Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation does not influence immunological HL-60 cells and neuronal PC12 cells.

BACKGROUND: Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a non-invasive method used in medical applications such as brain mapping or as a therapeutic tool in neurological and psychiatric disorders because it can stimulate defined regions of the brain without anaesthesia. METHODS: The action of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) on HL-60 and PC12 cells has been investigated. The cells have been stimulated in vitro with different number of pulses (75 - 1250), different intensities (10, 20 and 40%) and different frequencies (0.25, 1 and 10 Hz) by using a double coil (2x70 mm) conn…

Evaluation of periodic leg movements and associated transcranial magnetic stimulation parameters in restless legs syndrome.

Restless legs syndrome (RLS), a sensorimotor disorder characterized by unpleasant sensations commonly localized in the legs, is frequently associated with periodic limb movements (PLMs) during sleep. We investigated the role of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and cortical silent period (CSP) duration as diagnostic and monitoring tools in 20 patients with primary RLS before and after 1 month of treatment and also studied 15 normal age- and gender-matched subjects. Polysomnographic assessment was undertaken and the PLM index determined in 17 of the 20 patients. We also studied the correl…

Motor and visual cortical excitability in migraineurs patients with or without aura: transcranial magnetic stimulation.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE OF STUDY: Controversy surrounds measures of visual and motor cortical excitability in migraineurs: some authors report that interictal excitability is increased, others decreased. The aim of this work was to provide further evidence about motor and visual cortical excitability in migraineurs between attacks. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Twenty-eight migraineurs patients, 18 with aura and 10 patients without aura and 20 healthy right-handed, age and sex matched volunteers were included in the study. Each subject underwent transcranial magnetic stimulation and was submitted to t…

Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation for the treatment of major depressive disorder: an evidence-based analysis.

OBJECTIVE: This review was conducted to assess the effectiveness of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) in the treatment of major depressive disorder (MDD). THE TECHNOLOGY: rTMS is a noninvasive way to stimulate nerve cells in areas of the brain. During rTMS, an electrical current passes through a wire coil placed over the scalp. The current induces a magnetic field that produces an electrical field in the brain that then causes nerve cells to depolarize, resulting in the stimulation or disruption of brain activity. Researchers have investigated rTMS as an option to treat MDD,…

Motor cortex activation by transcranial magnetic stimulation in ataxia patients depends on the genetic defect.

In patients with degenerative ataxia, various abnormalities in motor cortex activation by transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) have been observed, including a reduction of intracortical facilitation and a lengthening of the silent period. However, the groups of patients examined in previous studies were heterogeneous, involving patients with autosomal-dominant and idiopathic cerebellar ataxia, and showing different clinical features. The aim of our present study was to investigate whether differences in motor cortex activation by TMS could be observed in genetically defined subtypes of dege…

[Effect of slow repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation on depression in patients with Parkinson 's disease].

Parkinson's disease (PD), that has usually been associated with movement disorders, is also associated with depression in about 40% of patients [9]. Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a new non-invasive technique for direct stimulation of the cerebral cortical neurons [1]. Several open studies have shown that repetitive TMS (rTMS) at both rapid (rapid rTMSi: > 1 Hz) and low frequencies (slow rTMSi: < 1 Hz) may have antidepressant action [2-6]. The study included 8 patients diagnosed as PD fulfilling the DSM-IV criteria for major depression (5 patients) and dysthymia (3 patients). Magne…

Examination of motor output pathways in patients with corticobasal ganglionic degeneration using transcranial magnetic stimulation.

The alien hand sign (AHS) is often encountered in patients with corticobasal ganglionic degeneration (CBGD), revealing a unilateral dysfunction of the motor system of unknown pathophysiology. We examined the possibility of an abnormal cortical representation of hand muscles in 10 patients with probable CBGD and a prominent AHS. Cortical maps were obtained from the responses to magnetic stimuli applied with a figure of eight coil at an intensity of 110% above motor threshold. For comparison, the same study was carried out in 10 normal volunteers, eight patients with Parkinson's disease and eigh

Orally administered atropine enhances motor cortex excitability: a transcranial magnetic stimulation study in human subjects.

Oral application of atropine was used to test if a modulation of cholinergic neurotransmission changed motor excitability. Healthy volunteers received either 1 or 2 mg atropine. Paired transcranial magnetic stimulation was used to study intracortical inhibition and intracortical facilitation before, 1 h and 24 h after ingestion of atropine. In addition, the silent period, motor threshold, F wave and motor response amplitudes were measured. The 1 mg dose of atropine induced a loss of intracortical inhibition, the 2 mg dose produced an intracortical disinhibition and enhanced intracortical facil…

New method to measure central motor conduction time using transcranial magnetic stimulation and T-response.

Measuring central motor conduction time (CMCT) is one of the useful methods to detect an impaired level of the spinal segment in cervical my … l cord potentials which were recorded from the epidural space on the C3-4 vertebral level following transcranial magnetic stimulation. The CMCT of both the Biceps and ADM was delayed in all cases of C1-2 cord compression. In patients with cord compression on the C3-4 level, two of four patients showed CMCT prolongation in Biceps. The prolongation of CMCT was observed only in ADM i …

Hyperventilation and transcranial magnetic stimulation: two methods of activation of epileptiform EEG activity in comparison.

In a prospective study, we compared the established method for an activation of epileptiform activity in EEG, hyperventilation (HV), with the recently presented new activational technique of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) in 10 patients with drug-resistant partial epilepsies. Long-term EEG recordings included subdural electrodes in the course of presurgical evaluation. Epileptiform activity was evaluated visually 500 s before, during, and 500 s after stimulation, and the results were compared statistically. TMS was not better than HV: HV caused an activation of the epileptogenic foci …

Investigating the effects of transcutaneous vagus nerve stimulation on motor cortex excitability and inhibition through paired-pulse transcranial magnetic stimulation.

Transcutaneous Vagus Nerve stimulation (tVNS) has been proposed as a treatment for refining GABAergic transmission. While the effects of tVNS on behavioral performance in inhibitory control tasks have been already demonstrated, neurophysiological studies investigating its effects on GABA-mediated inhibition in the motor cortex provided contrasting findings. Concurrently, the influence of participants' sex and state conditions remains unexplored. Here we applied single- and paired-pulse TMS to the right or left primary motor cortex in two groups of participants. We measured corticospinal excita

Neuro-cardiac-guided transcranial magnetic stimulation: Unveiling the modulatory effects of low-frequency and high-frequency stimulation on heart rate.

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is pivotal in the field of major depressive disorder treatment. Due to its unsatisfied response rate, an increasing number of researchers have turned their attention towards optimizing TMS site localization. Since the influence of TMS in reducing heart rate (HR) offers insights into its regulatory impact on the autonomic nervous system, a novel approach, called neurocardiac-guided TMS (NCG-TMS), has been proposed to pinpoint the brain region eliciting the maximal individual reduction in HR as a personalized optimal stimulation target. The present study i…

Tackling social anxiety with targeted brain stimulation: investigating the effects of transcranial static magnetic field stimulation on self-focused attention.

Previous studies suggested that self-focused attention (SFA), implicated in social anxiety disorder (SAD), correlates with heightened activity in the right frontopolar area (rFPA), which is the right prefrontal cortex just behind the forehead. Transcranial static magnetic field stimulation (tSMS) is a non-invasive brain stimulation method capable of temporarily suppressing brain function beneath the magnet. We explored whether tSMS on individuals with tendencies toward SAD elicited (1) suppressing rFPA activation during the resting-state and (2) reducing SFA during a subsequent speech task. Tw

Cerebellar transcranial magnetic stimulation in psychotic disorders: intermittent, continuous, and sham theta-burst stimulation on time perception and symptom severity.

BACKGROUND: The cerebellum contributes to the precise timing of non-motor and motor functions, and cerebellum abnormalities have been implicated in psychosis pathophysiology. In this study, we explored the effects of cerebellar theta burst stimulation (TBS), an efficient transcranial magnetic stimulation protocol, on temporal discrimination and self-reported mood and psychotic symptoms. METHODS: We conducted a case-crossover study in which patients with psychosis (schizophrenias, schizoaffective disorders, or bipolar disorders with psychotic features) were assigned to three sessions of TBS to…

[Inductance calculation method for transcranial magnetic stimulation figure-8 coils Accounting for spatial mutual inductance].

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is widely used in the treatment of neuropsychiatric disorders, and the stimulation coil constitutes a critical component of TMS devices. Existing inductance calculations for figure-8 coils suffer from three notable shortcomings: they are mostly limited to single-layer geometries, they still rely on elliptic integrals, and they systematically overlook spatial mutual coupling among windings. To address these issues, we propose a high-precision analytical method that accommodates both flat spiral and multi-layer stacked coil configurations. Instead of adopt…

Transcranial magnetic stimulation recalibrates levodopa response by attenuating neuroinflammation and glial reactivity in experimental parkinsonism.

In experimental models of Parkinson's disease (PD), chronic Levodopa (L-DOPA) induces abnormal involuntary movements (AIMs) similar to L-DOPA-induced dyskinesias (LIDs) and psychiatric disturbances associated with a lack of homeostatic synaptic downscaling in striatal spiny projection neurons (SPNs) and dysfunctional neuroimmune responses. Continuous Theta-Burst Stimulation (cTBS), a transcranial magnetic stimulation protocol that inhibits neuronal activity, is a promising non-invasive brain stimulation treatment for LIDs and addiction, whose mechanisms are still unclear. In this study, we inv…
