Right ventricular dyssynchrony and functional capacity before and after percutaneous balloon mitral valvuloplasty in patients with mitral stenosis: Determinants and clinical impact.

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to investigate the utility of right ventricular (RV) dyssynchrony to assess functional capacity utilizing 6-minute walking test distance (6MWTD) and to measure brain natriuretic peptide levels (BNP) in patients with mitral stenosis (MS) and to study its value to predict adverse outcome following percutaneous balloon mitral valvuloplasty (PBMV). METHODS: A total of 108 patients with moderate to severe MS (26.5 ± 7.5 years) were included in this study. All were candidates for PBMV. RV strain curves were obtained using two-dimensional speckle-tracking echocardiography, and st

Right ventricular evaluation to improve survival outcome in patients with severe functional mitral regurgitation and advanced heart failure undergoing MitraClip therapy.

BACKGROUND: Percutaneous mitral valve repair (PMVR) is a new option for high risk patients with functional mitral regurgitation (FMR) and severely depressed left ventricular (LV) function who are not responding to optimal medical therapy. However patients with end stage heart failure have a high mortality rate despite MitraClip implantation. We sought to identify right ventricular (RV) echocardiographic predictors of outcome in a large cohort of patients with severe FMR and advanced heart failure in order to select the most appropriate candidate who could benefit from this treatment. METHODS:

Association Between Location of Pulmonary Outflow Obstruction and Right Ventricular Size and Function After Repair of Tetralogy of Fallot, Pulmonary Atresia, and Major Aortopulmonary Collaterals.

Quantification of right ventricular (RV) size and function after tetralogy of Fallot repair is critical for determining timing of reintervention and outcomes. Tetralogy of Fallot patients with pulmonary atresia and major aortopulmonary collateral arteries (TOF/PA/MAPCAs) are a unique group in which the RV is subjected to various loading conditions, allowing for direct comparison. Retrospective evaluation of RV echocardiographic indices in repaired pediatric TOF/PA/MAPCAs patients (2/2002 - 4/2018). Patients were categorized as having conduit stenosis (peak gradient ≥ 2.5 m/s) and/or distal pul

Research on evaluation of fetal right ventricular function in normal and diabetic pregnant women during mid to late pregnancy using automated MPI ultrasound detection technology.

Objective: fetal circulatory characteristics differ from those after birth; the right ventricle assumes more than 60% of the workload in the systemic circulation before birth. The right ventricle automated myocardial performance index (AM+MPI) is a simple, time-efficient, and stable assessment method used to evaluate overall cardiac function. This study aimed to apply the right ventricle AM+MPI technique to explore its role in normal mid-to-late pregnancy fetal cardiac function and compare the AM+MPI differences between diabetic and normal fetuses. Methods: A total of 150 pregnant women who vi

Association of Male Sex With Worse Right Ventricular Function and Survival in Pulmonary Hypertension in the Redefining Pulmonary Hypertension Through Pulmonary Vascular Disease Phenomics Cohort.

BACKGROUND: Sex-based differences are important in the development and progression of pulmonary arterial hypertension. However, it is not established whether these differences are generalizable to all forms of pulmonary hypertension (PH). RESEARCH QUESTION: What are the sex-based differences in right ventricle (RV) function and transplant-free survival in patients with PH from the Redefining Pulmonary Hypertension Through Pulmonary Vascular Disease Phenomics (PVDOMICS) cohort? STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: Patients with PH enrolled in the PVDOMICS cohort study underwent right heart catheterizati

Comparison of cardiac function between left bundle branch pacing and right ventricular outflow tract septal pacing in the short-term: A registered controlled clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: The novel method of left bundle branch pacing (LBBP) has been reported to produce a narrower QRS duration and lower pacing threshold than right ventricular outflow tract septal pacing (RVOP). However, whether LBBP is superior to traditional RVOP in improving cardiac function still lacks sufficient evidence. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to compare the changes in cardiac function (especially in brain natriuretic peptide (BNP)levels, left atrial function, and left ventricular diastolic function) within 7 days between LBBP and RVOP. METHODS AND RESULTS: A single-centre pr

Evaluation of three-dimensional right ventricular function and reverse remodelling in patients undergoing percutaneous mitral valve repair for functional mitral regurgitation: insights from a multicentre Italian registry.

BACKGROUND: The predictive role of right ventricular dysfunction (RVD) in patients with functional mitral regurgitation (FMR) undergoing transcatheter edge-to-edge repair (TEER), as well as RV remodelling following the procedure, remains uncertain. We evaluated the prognostic impact of pre-procedural three-dimensional (3D) right ventricular ejection fraction (RVEF) in patients with FMR. Additionally, we assessed the RV reverse remodelling (RVRR) based on 3D volumes and ejection fraction six months after the procedure. METHODS: Data from 74 patients treated with TEER for FMR were prospectively

Abnormal flow conduction through pulmonary arteries is associated with right ventricular volume and function in patients with repaired tetralogy of Fallot: does flow quality affect afterload?

OBJECTIVES: Flow through the proximal pulmonary arteries (PAs) of patients with repaired Tetralogy of Fallot (TOF) is known to be highly disordered and associated with significant regurgitation. The purpose of this study was to evaluate 4D-Flow MRI-derived viscous energy loss [Formula: see text])-as a result of non-efficient flow propagation, and relate this parameter to standard right ventricular (RV) size and function markers in patients with repaired TOF. METHODS: Thirty-five patients with TOF and 14 controls underwent comprehensive 4D-Flow MRI evaluation for qualitative flow analysis and

Echocardiographic assessment of right ventricular function in routine practice: Which parameters are useful to predict one-year outcome in advanced heart failure patients with dilated cardiomyopathy?

BACKGROUND: Right ventricular (RV) function has recently gained attention as a prognostic predictor of outcome even in patients who have left-sided heart failure. Since several conventional echocardiographic parameters of RV systolic function have been proposed, our aim was to determine if any of these parameters (tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion: TAPSE, tissue Doppler derived systolic tricuspid annular motion velocity: S', fractional area change: FAC) are associated with outcome in advanced heart failure patients with dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM). METHODS: We retrospectively enroll

Characteristics of Right Ventricular to Pulmonary Arterial Coupling and Association With Functional Status Among Older Aged Adults from the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis.

Although the echocardiographic:derived ratio of tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion (TAPSE) to pulmonary arterial systolic pressure (PASP) is an important prognostic tool in heart failure (HF), the relation with 6-minute walk distance (6MWD) and N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) is less established. We sought to establish the normative values of TAPSE:PASP among older adults without cardiovascular disease (CVD) and evaluate the relation with NT-proBNP and 6MWD. Among 1,542 participants of the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis-HF ancillary study, the cross-section

The impact of paced QRS duration on the expression of genes related to contractile function of the left ventricle in chronically paced patients from the right ventricular apex.

BACKGROUND: Right ventricular (RV) apex has proven to induce abnormal left ventricular (LV) activation pattern leading to pacing-induced cardiomyopathy (PICM) in a substantial percentage of paced patients. This study assessed the impact of paced QRS duration on the expression in the peripheral blood of sarcoplasmic reticulum calcium ATPase (SERCA) and investigated whether its width is related to the extend of LV remodelling. METHODS: We enrolled 52 consecutive patients with preserved ejection fraction (EF) who underwent pacemaker implantation for bradycardic indications. Group A consisted of
