the most frequent nonodontogenic cyst of the jaws and can be misinterpreted as an apical lesion of endodontic origin.
METHODS: In the first case, a 17-year-old male patient was referred because of a pressure sensation in the anterior maxilla. The teeth #7, #8, #10, and #11 responded to cold sensitivity testing, and on tooth #9 an endodontic treatment had been performed 3 years ago. Only periapical radiographs had been taken, and a radicular cyst was suspected. In the second case, a 42-year-old man reported inconvenience wearing his upper remo

Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) disease is a hereditary debilitating progressive muscular atrophy and sensory neuropathy of the distal extremities. CMT is usually non-life threatening. Signs of the disease usually present in childhood or in young adulthood and the level of disability can be variable within and between families. Research addressing specific psychosocial and emotional issues faced by individuals with CMT is limited. Fourteen adults with a clinical and/or molecular diagnosis of CMT (ages 32--74 years) consented to an audio taped interview. The format of the interview was based around a

The sample of the less common hominoid species at Paşalar, Kenyapithecus kizili, is characterized by a number of unusual attributes. All ten of the upper central incisors attributed to this species show a distinct, identical pattern of two linear enamel hypoplasias. The two hypoplasias occur on the same portion of the labial crown face, revealing that the two hypoplasia-causing events occurred at the same stage of development in all individuals. The morphology of the two hypoplasias and the amount of time between them, as determined by both their separation and counts of perikymata, are also t

Ectodermal dysplasia, in all its varieties, occurs in approximately 1 in every 100,000 live births. Depending on the variety, hypohidrosis, hypotrichosis, hypodontia, oligodontia, and/or anodontia may be exhibited. Few long-term clinical reports exist. This report follows the development, growth, and initial treatment of a 10-year-old patient with ectodermal dysplasia and his subsequent oral rehabilitation 20 years later.
