Lesson of the month: Acute pancreatitis due to hypertriglyceridaemia in a transgender woman: a complication of high-dose oral oestrogen therapy?

Acute pancreatitis (AP) is a medical emergency associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Hypertriglyceridaemia is a well-established but often neglected cause of AP, associated with delayed diagnosis and worse outcome than other more common causes of AP. Although oestrogen-induced hypertriglyceridaemia is known to be a rare cause of AP in females, it is much less well-recognised in biological males. We report the case of a 52-year-old transgender woman receiving high-dose oral oestrogen therapy who was admitted with abdominal pain and found to have AP caused by severe hypertriglycer

Self-administration of gender-affirming hormones: a systematic review of effectiveness, cost, and values and preferences of end-users and health workers.

Self-administration of quality gender-affirming hormones is one approach to expanding access to hormone therapy for individuals seeking secondary sex characteristics more aligned with their gender identity or expression and can be empowering when provided within safe, supportive health systems. To inform World Health Organization guidelines on self-care interventions, we systematically reviewed the evidence for self-administration compared to health worker-administration of gender-affirming hormones. We conducted a comprehensive search for peer-reviewed articles and conference abstracts that a

Voice-related Experiences of Nonbinary Individuals (VENI) Development and Content Validity.

Transgender individuals may seek a variety of gender-affirming health and educational services, including voice modification from speech-language pathologists. Measuring the client's self-perception of their communication experiences is crucial for providing client-centered services and measuring outcomes. However, there is currently no validated assessment tool for the nonbinary population, a part of the transgender population. This study explores the voice-related concerns and experiences among the nonbinary population to create a valid measure of their self-perception of voice. Ten nonbinar

Depression as a Function of Social Support in Transgender and Cisgender Individuals with Sexually Transmitted Diseases.

This study focused on the relationships among social support, self-esteem, and depression in transgender and cisgender individuals suffering from an incurable or curable sexually transmitted disease. Data were collected from 210 participants with an STI using a semi-structured interview along with culturally adapted standardized instruments. Results indicated no differences between transgender and cisgender groups in depression, although there were large differences in social support and self-esteem. Preliminary regression analysis identified only STI type and duration of STI as significant pr

From self-management to depathologisation: the evolution of transgender health care and rights in Spain between 1970 and 2020.

Even though transgender people continue to experience violence and discrimination in many aspects of life, there has been progressive recognition of their experiences and demands in recent decades. This article analyses the process of claiming civil rights and the evolution of health care for transgender people in Spain, from the mid-1970s to the present day, paying particular attention to the narratives of key actors involved. To this end, three socio-historical periods are identified: (1) the travesti period (the mid-1970s to the early 1990s), characterised by strong social and institutional

"Having a non-normative body for me is about survival": Androgynous body ideal among trans and nonbinary individuals.

The present study focused on trans and nonbinary (TNB) individuals who have an androgynous or non-stereotypical body ideal, with attention to how their body ideal is conceptualized and maintained. Data were collected online from 76 TNB individuals. Based on responses to two open-ended prompts, a two-tiered analysis was conducted. First, thematic analysis was used to develop four central themes describing the way TNB individuals conceptualized their androgynous body ideal: 1) Attaining Neutrality and De-Categorizing Gender; 2) Disaggregating Gender Expression; 3) Managing Gender Dysphoria; and

Implementation of transgender and gender diverse curriculum in medical imaging programs: A review of the literature.

INTRODUCTION: Sexual and gender minority patients experience significant inequities when accessing health care. Transgender and non-binary patients are at an even greater risk of experiencing health disparities due to their specialized health care needs. In the discipline of medical imaging, limited cultural competence, social stigma, and cis-heteronormative environments are barriers for these patients. There is an urgent need to improve medical imaging care for transgender and non-binary people; inclusion of sexual and gender minority content in medical imaging curriculum is one strategy to b

"Postulating Penis: What Influences the Interest of Transmasculine Patients in Gender Affirming Penile Reconstruction Techniques?".

BACKGROUND: The limitations of metoidioplasty and phalloplasty have been reported as deterrents for transgender and other gender expansive individuals (T/GE) desiring gender affirming surgery, and thus penile transplantation, epithesis, and composite tissue engineering (CTE) are being explored as alternative interventions. AIM: We aim to understand the acceptability of novel techniques and factors that may influence patient preferences in surgery to best treat this diverse population. METHODS: Descriptions of metoidioplasty, phalloplasty, epithesis, CTE, and penile transplant were delivered
