Phytotoxicity of pyroxasulfone and pendimethalin, individually and in combination, in non-target vegetable crops.

Herbicides are increasingly used in modern agriculture, yet their unintended effects on adjacent non-target vegetable crops remain insufficiently investigated. This study evaluated the individual and combined phytotoxic effects of two pre-emergence herbicides, pyroxasulfone and pendimethalin, on nine non-target vegetable crops during early seedling development, integrating dose-response modeling (GR50), toxicity index (TI) assessment and onion root-tip cytological analysis. All treatments produced significant dose-dependent suppression of seedling growth, with dry weight emerging as the most s

Increasing Extreme Negative Vegetation Responses to Drought-Related Compound Events.

Vegetation growth is increasingly threatened by both extreme climate events and anthropogenic disturbances. Although considerable attention has been given to detecting large-scale vegetation anomalies, comprehensive analyses of the spatiotemporal dynamics of negative extreme anomalies in vegetation growth (NEGs) and their underlying drivers remain limited. Here, we treat NEGs as event-scale vegetation declines from onset to termination, enabling coherent tracking of vegetation decline events and their associated drivers. Applied to global leaf area index (LAI) data from 2001 to 2024, we find i

Grow against the flow: The impact of off-season vegetable production in Cambodia.

Vegetable production is strongly seasonal, creating income volatility for smallholder farmers and occasionally high prices for consumers. The ability to produce vegetables outside their regular growing season can enhance farmers' incomes and income stability, yet empirical evidence remains limited. This study evaluates the impact of training farmers in Cambodia on off-season production technologies for yardlong beans, tomatoes, and brassicas during the hot-dry and wet seasons. Using survey data collected from 172 intervention and 179 control farmers two and three years after the training began…

Vegetation responses to air dryness amplify future land surface warming.

Temperature exerts a first-order control on vegetation photosynthesis and transpiration. Yet most studies investigating temperature impacts on plants rely on near-surface air temperature, rather than canopy temperature-the temperature plants actually experience. Because canopy temperature directly regulates ecosystem function, it provides a more accurate measure of vegetation-climate interactions. Combining Earth System Model (ESM) simulations and satellite observations in a dual emergent constraint, here we show that canopy temperature is projected to increase substantially more than air temp

Increased spread of global flash droughts threatens vegetation productivity resilience.

Flash drought (faster-developing drought) has been pervasively intensified, posing detrimental constraints on vegetation productivity. However, the potential expansion of flash droughts from flash drought hotspots to non-hotspots and its associated risks to vegetation productivity remain unknown. Furthermore, the divergence in the underlying drivers governing vegetation productivity responses to flash and slow droughts (slower-developing droughts) is unclear. We quantify the dominant drivers underlying vegetation productivity resilience (the departure of productivity anomalies after drought ef

Past rapid spread of introduced livestock coincided with vegetation clearance on Madagascar.

Debates persist around the past and present effects of introduced livestock on the native biodiversity of Madagascar. Indeed, the variable habitat and past rate of spread of livestock across the island's distinct ecoregions are poorly known. Sets of 14C and stable isotope data from bovid bone collagen give a direct approach to estimating past introduction events and animal diet. We sampled more than 100 bovid bones collected at 23 sites across the island and present a compiled dataset of stable carbon and nitrogen isotope data from 126 specimens (94 of which are directly 14C-dated) belonging t

Vegetated buffer strips for reducing diffused agricultural water pollution in Africa.

Agricultural pollution poses a significant global threat to biodiversity, water quality, and human health, with particularly acute to chronic toxic impacts on living beings in low- and middle-income countries. Vegetated buffer strips (VBSs) are recognized as a cost-effective, nature-based solution for managing agricultural pollution risks. Despite their proven efficacy, the adoption of VBSs remains very limited across African countries. This review provides comprehensive scientific literature to assess VBS effectiveness in mitigating diffuse agricultural water pollution, with a specific focus

Examining Demographic Variables Associated with Fruit and Vegetable Intake and Skin Yellowness.

Background/Objectives: Skin yellowness measured using reflectance spectroscopy can be used as a proxy for 'skin carotenoid' concentration and as a valid estimate of fruit and vegetable intake. However, the association between different ethnic backgrounds, age, sex and self-reported skin colour on skin yellowness is yet to be explored. Methods: This exploratory cross-sectional study used a convenience sample to assess the relationship between skin yellowness (b*), measured using skin reflectance spectroscopy, and fruit and vegetable intakes across different age groups, sex, self-reported Caucas

Vegetation on the chordae and papillary muscle of the mitral valve: a diagnostic and therapeutic enigma.

Vegetations on the high-pressure side of the mitral valve, particularly the chordae tendineae, are rare. We report two cases of infective endocarditis (IE) with atypical presentations. Case 1: A 34-year-old male with pulmonary aspergilloma, who presented with fever and respiratory distress. Blood cultures grew Staphylococcus species, and echocardiography revealed a 16 × 8 mm vegetation on the mitral valve chordae. Surgery was deferred due to disseminated fungal infection, and the patient improved with antimicrobial therapy. Case 2: A previously healthy 36-year-old male presented with fever, vo

Artificial intelligence in fruit and vegetable preservation: innovations and applications of intelligent technology.

Fruits and vegetables are highly susceptible to post-harvest quality deterioration, and traditional preservation technologies can hardly meet the modern industry's demands for precision management and green development. By deeply integrating with sensors, the Internet of Things (IoT) and big data technologies, artificial intelligence (AI) enables full-link refined management covering signal collection, intelligent analysis, scheme formulation and automatic regulation, and facilitates precise control under controlled postharvest experimental conditions. Although research on AI-assisted postharv…

Overcompensation of vegetation productivity after late-spring frost in the Northern Hemisphere.

Late-spring frost can disrupt plant growth, yet the extent to which vegetation recovers and compensates for frost-induced productivity loss remains poorly understood. Using eddy-covariance carbon flux data, satellite-derived gross primary productivity and solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence across the Northern Hemisphere, and multi-year frost manipulative experiments, we show that overcompensation, in which post-frost recovery exceeds loss, occurs in 21.5-41.0% of events, with annual productivity exceeding the non-frost baseline. Overcompensation is strongest at high latitudes, reflecting r

Perioperative Management of a Case of Trousseau Syndrome Accompanied by Aortic Valve Vegetation.

There is no established consensus on the appropriate perioperative management of patients with Trousseau syndrome. In particular, the selection of anticoagulants, including direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs), remains a critical point. Current guidelines recommend continuous administration of unfractionated or low-molecular-weight heparin but do not specify the efficacy of DOACs. We report a case of Trousseau syndrome and nonbacterial thrombotic endocarditis (NBTE) with recurrent embolism, focusing on perioperative management and anticoagulant selection. In the case we encountered, a previously

Vegetable oil-derived functional polymers in biomedical applications: hurdles and possibilities.

Over the past several years, renewable resource-based polymers have consistently attracted research attention from academia and industry as an alternative to petroleum-based polymers. Depletion of fuel reserves, the rising cost of petroleum products, and strict government regulations drive the search for alternative resources. Vegetable oils have been considered as one of the sustainable feedstocks considering their natural abundance, low cost, and ecological acceptance. Vegetable oils are used to generate various biobased functional polymers like polyester, polyamide, poly(ester amide)s, poly

Modeling the interaction of vegetation and sea level rise on barrier island evolution.

Barrier islands provide a first line of defense against ocean flooding and storm surge. Biogeomorphic interactions are recognized as important in coastal system processes, but current barrier island models are primarily dominated by physical processes. Recent research has demonstrated different biogeomorphic states that influence response to sea level rise and other disturbance. Building on this understanding, we present a cellular model utilizing biotic and abiotic processes and their interactions for barrier island evolution. Using the literature and field derived parameters, we model barrie

Inhibition and Mechanism of Citral on Bacillus cereus Vegetative Cells, Spores, and Biofilms.

Bacillus cereus causes food poisoning by producing toxins that cause diarrhea and vomiting and, in severe cases, endocarditis, meningitis, and other diseases. It also tends to form biofilms and spores that lead to contamination of the food production environment. Citral is a potent natural antibacterial agent, but its antibacterial activity against B. cereus has not been extensively studied. In this study, we first determined the minimum inhibitory concentrations and minimum bactericidal concentrations, growth curves, killing effect in different media, membrane potential, intracellular adenosi

A Case of Persistent Pasteurella multocida Cellulitis Complicated With Large Endocarditis Vegetation.

In the realm of infective endocarditis, a distinct and infrequent player emerges - Pasteurella multocida, an organism more commonly associated with zoonotic infections, now warranting careful consideration in this unique case report. P . multocida is a Gram-negative, facultative anaerobic cocco-bacillus and a common member of the oral bacterial flora of cats and dogs. In humans, it commonly causes skin and wound infections after bites and scratches. Disseminated P . multocida infection seeded into the heart valve is very rare and has only been reported in about one case per year worldwide with
