Do health behaviors mediate associations between personality traits and diabetes incidence?

PURPOSE: Personality traits have been reported to be associated with type 2 diabetes (T2DM) risk. The objective of this study was to examine whether and to what extent the associations between personality traits (dispositional optimism, hostility, and negative emotional expressiveness) and risk of T2DM were mediated by health behaviors and obesity. METHODS: Postmenopausal women (n = 110,992) aged 50-79 years without diabetes at enrollment in the Women's Health Initiative study (1993-1998) were followed up to 25 years. Incident diabetes was assessed via a validated self-report of physician-dia

Impulsivity assessed ten years earlier and sociodemographic factors predict adherence to COVID-19 related behavioral restrictions in old individuals with hypertension.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic has had clear and dramatic repercussions on health, the economy, and psychosocial well-being. Behavioral measures, such as wearing facemasks and maintaining distance from others, have proven crucial in fighting the contagion's spread. This study aimed to investigate Type A personality traits and sociodemographic predictors of adherence to governmental measures in a sample of frail individuals. METHODS: A sample of 105 Italians over age 60 (Mean age = 70 years; 60.6% male) affected by hypertension who participated in a previous longitudinal study were assessed…

Childhood maltreatment and personality disorders in the USA: specificity of effects and the impact of gender.

Childhood maltreatment increases the risk for adult personality disorders (PDs), but several PDs or maltreatment types co-occur. Specificity of maltreatment-personality associations is poorly understood. Using a representative US population sample, we identified specific associations between maltreatment types (sexual, physical and emotional abuse and physical and emotional neglect) and PDs after controlling for basic demographics, parental psychopathology, co-occurring maltreatment types and comorbid PD. We then examined interactions of gender and maltreatment in predicting PDs. Each maltreat

Clinical guidelines for psychotherapy for patients with borderline personality disorder.

In planning a course of psychotherapy for borderline patients, clinicians must take into account the heterogeneity of the clinical presentation in the borderline domain. Borderline personality disorder is usually accompanied, for example, by one or several "symptom disorders," such as an eating disorder, depression, posttraumatic stress disorder, premenstrual tension, dissociative disorder, or anxiety disorder--not to mention one or more other personality disorders. The nature of the "comorbidity" in each patient will determine which medications, if any, are applicable. The accompanying person

Exploring relationships for visceral and somatic pain with autonomic control and personality.

The autonomic nervous system (ANS) integrates afferent and motor activity for homeostatic processes including pain. The aim of the study was to compare hitherto poorly characterised relations between brainstem autonomic control and personality in response to visceral and somatic pain. Eighteen healthy subjects (16 females, mean age 34) had recordings during rest and pain of heart rate (HR), cardiac vagal tone (CVT), cardiac sensitivity to baroreflex (CSB), skin conductance level (SC), cardiac sympathetic index (CSI) and mean blood pressure (MBP). Visceral pain was induced by balloon distension

Sociotropy, Autonomy and Emotional Symptoms in Patients with Major Depression or Generalized Anxiety: The Mediating Role of Rumination and Immature Defenses.

The relationships between dimensions of personality (sociotropy and autonomy), coping strategies (rumination: brooding and reflection subtypes, and immature defenses) and symptoms of depression and anxiety were explored in patients with Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) and Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD). A total of 279 patients completed questionnaires including measures of personality dimensions, rumination, immature defenses, depression and anxiety. Our findings suggested that sociotropy and autonomy may be associated with both depressive and anxious symptoms in patients with MDD and with

Self-selection biases in psychological studies: Personality and affective disorders are prevalent among participants.

Respondents select the type of psychological studies that they want to participate in consistence with their needs and individual characteristics, which creates an unintentional self-selection bias. The question remains whether participants attracted by psychological studies may have more psychological dysfunctions related to personality and affective disorders compared to the general population. We investigated (N = 947; 62% women) whether the type of the invitation (to talk about recent critical or regular life events) or the source of the data (either face-to-face or online) attracts people

Changes in patient measures as predictors of therapists' ratings of treatment collaboration and change in eating disorder subgroups.

This study examined how implicit and explicit changes following integrative inpatient treatment of adolescents with eating disorder (ED) may predict the posttreatment ratings of psychodynamic therapists of their patients' openness to therapeutic processes and their change (Therapist Evaluation Inventory). The relative contribution of inpatients' ego functions was compared with that of their mental distress and ED symptoms in two subgroups: restricting type anorexia (AN-R) and binging/purging type EDs (B/P). Data indicated that the implicit personality variable of elevated ability to modulate a

Borderline personality disorder and parenting capacity: Understanding child protection population characteristics.

OBJECTIVE: This paper describes an audit of borderline symptoms, risk factors for maltreatment and types of abuse among parents who completed a parenting capacity assessment at a South Australian health-based child protection service. METHOD: A retrospective case note audit within a 28-month period was conducted and included parents (n = 107) who had completed a Mclean's screening instrument for borderline personality disorder and/or had a psychiatric review with a formal diagnosis. Parents who had a borderline personality disorder diagnosis or endorsed five or more symptoms were categorised

Relationships of plasma tryptophan availability to course of illness and clinical features of alcoholism: a preliminary study.

RATIONALE: Serotonergic (5-HT) mechanisms may be involved in impulse control (including antisocial behavior) across psychiatric syndromes. Age of onset may differentiate alcoholics on psychopathological characteristics associated with impulse control, especially mood disturbance, hostility, and a broad range of antisocial behaviors. Thus, there may be a predictable relationship between markers of 5-HT function and age of onset-related characteristics. OBJECTIVE: We tested the hypothesis that there would be a predictable relationship between the ratio of plasma tryptophan to large neutral amin

The first seventy admissions to an adolescent unit in Edinburgh: general characteristics and treatment outcome.

1. The clinical functioning of the Young People's Unit, Edinburgh is described. This involves a relatively permissive, democratic "milieu". Psychotherapeutic efforts are devoted to the resolution of family psychopathology and the achievement of maturational progress for the adolescent. 2. Data on the first seventy admittions to the Unit were examined. Two-thirds of the patients were diagnosed "developmental crisis"; the majority of these also had a personality disorder. 3. Assessments of family functioning showed high levels of disturbance and psychiatric morbidity among the parents. The adole

Personality, coronary-prone behaviour and adrenergic factors in essential hypertension: possible implications for cardiac prevention.

An association between high blood pressure and the coronary-prone (or type A) behaviour pattern, established as risk factors for myocardial infarction and sudden death, has been postulated on the basis of similar psychophysiological mechanisms involving the sympathetic nervous system. Psychodynamic personality profiles and type A behaviour assessment have therefore been related to biochemical markers of sympathetic overactivity, but type A behaviour scores were generally found to be low in hypertensive subjects - and lowest in those with high plasma noradrenaline. However, projective assessmen

CSF testosterone: relationship to aggression, impulsivity, and venturesomeness in adult males with personality disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Studies of various species suggest that testosterone, assayed in various compartments, is correlated with aggression and possibly related behaviors. The objective of this study was to assess the relationship between cerebrospinal fluid testosterone (CSF TEST) and measures of aggression, impulsivity, and venturesomeness in male personality disordered subjects and test the hypothesis that CSF TEST would correlate directly with each measure in this group. METHODS: Lumbar CSF for morning basal levels of testosterone were obtained from 31 male subjects with personality disorder. Aggress

An exploratory structural equation modeling representation of the Level of Personality Functioning Scale-Brief Form 2.0 in Iranian samples: Association with attachment, mentalizing, and personality pathology.

The Level of Personality Functioning Scale-Brief Form 2.0 (LPFS-BF 2.0) is a brief measure for personality functioning based on the Alternative Model for Personality Disorders. Despite a strong emerging research base in support of the measure, most studies have been conducted in North America or Europe, and few studies have explored its association with theoretically relevant correlates such as mentalizing and attachment. The current study examined its factor structure, reliability, measurement invariance, and validity in Iranian samples using Exploratory Structural Equation Modeling. Two Iran

Scrutinizing the relationship between shyness and social phobia.

The nature of the relationship between shyness and social phobia can be clarified by assessing rates of social phobia in highly shy and normative samples. In the present study, 2202 participants were screened and categorized on a shyness scale as highly shy (90th percentile) or "normatively" shy (40-60th percentile). The Composite International Diagnostic Interview and the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV Axis II Personality Disorders (SCID-II; Avoidant Personality Disorder module) were used to assign clinical diagnoses. Approximately 49% of individuals in the highly shy group had a so

Psychological correlates of functional dysphonia: an investigation using the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory.

Abnormal psychological factors have been implicated in the development of functional dysphonia (FD). This investigation describes the personality and psychological characteristics of 25 female subjects who had received the diagnosis of FD. In all subjects symptoms were resolved after voice therapy. While vocally asymptomatic, these remitted subjects with FD completed the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI), an objective personality questionnaire. When compared with a medical outpatient control group, the results showed that subjects with FD scored significantly higher on 7 of 10

Irregular discharges from a dual diagnosis unit.

Irregular discharges, previously studied on psychiatric or substance abuse treatment units, are a particular problem for dual diagnosis units. We examined demographic and clinical variables for their association with irregular discharge from an acute dual diagnosis inpatient unit, retrospectively reviewing 316 consecutive admissions. One hundred and nineteen patients (37.7%) were irregularly discharged (61 AMA, 31 administrative, 27 elopements), staying an average of 18.8 days compared with 51.4 days for those regularly discharged (p < .001). Younger age (p = .007) and discharge diagnosis of a
