Understanding barriers to influenza vaccination among parents is important to improve vaccine uptake among children.

The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly altered public perceptions of vaccines, particularly among parents. In high-income countries like the United Kingdom (UK) and Australia, factors such as misinformation, the expedited approval process of COVID-19 vaccines and unique local challenges have contributed to vaccine hesitancy, resulting in uneven uptake across various vaccination programs. Despite efforts like school-based influenza vaccination programs in the UK and free influenza vaccines in Australia, vaccination rates continue to decline. This is especially concerning given the concurrent c

Immunization coverage among asplenic patients and strategies to increase vaccination compliance: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Asplenic or splenectomized patients have a higher risk (ranging from 10 to 50-fold) than the general population of developing an overwhelming post-splenectomy infection (OPSI). Thus, they should receive specific vaccinations to prevent bacterial infections and influenza. The aim of this meta-analysis was to estimate vaccination coverage (VC) with the recommended vaccines among splenectomized patients; strategies recommended in those studies to improve VC worldwide are considered as well. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Scopus, MEDLINE/PubMed, Google Scholar and ISI Web of Knowledge d

Understanding hesitancy and decision postponement toward digital therapeutics for Insomnia: Roles of objective ambivalence and digital health literacy.

BACKGROUND: Digital therapeutics (DTx) are evidence-based software interventions that require clinical validation and regulatory approval and, in many cases, are initiated through physician prescription. Despite demonstrated efficacy, their real-world uptake remains limited. OBJECTIVE: This study conceptualized hesitancy toward DTx as a state of indecision and uncertainty, distinct from intention and categorical refusal, often manifesting as decision deferral. Building on vaccine hesitancy and attitudinal ambivalence research, we examined whether objective ambivalence (the coexistence of stro

The value of public-private collaborative real-world evidence platforms to monitor vaccine performance post authorization: DRIVE - a European initiative.

INTRODUCTION: Fighting pandemics requires an established infrastructure for pandemic preparedness, with existing, sustainable platforms ready to be activated. This includes platforms for disease surveillance, virus circulation, and vaccine performance monitoring based on Real-World data, to complement clinical trial evidence. AREAS COVERED: Because of its complexity, this can best be done by combining efforts between public and private sectors, developing a multi-stakeholder approach. Public-Private-Partnerships increasingly play a critical role in combating infectious diseases but are still

Evaluation of Adverse Reactions to Vaccines.

The development and widespread use of vaccination over the past centuries has been the single most impactful intervention in public health, by effectively preventing morbidity and mortality from infectious diseases. Vaccination is generally well tolerated in the vast majority of the population, and the benefits of vaccination largely outweigh the risk of severe adverse events in the majority of patients. Vaccine hesitancy can be a significant concern and lead to infectious disease outbreaks. All health care providers play an important role in maintaining public confidence in vaccines because t

Impact assessment of an educational course on vaccinations in a population of medical students.

BACKGROUND: The inadequate knowledge about vaccinations of healthcare workers, including medical doctors, has certainly contributed to the spread of the vaccine hesitancy. Therefore, it is essential to improve the level of knowledge of future doctors. The aim of the study is to evaluate the impact of a course about vaccinations on the knowledge of medical students. METHODS: Medical students were asked to complete an anonymous questionnaire before and after a seminar on vaccination that they willingly attended. The two questionnaires contained the same 10 questions about vaccines. Only the stu

Barriers and facilitators related to COVID-19 vaccine acceptance and uptake among people living with HIV.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review reports on the myriad barriers and facilitators related to COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy and factors contribution to uptake among people living with HIV (PLWH) globally published over the past year (2021-2022). RECENT FINDINGS: Across the literature, participants indicated concerns about the safety, efficacy and overall rapid development of the COVID-19 vaccine as a reason for delaying or not being vaccinated. Medical mistrust and perceptions about the risk of COVID-19 immune response and severity also played a role in COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy among PLWH. Almost

[Rotavirus vaccination in Europe in 2010].

The important burden of rotavirus infections in infants largely justifies vaccine prevention. Two attenuated oral vaccines were licensed in Europe in 2006 and have proven effective against severe rotavirus gastroenteritis in infants, yet few countries have implemented vaccination. This hesitation may be related to a very low risk of intussusception in vaccinees, but is mainly due to national differences in cost-effectiveness.

Motivators and barriers to COVID-19 vaccine acceptance in Russia.

Vaccine hesitancy is one of the major roadblocks to ending the COVID-19 pandemic. However, little is known about individuals' motivators and barriers to vaccination in Russia. We aimed to determine which factors were associated with COVID-19 vaccine acceptance in Russia. We conducted a cross-sectional, online survey across Russia at the end of 2021, during a time with increasing new cases of COVID-19. We used the Health Belief Model to test which of the constructs were associated with vaccine acceptance and controlled for demographic variables in the multivariate logistic regression analysis a

Willingness, beliefs, and barriers regarding the COVID-19 vaccine in Saudi Arabia: a multiregional cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has spread worldwide, and the vaccine remains the ultimate cornerstone to overcoming its long-term impact. Vaccine hesitancy might obstruct the effort to achieve herd immunity and eradicate the virus. We assessed Saudi Arabian individuals' willingness, beliefs, and barriers regarding the COVID-19 vaccine and their adherence to preventive measures during and after the pandemic. METHODS: A self-administered electronic validated questionnaire was distributed among the five major regions in Saudi Arabia between November and December 2020. The qu

Healthcare workers' vaccination at European and Italian level: a narrative review.

Today some vaccine-preventable diseases remain an important cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide despite the availability of new vaccines. Healthcare workers are particularly at risk to acquire an infection disease, playing a fundamental role in nosocomial transmission, which makes them an important target group for vaccination. The vaccination recommendations of HCWs, as well as the general population, differ from country to country. Furthermore, coverage rates vary widely a lot over the world, making HCWs vulnerable to disease and so healthcare settings to outbreaks.  The motivations o

Maintaining the value of influenza vaccination - the shift from quadrivalent to trivalent vaccines: an expert review.

INTRODUCTION: This review provides an expert perspective on the sustained value of seasonal influenza vaccines as they transition from quadrivalent to trivalent formulations, based on apparent elimination of the B/Yamagata strain from circulation and subsequent advice from the World Health Organization (WHO) to remove the B/Yamagata antigen from influenza vaccines. Influenza has a high clinical and economic burden globally. However, coronavirus disease 2019 has created new challenges for managing seasonal influenza by amplifying vaccine hesitancy. Understanding why influenza virus circulation

Spread of COVID-19 Vaccine Misinformation in the Ninth Inning: Retrospective Observational Infodemic Study.

BACKGROUND: Shortly after Pfizer and Moderna received emergency use authorizations from the Food and Drug Administration, there were increased reports of COVID-19 vaccine-related deaths in the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS). In January 2021, Major League Baseball legend and Hall of Famer, Hank Aaron, passed away at the age of 86 years from natural causes, just 2 weeks after he received the COVID-19 vaccine. Antivaccination groups attempted to link his death to the Moderna vaccine, similar to other attempts misrepresenting data from the VAERS to spread COVID-19 misinformation.
