Effects of 42 hr of total sleep deprivation on component processes of verbal working memory.

The current investigation examined changes in working memory (WM) component processes following total sleep deprivation (TSD) in a sample of healthy young persons. Forty subjects were administered a verbal form of a continuous recognition test (CRT) before and after 42 hr of TSD. Parameters of a computational model of the CRT reflecting attention, WM span, and rate of episodic memory encoding were estimated for each individual. Subjects made more errors on the test following sleep deprivation. Analysis of model parameters revealed statistically independent declines in both the attention and WM

[Developmental dyslexia: the role of phonological processing for the development of literacy].

Successful early reading and spelling acquisition depends on a number of different skills. Of considerable importance is phonological processing, which is the processing of acoustic signals with linguistic content. Three areas of phonological processing have been found to be most important for reading and writing competence: phonological awareness, naming speed, and phonological working memory. Research on these components suggests that specific interventions tailored to individual phonological processing deficits may prevent later dyslexia. Therefore, it appears mandatory that ear-nose-throat

Alternative organization of speech perception deficits in children.

Children's first-language perception base takes shape gradually from birth onwards. Empirical research has confirmed that children may continue to fall short of age-based expectations in their speech perception. The purpose of this study was to assess the contribution of various perception processes in both reading and learning disabled children. A series of experiments was carried out with 450 Hungarian-speaking schoolchildren: learning disabled, reading disabled and typically developing control first-, second-, and third-graders. Data from seven perception tasks - focusing on acoustic, phone

Do Chinese dyslexic children have difficulties learning English as a second language?

The aim of the present study was to examine whether Chinese dyslexic children had difficulties learning English as a second language given the distinctive characteristics of the two scripts. Twenty-five Chinese primary school children with developmental dyslexia and 25 normally achieving children were tested on a number of English vocabulary, reading, and phonological processing tasks. It was found that the Dyslexia group performed significantly worse than the Control group in nearly all the English measures. The findings suggest that Chinese dyslexic children also encounter difficulties in le

[The changes in the distinctness and discrimination of phonems of cochlear implants children].

Hearing impaired children do not develop oral speech in the same time with the hearing ones. Cochlear implants may change this situation. Implanted deaf children may develop oral speech but only after long speech rehabilitation. Acquisition of language skills should be assesed correctly in every patient. It is important because this therapy is quite expensive. There are many quantitative and qualitative methods used all over the world. In some cases score is calculated as percentage of correctly repeated words. Sometimes it did not reflect true level of language development. 240 people were im

Barber-Say Syndrome: report of a new case.

We present a girl with lax, redundant skin, ectropion, bulbous nose, macrostomia, and absence of mammary glands. To our knowledge, she represents the fourth described case of Barber-Say Syndrome (BSS). BSS and ablepharon macrostomia syndrome (AMS) share common and distinctive clinical manifestations that involve the same structure of the skin and adnexa. We hypothesize that they may derive from a defective regulation of the same gene.

Time of pubertal onset, testosterone levels and intelligence in 47,XXY males.

This study examined the relations between verbal and performance IQs, time of pubertal onset and testosterone levels from 13 to 16 years of age in a sample of 30 males with a supernumerary X chromosome. The findings indicated that verbal IQs measured prior to puberty, during puberty and at mid-adolescence were strongly related to relatively early pubertal onset and testosterone levels. Performance IQs had little or no relationship with the same variables. The results are discussed in terms of several different psychobiological models.

Effects of imitation on language comprehension and transfer to production in children with mental retardation.

This study investigated the effects of verbal imitation on the comprehension of novel object-location responses and subsequent transfer of these responses to production. A matrix training procedure was used to teach 2 children with moderate mental retardation syntactic rules for combining known and unknown words into two-word utterances. An alternating treatments design was used with two conditions: receptive teaching with imitation of the target phrase and no imitation of the phrase. Findings suggested that the use of imitation facilitated both generalized receptive learning and transfer to p

Anterograde amnesia with oral lorazepam.

Twelve healthy volunteers were enrolled in a double-blind placebo-controlled study to evaluate the amnestic effects of orally administered lorazepam. The subjects were tested for immediate and delayed recall, using a word recall memory task. The subjects taking lorazepam did not differ from subjects receiving placebo on immediate recall. However, the delayed recall scores of lorazepam subjects were significantly lower compared to the placebo group (p less than .01).

Immediate free recall in early childhood autism: another point of behavioural similarity with the amnesic syndrome.

Autistic children were compared with age and ability matched controls on a test of immediate recall of word lists. Overall performance in the two groups was very similar. However, the overall recall scores were achieved differently by the two groups, the autistic subjects recalled significantly fewer earlier presented items and more later presented items than did controls. This finding is discussed in relation to the memory disabilities of adults suffering from the amnesic syndrome.

Peripheral endocannabinoid concentrations are not associated with verbal memory impairment during MDMA intoxication.

BACKGROUND: Preclinical data have suggested involvement of the endocannabinoid (eCB) system in MDMA-induced memory impairment. Clinical research has shown that blockade of the 5-HT2 receptor nulls memory impairment during MDMA intoxication. Interestingly, studies have demonstrated that the eCB and the 5-HT system interact. It was hypothesized that MDMA would cause an increase in eCB concentrations together with a decrease in memory performance, and that combining MDMA with a 5-HT2 receptor blocker ketanserin would lead to a counteraction of the MDMA effects on eCB concentrations and memory. Differences in BTBR T+ tf/J and C57BL/6J mice on probabilistic reversal learning and stereotyped behaviors.

Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) represent a class of neurodevelopmental disorders characterized by impairments in social interaction, verbal and non-verbal communication, as well as restricted interests and repetitive behavior. This latter class of symptoms often includes features such as compulsive behaviors and resistance to change. The BTBR T+ tf/J mouse strain has been used as an animal model to investigate the social communication and restricted interest features in ASD. Less is known about whether this mouse strain models cognitive flexibility deficits also observed in ASD. The present e
