Sonography has provided an important addition to the tools available for the diagnosis of the soft tissues in the head and neck region. The ENT surgeon himself is able to examine pathological formations by this quick, non-invasive and, last but not least, less expensive method. Due to the high resolution of the procedure the chance of detecting even small changes is increased and the exactness of diagnosis of pathological lymph nodes of the neck has been significantly improved compared to palpation alone. Two cases of obstructive hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, in which the transthoracic echocardiography was not enough to reach the right diagnosis, are reported. The transesophageal echocardiography revealed to be the most useful technique to reach the exact diagnosis and more information about the mechanism of the left ventricular outflow tract obstruction. Moreover, this technique could be useful to direct to a surgical treatment and to monitorize the mitral valve function and the possible complications during operation.

The Common Carotid artery Intima-Media Thickness (CCIMT) can reflect systemic atherosclerosis in renal patients on hemodialysis. This study aimed to compare CCIMT measured by color Doppler ultrasonography between two groups including dialytic patients and normal subjects. In this case-control setting, 48 patients with Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) on hemodialysis (case group) and 46 age and sex-matched healthy subjects (control group) were enrolled in this study. Color Doppler ultrasound was used to measure CCIMT and determine presence of atherosclerotic plaques in carotid bulb in both groups.

UNLABELLED: Giant cell arteritis (GCA) is a type of large and middle arteries vasculitis that occurs in patients aged over 50 years. The typical symptoms include pain and tenderness in the temporal region, sudden vision impairment or loss and jaw claudication. If left untreated the disease may lead to permanent blindness. The diagnosis is based on the ACR criteria and the treatment of choice are glicocorticosteroids. The ultrasonography with color Doppler is characterized by high sensitivity and specificity which makes it a valuable diagnostic tool, especially in questionable cases.
